How Alysheba is under a 9 lowers the credibility of this site and the lack of knowledge of it's readers and "fans" if you can call them that.
oops got cutoff ... his 1987 BCC whisker loss to Ferdinand. The one great thing about Alysheba is when he lost he just didn't fire or had maybe a breathing issue. If he was in it he never lost. You wouldn't see him with "heads turned for home" and have the lead or be on it and give it up. To me that says a lot ... heart, attitude and competitive nature. Looking back on a couple of his losses, he was coming relentlessly and it was a very wide trip or poor racing luck that he couldn't catch up. For me as a 4 year old he accomplished things we may never, ever see again in racing. That, as a fan is very sad and is the number one reason Horse Racing is in such a bad way today.
It is very difficult for me to compare horses that ran pre-Seabiscuit. From then until Secretaiat ran his Belmont stunner the benchmark was placed. So since my fan attendance began in the late 1970's I can invoke an opinion over the last 35 years that is not color coated or varnished by bias. With that being said there is a case for several horses as a 3 year old. Alysheba had a very good 2 and 3 year old campaign ending in arguebly
@airdale2008 ... and all others. It is laughable when you look at Alysheba's career, the very difficult field of horses he ran against in several different states from east to west, not to mention he had a bleeding issue and had to find away to run without lasix. Today Alysheba is still the only horse ever to win America's 3 biggest and most important races. The Kentucky Derby, the Santa Anita Handicap and the Breeders Cup Classic. The Bid' had far inferior competition. Personally it is the fact that Alysheba had that "human"aspect that he'd have a bad day now and then, but then bounce back and win over and over again across the USA racing in the toughest Grade 1 events. Alysheba was and always will be America's horse. Top 10 of all time.
A great horse, but his competition in 1980 was far weaker than the 1988 campaign of Alysheba's. The Bid was very "hyped" by the media, and well deserved. But he NEVER beat a great horse. Flying Paster was very good and that was the best horse he ever beat.
Name the Bid's accomplishments as a 4 year old. There is a saying in sports and athletes. Champions can get beat, but they don't stay beat. Saw the Bid and he was no Alysheba. That comparison is laughable. as far as Dr. Fager, show me how his 4 year old campaign was better. The facts. Alysheba's 1988 was Horse Racing best ever non 2 or 3 year old campaign. Would be glad to debate the facts ... not opinion.
HRN ... Ranking Alysheba number 288 on your All Time list is so ignorant how can this site have any credibility?
6 Grade 1 Victories alone in 1988. Back to back track records. One where he carried 15 lbs more than the previous record holder.
Based on this grading system, Alysheba's 1988 season was the greatest ever in Horse Racing History for a 4 Year Old Colt. No horse ever did what he did. 4 races under 159.4 in a mile and a quarter at 4 different tracks. Second to none.
6, count them 6, Grade 1 victories in 1988. 4 times ran sub 2:00 mile and a quarter race on 4 different tracks. The Best 4 year old colt in racing history. Top 10 Horse of all time. I dare anyone to compare his 1988 season to any horse that ever lived.
