Anyone else going to take a chance on him, hoping Doug O'Neill can do the impossible 2 weeks in a row?
How do you all rate Thunder Gulch's offspring?
Shesthewinner was claimed in her first race for my partners and I. The nature of the claimer game I suppose.
I agree if he gets those odds, that's great value.
You are correct on the payouts. Last year I think the top 3 choices finished 1, 2, 3 but overall payouts have been nice. I was just mentioning that in the new system, the winner has been fairly easy to pick after their last prep. I can't imagine someone picking against Nyquist, Ap or Chrome, in any of the last years. They were obvious favorites. Since Mastery went down, this year is much different.
Doug O'Neill certainly has stepped up his game. He's been getting the most out of his horses lately. I still can't believe how incredible this was. It was such an odd race to watch. It reminded me of Oxbows Preakness win.
I agree. I was off IWC going into this race and he made me eat crow. He is definitely landed on my short list after the way he ran this race. I am weary of the track record of wood winners but this year feels different than in years past.
You are correct. Also I believe that since the points system has been in place, the morning line favorite has won each Kentucky Derby.
Great read. Calumet is one of those farms that make the sport more exciting when there is a contender in play. (Also very good bourbon.) Hence is a horse that intrigues me this year. With most of the more talked about horses turn up a flop or two and not being able to separate themselves from the pack, I think this is going to be different type of year. I mean we all knew California Chrome, American Pharaoh and Nyquist were going to win, even Orb was a pretty obvious choice. For the first time since 2011, I have no idea who is going to win, but Hence is on my short list of horses I'd put money on to win it.
Patch is another that could pull it off. He didn't win but he looked great while running. He may not have as impressive a stat sheet but he also doesn't have a clunker on his resume either.
Sonneteer most likely won't have the speed to defeat Malagacy or Classic Empire this weekend. I do like him if he has a decent price. However not in the derby.
I like your take in this article. Also, ditto on Iliad. This could be a derby to break the streak of favorites winning and should make it more exciting. Every entrant is going to have a mark against them this time. Irish War Cry was the most impressive out of the three races, but given the Wood's recent lack of success, I don't know if I can wager on him.
