Great blog piece. I bet you would enjoy the pictures I have on the Churchill backside feeding Shackleford peppermints for about an hour.
The 2013 Arc is his.
No idea why that posted for a second time, I certainly didnt mean for that to post again so if that second copy of my post is able to be removed that would be great. I'll address your comments rafirox. I would like to first compliment you on attempting to keep your critique of my comments on a level that didnt include name calling, that doesnt happen much but the facts give indication that the competition that Wise Dan is currently facing would be considered weak for 1 reason only. We've receive "Indication" that his connections would be more ambitious, and we continue to get the same 8f turf races run over and over again against competition that is considered the weakest division in horse racing. Again everyone has their own way of defining a horse, his quality and his ability. I am not arguing Wise Dan's abilities. What I am stating is that the top tier racing is done in the Handicap Division and the Turf division, that turf division being considered competing in races on turf at 10f+. Namely the United Nations, Man O' War, Arlington Millions, Joe Hirsch Turf and the Breeders Cup Turf. All of these races are contested at 10f+ with purses of $500k plus. To see the reigning Horse of the Year contested a 8f $150k stake was "UNDERWHELMING" at best. Regarding the horses that you mentioned, and again everyone has their own way of defining a horse but to mention Data Link the same horse that just ran 4th in a Grade 3 behind horses named King Kreesa, Howe Great and Big Screen, unfortunately causes your argument or your opinion to lose credibility. Also looking at the previous competition that Wise Dan has faced as opposed to who he has avoided for the past 12 months gives indication that again he's facing the worst possible quality of horse available. Looking at the PPS for 7 of his competitors, just 7 their record is something like 29/135, a tad bit below 25% if my memory serves me. Now what have we heard numberous times from the connections, well last year we heard, we may go in the Breeders Cup Classic, that was never a possibility, this year we're hearing them campaign not on the track for HOY but in interviews, "we might go in the whitney or woodward", "We need to get a dirt win to win HOY" no one has ever said or thought that, but i'll tell you what, ducking the arlington million to run in the FourStarDave, that is pathetic beyond reason. But as a buddy of mine stated, maybe they find it more important to be the best miler in America as opposed to the best turf horse because if you can't navigate 10f+ while horses like Little Mike and Point of Entry continue to knock heads in the turf division, that tells me that you are quite aware of your horses weaknesses, and that would mean that he's unable to get the 10f trip. Again each person has standards, unfortuantely in 2012 and 2013, the bar must be set very very low if I am seeing people question someone's calling of a horse's competition weak when you have to reference horses like (Lea & Optimizer) while running in races like the (Firecracker & targeting the Fourstardave). Again its called dodging when you skip a $500k race of prestige to run in a $150k race. As for the assesement of Game on Dude, he's running in Grade 1 races at all distances again all comers on dirt in open company. Wise Dan's people want a dirt win, they are always welcome to challenge Game On Dude on the dirt surface. No he's not beating world beaters out west, they are weak, but he's running in grade 1 races at 10f. while WD is running in Grade 2 races at 8f. Huge difference. IJS
I enjoyed the article and I have been one that has consistently stated that i have an issue with this horse (Wise Dan that is) getting the accolades that he does because of the schedule he runs in, many times running in Grade 2 and Grade 3 races, everyone has their expectations and everyone has criteria in which they judge top tier horses. Curlin is and Animal Kingdom are two horses that I look at and use as my bar. Did they win every race they ran in, no because that's difficult to do at the Grade or Group 1 level, but taking on all comers is a very difficult thing to do, but in looking at the way that Wise Dan has been campaigned he would not qualify to be ranked with any of these horses mentioned because of the soft schedule that his connections run him in. I am not a Wise Dan hater or basher, but I have an opinion about what a HOY should do or should be to garner votes for awards that are prestigious of this nature. Wise Dan sweeping 3 awards in 2012 from horses that did much more bothers me. Unfortuantely it seemed to be a year in which there were no strong candidates but I believe the awards were won in social media. With reference to Andy Murray the only way to compare him to Wise Dan would be if Andy Murray went back to his college and took on competition there in an attempt to win another tennis tournament after winning Wimbeldon.
Thank you for the compliment, but the facts are easily found to validate my statement. the internal fractions were 1/4: 23.66 1/2: 23.61 3/4: 23.68 Mile: 25.38 Finish: 14.18 this gives indication that the final 3/8ths was run in 39:56, that wont win you a great deal of races above ungraded stakes on dirt. Data supplied - Facts Verified. Did you have any other questions. Maybe I should supply the link for you to be able to research this yourself??? Let me know.
Wise Dan would be embarrassed by the routers running now days, he closed his last furlong in the SF in 14+ seconds, he's a Grade 2 horse on dirt at best, most likely G3, he should stay in the ranks of the milers and hope that Point of Entry returns and doesnt start off his comeback in a mile race becasue he would not be able to run with POE. True class is shown by means of speed and staying power, horses that sprint can stretch out to 8f fairly easily and sometimes can get 8.5f. going 9furlongs and closing in 14+ seconds told the world and his connections everything that they needed to know about his weaknesses. He was exposed and they have ducked and run and hid in the weakest division in the U.S. he's continuing to defeat BigBlueKitten and Corporate Jungle seem to impress some, ask him to step up and defeat Little Mike and Point of Entry in turf races that matter, namely the Arlington Million, Man O War, Sword Dancer, Joe Hirsch and B C Turf, thats when he'll begin to get my respect. I dont wanna see him be embarrassed on dirt just show he is worthy of winning turf awards because he runs in the biggest races on turf, not the firecracker, ben ali and fourstardave. Pathetic.
How do you rank Wise Dan #3 in the Handicap division?
I agree. amazing we are at this juncture right now I wrote a similar blog back in 09. http://afleetalexforever.blogspot.com/2009/08/pursuit-of-perfection-or-pursuit-of.html?m=1
Horrible and embarrasing campaign by Wise Dans ownership. This horse is of no consequence at the top level of racing because he always drops and runs in g2 or g3 races.
