Definitely the 2014 Big 'Cap. Almost broke the world record for a mile and a quarter at seven years old. What an awesome horse.
Glad to see him! Hope he is happy in retirement!
Grabbed quarter out of his hoof which probably happened when he bounced out of the gate. Probably contributed to his loss. Being checked out now.
I was thinking 10 but recently I am starting to think he will get 4.
They delayed it again and said they will announce their decision tomorrow.
Pretty sure it is Wednesday, June 4th - 3 days before the race.
Depends on nothing. If California Chrome wins the Triple Crown, no other horse has a chance to be HOTY over him.
Yes, but he did that in the San Felipe at a mile and a sixteenth. A mile and a half is a supernatural monster. We have seen so many horses change tactics in the Belmont and it usually doesn't work. I think Chrome has his best shot conserving energy and running down a couple horses ahead of him while having enough energy saved to hold off Danza, Commanding Curve, etc. 'Chrome has won 6 in a row, 5 of them stalking the pace, so why change what seems to work?
No, especially in the case of Smarty Jones, many of these horses deserved to win the Belmont. In the Belmont, Smarty Jones ran the first mile and a quarter in 2:00 2/5. That would beat almost every Kentucky Derby winner when the race was over for them. Smarty' was running at a mile and a half and only lost by a length. And with Real Quiet, he lost by an inch. I don't think an inch or a length after running sensational times is the difference between a horse that deserved the Triple Crown and one that was just "hype." This isn't bitterness over those losses, but I think California Chrome fits the category of those horses and that he probably will win the Belmont Stakes if Espinoza doesn't make the mistake made many times before.
Just remember that was 36, 37, and 41 years ago. In recent years, Triple Crown hopefuls who went to the lead or made an early move lost. Recently, Belmont winners have been almost exclusively stalkers, which California Chrome is. I think he should run like he usually does but, due to a mile and a half, save a bit of energy for the stretch which has always gotten the ones like Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Charismatic (even though he was injured), Funny Cide, and Smarty Jones. All of those horses changed racing tactics and didn't have anything left when closers came to get them. I hope California Chrome won't join that category.
