So glad he survived the ordeal of a Triple Crown challenge on dirt last year. I have nothing but respect for this horse. Not so much for his trainer.
Thank you for this write up! Risen Star never got a lot of credit. With a better trip, he would have been the 1988 Triple Crown winner. I, too, hoped he'd come back as a four year old. I think he would have been spectacular. Wasn't it Charlie Wittingham that wanted to train him after the Belmont? In his hands, who knows what Risen Star could have accomplished. And it would have silenced the critics of Secretariat as a sire!
I would love to see Shackleford go out a winner this Friday. He's been so good for horse racing. Fans need horses they can follow for a few years. He's a personal favorite of mine and I wish him and all his connections the best!
