The 2nd greatest race in my lifetime was the "Great Match" @ Belmont on July 6th, 1975 between Foolish Pleasure & a filly named Ruffian. Ruffian was opening the gap when both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg snapped. There is NO DOUBT,..............this filly wuda won this race! All but one of Ruffian's records still stand untouched today. The only exception was her Mother Goose Stakes record, which she raced in 1:47.80 and won by 131⁄2 lengths. Her record has only been beaten by Rachel Alexandra in 2009, who finished in 1:46.33 with a winning margin of 191⁄2 lengths! RIP Ruffian!
I was 13 when Secretariat won the Triple Crown & lived a couple of miles from Belmont! This racehorse was THEE Greatest racehorse of the 20th century! Since the June '73 Belmont Stakes,..................NO HORSE has ever approached Secretariat's time or the 31 lengths he won by! THAT's a FACT!!!!!
