He trained my guy Sheba. Jack was such a great horseman, he proved horses don't need Lasix when Alysheba broke two track records in two straight races without his usual "juice".
Jack Van Berg was/is one of the best.
He has 2 G1s. And WTC's Eclipse award from last year shows how the fall campaign is what the voters look at. I feel bad for GOD that the Big Cap is in the spring. If he ran that 1:58 in the fall he'd be at least in consideration for HOTY.
URR, I said Palace Malice has been managed better. Why run against the big boys when there's graded races with decent purses that are yours for the taking? I think WTC is a very good horse, and was deserving of last year's 3yo Eclipse award, but he has not run as well as he should have this year. I blame Lukas.
He is in no way a "throwback" to horses like Exterminator, who won at 2 1/4 miles as a 3yo and made 99 career starts.
Will Take Charge has had 1 win, 3 seconds, and a complete bomb so far this year. Palace Malice has had 4 wins. Palace Malice has been at least the better managed of the two at 4, and in my eyes has been a better horse as well.
That happens to be Lukas's specialty, not Pletcher's. Pletcher happens to be one of few large operation trainers I actually like. He has done a wonderful job with both Palace Malice and Princess of Sylmar. Danza is currently having time off because Pletcher put the horse first instead of going after the Belmont and a $1.5 mil purse. It is the owners' decision on whether to retire a horse or not. The trainer generally does not decide.
He might have 30 years ago, but now that horses get 4-6 weeks between races he surely won't.
Also was last early behind a moderately slow pace.
Are you the owner? If so, congratulations on his win!
