Ironically, DRF's Mike Watchmaker offered a companion piece to your article describing the hyperbole that followed PM's Jim Dandy win: http://www.drf.com/blogs/weekend-notes-1. He starts by saying "The notion that Palace Malice ... has somehow moved to the forefront of the ... division ... is ridiculous." His 1st draft was presented Sunday morning BEFORE the Haskell. I think the cool thing about not having any particular standout is that we get to see this whole thing unfold over the entirety of the year. (Viva Verrazano!)
Trivial note: at 2008 BC, Mike Smith referred to 2yo F champion Stardom Bound as his "Little Zenyatta." Turns out Stardom Bound was sired by Tapit.
I believe no change was the right call. There were 2 somewhat minor incidents ( a) T.C. bumping Setsuko at head of stretch, and b) T.C. steadying/leaning into G.O.D.) combined with circumstance that created the totality of the overall incident. I would like to blame circumstance, but since CA is NOT a no-fault state, the fault lies with Twirling Candy!
