I'm afraid I'm a bit more skeptical. I think that the way modern racehorses are trained, the surfaces, and even the way the jockeys ride nowadays all factor into whether we'll see a TC winner again. My vote is no. And near misses don't count...I don't care how many there have been, it punctuates even more strongly how hard it is for a modern racehorse to accomplish this feat.
THose of you who want to monday morning quarterback this thing...there is no way that ROsario could have brought Orb to the outside, then had enough horse at the end to catch Oxbow. Rail dirt was deep & sticky...that's a fact...and his running mates KEPT him on the rail. Joel had to choose between backing him off the pace, which 99% of horses don't ever recover from, swing him around, then beat the crap out of him to catch Oxbow & the rest...would NEVER happen. Stop trying to blame the horse. Circumstances took care of his trip, period.
Thank you for confirming what Shug & others who would know have already felt. That the one post was a huge disadvantage for Orb & that his competition took full advantage of that.
Wish I could be there.
He's a special horse who needs a special name...Hope SS picks a good one!
