Maybe I am mistaken but wasn't his name just removed from the balloting for THIS year?
I am currently following a horse mentioned in this article (Madame Mistletoe) who, unfortunately, has now fallien into the low level claiming ranks at Beulah Park. Would love to hear from anyone here that has any info on her from the time she left Tim's barn up to present. You can email me at CarolinaJude@aol.com! Thanks!
A very well put article. We die-hard Zenyatta fans will always be looking for a horse even REMOTELY related to her to be as brilliant as she was which is unfair and will always result in being disappointed. I, for one, have FINALLY accepted Ebby for just who she is and nothing more, nothing less and plan to share this article with my fellow Zenyatta fans who still can't seem to "get there".
There isn't one that won't be missed but the most tragic for me, personally, was Mentor Cane. I think he had such promise and may have been the best horse in John Shirreffs' barn to come along in a very long time.....
I really liked this big guy.........and so sad to pass away at such a young age.....
I totally enjoyed this, too! Not everyone thinks of the great Northern Dancer when it comes to November of 1963 except true racing fans!!!! But everyone sure does think of him when May of 1964 comes to mind! Thanks for this!
I couldn't agree with you more!!!! I just HATE NBC coverage of horse racing, Especially when they fawn over the celebrities in attendance (especially at the Derby) and everyone's STUPID hats!
One only has to look at the wealth of race age mares in the current Keeneland sale to realize it's not just about the colts. Racing (i.e. the greedy owners) can't/won't even keep our fillies and mares racing when there is more money to be made in the breeding shed. But the other side of that coin is with all of the breakdowns (ESPECIALLY this year) you can't blame many of them for winning as many of the major races as possible and then getting their horses off the track while they are still in one piece.
I am just devastated about this guy......SO promising! Can't imagine what John is feeling.....
I saw this race (as I did most of the races by all three of these greats) and, being a Damascus fan I was walking on air for months afterwards! That little bay colt to this day I don't think gets the credit for just how GREAT he really was.....
