Well rested after the grueling triple crown run.
it is definitely the super bowl of no. American horse racing, and the connections know, even if the horse doesn't. you won't find the amount of graded stakes winners in other races that you will find in this race.
since i live in the west, del mar, in a wonderful setting with spanish architecture, and old bay meadows where t'breds, harness, and quarters ran in the same year.
at man o' war's funeral, there were upwards of a million people in attendance. he was a national hero. he should have set the record for consecutive wins had he not had a starting snafu.
bloodhorse has rated 1) man o' war 2) secretariat 3) citation. i would put citation at second since noor, who beat him a few times, set records himself, so citation's competition was keener than sec's, and sec lost to inferior horses, though he set records in the triple crown.
man o war would have been undefeated had he not been turning around, facing in the opposite direction during that start against upset.
obviously, to win the triple crown, you not only have to be talented, but have good luck go with you through all 3. that injury from matterhorn just may be the reason that chrome didn't have passing gear in the lane.
the injury from the claimer matterhorn may have been chrome's undoing down the stretch. he is safely back at los al, and will rest up for pacific stakes, and then the bc classic, the no. american championship race.
