I was a Verrazano fan through Spring and came to realize during the Triple Crown campaign that a mile and 1/8 was about what to expect. He was Shackleford. The Summer and Fall have been brightened by the rising star of Will Take Charge. THAT guy needs to stay on the track at least 1 more year. He's the one horse of this year's 3YO's that has unfinished business that he can accomplish that Orb and Verrazano could not.
Now if only the industry in the U.S. could unify, perhaps sanctions such as this would be a deterrent to any U.S.-based trainers with like minds.
Were Orb's FL Derby #'s impressive?
I'm with you on this colt. His last was impressive even though not a win. If he turns back the field in the Arkansas Derby with the same type of trip, I think he & Gemologist will have done enough to warrant some serious consideration for that mile and a quarter rodeo in May.
Down the stretch of the 1 mile and a furlong Illinois Derby and it appeared no one had any gas left in the tank except Done Talking as he passed some boys who really didn't need that last 1/16th of a mile. No Kentucky Derby winner out of this bunch. Just sayin'.
.Gemologist coasting at the eighth pole with Castellano flailing the stick, he spots Alpha challenging on the outside and digs deep to finish Alpha off in the Wood Memorial. This guy has heart. When they look a closer in the eye and fire the way he did, especially on the Aqueduct surface, that tells you we now have a real contender. He can bring it.
