Paladin, look at the overall performance instead of the win. He needs a bit more experience, but he'll be one to contend with in no time.

This one really came into its own the last two contests. IF there is real quality here then this might be a very very good one down the line

I like him, so far, I just would like for him to win a grade 1 and be consistently at the top through his entire 4 year old campaign, next year, then talk about greatness.

An interesting side note, if you look at many of Tesio's famous horses, it is Lydia Tesio who is listed as the breeder. Many have speculated that she was really the brains that paired the sires and dams. Unless someone from that era comes forward with definitive proof we will never know. I do remember Cruguet saying that about Hoist the Flag. It was devastating when he was injured because so many were certain he would be the next TC winner. Ribot certainly did leave his mark in the breeding shed. A brilliant worldwide influence. As far as your thirst for turf racing, all you had to do is watch Zarkava and you couldn't help but be hooked ; )

Poor old Hoist the Flag: broken limb on Derby's eave later came back to cause an early death. NEVER knew just how good he was. Cruget liked him better than Slew? Did not know that. Saw him last season at Saratoga where he exercises for many a trainer. Are we all getting that old?? I wouldn't say ever when you have Man O' War, Phar Lap, Eclipse, Kinscem, and others to consider.

We have a hard enough time getting HOTY let alone comparisons over decades and different surfaces.Ribot was the sire of Graustark and grand sire of Hoist the Flag who according to jockey Jean Cruguet was by far the best horse he ever rode and he was Seattle Slews jockey. This not to mention his impact as a sire on European racing. I only mention this not to get into a discussion of genetics and breeding but almost all of the great horses have left their mark in their descendants with few exceptions. Federico Tesio must have know something that worked because he in essence is the father of modern thoroughbreds on all continents through his method of selective breeding which I mention but know nothing about. Footlick, as you know I'm not about turf racing (until I recently developed a thirst for it) so I have no knowledge of those horses and I assumed anyone familiar with my comments would know this. Sometimes assumtions can be wrong. This is just my personal opinion.

Hoist the Flag was a very nice horse. I knew Jane Clarke whose family owned him and years later she could still get emotional about him. The Clarke family and others because I remember when he won I think the champagne everyone was speaking about a possible TC winner

Everyone have their own opinion. For me, he is the best ever. Horses just don't do the things he did, Ran each qtr faster than the previous, 4 record in 5 weeks(1:59 and change in the derby, from first to last in the club house turn and set a record-recently corrected, and polish off the Belmont in the 5th week with a 31 length victory and 2:24 for 1 1/2. Show me a resume like that and I'll reconsider my decision. The loss he had was just the mistake of human handling him, bad jockey, DQ because he split two horse that was block him, abscess, fever, abscess. Those losses is irrelevant to his career.

zxswordxz- we do know he sired many horses who could run on dirt, so I would say he probably would have had no problem with it. But, it is just conjecture. What I do know is that no horse ever extended him and he never lost at the highest level of racing. It is not meant to put Secretariat down but if you are talking about the greatest ever, then you need to know about the great Euros and the great Aussies. If you are talking about the greatest American horse, then that is different.

Ribot, undefeated in 16 starts in Italy, France and England, won back to back Arcs. Winning back to back Arcs and going undefeated and virtually untested is something Secretariat did not do. What Ribot did not do is run on dirt. All opinions on this topic are purely subjective. How can you say that his record trumps Ribot's. REsearch how many two time Arc winners there shave been and then compare it with how many TC winners there have been. All subjective. Any horse you bring up at this level was great.

Dirt or Turf, it didn't make a different for the Big Red Machine they call Secretariat. He was such a versatile horse and did it all in the short span that he race, I just wish the circumstance was different and he would have been able to run as a 4, 5 or even 6 Y.O. BTW...Many claim that he only learn to run in the fall of this 3y.o. campaign. @footlick - I know Ribot was a great one but what I don't know is how he can handle dirt. That is why I would rate Big Red over him. Yes, all opinion here is pretty much subjective.

Lets just be happy that most of the 3 yr old injuries/retirements to the top horses happened after the derby was over this year. The only top shelf horse to be sidelined early was Algorythms.
