I buy a set of four glasses each year. I also get some from Churchill Downs the years we go to the Derby. I have boxes of glasses stacked to the ceiling of my bedroom closet, and I don't know what I'll do if we move into a condo in a few years when my son goeas off to college. I guess I'll have to get a storage rental unit at the local facility. So how many do I have? Dozens and dozens. I've always said that I want every person who attends my funeral someday to walk out of the funeral home with a Derby glass. Why, you wonder? Because of all the many places I've travelled and events I've attended the Kentucky Derby is that one annual event that ALWAYS puts a big ol' smile on my face, even if I don't have the ticket for the Animal Kingdom of the day! I mean, come on, how could you be in a bad mood at the Kentucky Derby? How could you not have a complete blast? So if I kick the bucket before YOU do, come to my funeral and get a free Derby glass while they last!

I have a scattered collection of glasses from the 80's, 90's and 2000's, some I got at the Derby, some I received from friends & a mysterious paper deliveryman, and still others I found at Goodwills, antique shops & swap meets. It's about the chase - spying a dusty julep glass in a case full of jelly jars, for instance - and enjoying the artwork on them that is so unique to the eras they were made. Plus, it's got a horse on it!

I love Derby Glasses! My collection dates back to 1964 (with the exception of 1970). I started collecting when I worked at Churchill Downs in the late 90's and never stopped. My favorite designs include: '64, '74,'77, and '85. But my favorite glass may be 1982. That year my parents sat on Millionaire's Row - their first and only time. A sticky Derby Glass was my souvenir from their special day. I carried that glass around until I dropped it. I was broken-hearted! I carry my 1982 replacement very carefully!

Yes Andy I do have all Derby glasses from 1948. I have some of the rare variations of the 1956 glass. And am working on collecting the aluminum glass which 1940 vintage. Those are hard to find. I hate to say but I also have all the Preakness and Belmont glasses aas well. I have numerous ones from old tracks like Miles Park and Commodore Downs. My racing glass collection is one of my passions.

Yes Andy. I have large cabinets with glass doors and shelves. I use the acrylic spice holders you can get from Amazon etc. to form three deep of rows of six glasses. The spice racks allow each glass to be seen in a slightly elevated position. I try and group my glasses, such Florida Derby, Hambletonian, Adios, Santa Anita Handicap etc

I know the purses won't be what they were a few years ago, but I like playing Monmouth Park, since it plays well into what I like to look when handicapping. I just hope they're able to maintain a good portion of what they were a few years ago & not turn into a shell of its former self, like Atlantic City.

That's nice Andy, but if you read the bill the only place taking Internet gaming will be the Casinos in Atlantic City. That is the the gist of the bill that just came out of Committee this week. You may be referring to the OLD bill that would have allowed gaming at the tracks as well. This New bill is opposed by the Standardbred horsemen because they are NOT allowed to set any Internet gaming activity at the tracks. This new bill is for AC only.

Andy if you want to read about the bill I am discussing go to the Standardbred website and look under "bill to provide Internet gaming for atlantic City". Just so there is no mistake the title of the Bill from committee is The Atlantic City Internet gaming bill. No mistake on its intentions.

The problem with Drf is that they are behind the news curve in NJ. Drazin is speaking about the first bill that would have allowed tracks and AC to set up sports betting etc. but AC is clearly, in my opinion concerned that Horse racing did not die in NJ as they hoped but at the Meadowlands is doing alot better than thought and more than likely Monmouth will be more successful. Gural is opening his OTB parlor sooner than thought and is combining with

With American dream. Also going on is the Internet gaming and poker bill that could benefit the tracks, but the people from Atlantic city want the only servers to be located in AC. They are saying that online betting would only be legal if allowed in NJ OR if new casinos are built in other parts of the state. Christie is seeking an opinion from the AG on this. There are things that could benefit horse racing from the Internet but rest assured AC will try and monopolize. Ron Dancer had a bill pass that would let people at tracks use smart phones etc for placing bets.

The poker bill could be what Drazin is referring to. That has some potential as I mentioned for horse racing BUT lots of hurdles on that. Basically right there at least three bills kicking around on Internet gaming in NJ

Andy. Ray Kerrison of the NY Post had a nice article about Monmouths openning. You should read it. I think like Gural running Meadowlands, horsemen running Monmouth will in the end improve the track. Ironically , the state getting out of horse racing may indeed be the best thing that happened to both tracks.

Sounds Like Good News for Racing at Monmouth Park in 2012?
Monmouth Park in New Jersey will hold a 141-day meet in 2012 while the state reopens the bidding for a long-term lease of the track under a deal that was discussed on Friday between the state’s horsemen and the office of Gov. Chris Christie, officials of the horsemen’s organization said.

Andy. I am thrilled by it. I do not want to see any race track go down. And if you thought I did, you are wrong. But what happened here is that is that the ties between the two tracks was broken and the deals have now moved separately. Which is a good thing, because I think that Hanson and Christie tied the two tracks together so they could play harness and thoroughbred owners against each other. Gural, according to the harness sites is signing Monday for the Meadowlands and will be approved Tuesday for the lease. Which is good news for the harness community as there meet opens Jan 6 or 7. The reason the horsemen wanted to meadowlands at Monmouth was to get some of the revenue from simulcasting etc. to supplement purses. It is interesting because I re read an article in Hoofbeats, the standardbred publication written by Bill Finley and he basically says that Bailey was wanting out very early in the process. The article while published in August 2011, details the original meetings among Christie, Bailey, Forbes Gural etc. you should read it, because it shows how disorganized the thoroughbred side was. Granted this article is written from the harness side, but there is alot of interesting day to day.

Hopefully Monmouth will be ok. I do think that the letter from the City of Oceanport helped here alot. I think it reminded Christie what happened to revenues and jobs in the area. My only hope is that Frank Stronach does not get involved. While Christie would have his hands dealing that mercurial individual, so frankly would everyone else.

There is an article in the Standardbredowners of NJ website that Sweeney is making sure that Problems at Monmouth do not impact Meadowlands. And also he has proposed that the simulcasting issues not affect Meadowlands continued operations. This is the strongest sign yet that people are recognizing that the tracks outcomes have to be separated.

On the contrary, buckpasser, I really wanted to hear your analysis of the situation, as you seem to know quite a bit about what is goin on and that you have a sincere interest in NJ racing. I don't like the 141 days on racing. If the purses are going down then don't further dilute the resources with more racing days.

I agree with you Andy about the 141 days of racing. It is too much. Purses and quality will go down. Bailey was promising $400k a day for purses if the track ran 74 days. Forbes and other horsemen were against it. This is one of the clashes that Bailey had with the TB group in NJ and why he wanted out. Now the purses are going to be taken from track revenue, which I don't think is a good idea. The TB group signed off on the simulcasting with Gural and would not let that hold Gural up from opening The Meadowlands. Also Sweeney in the NJ legislature is also making sure that the simulcasting does not sink the Meadowlands. To me the ironic aspect of the entire matter of both tracks is that Christie and Hansen thought that by tying the two tracks together and go after the Meadowlands first, thinking it was the weaker link, they did not count on Gural coming in at the last moment with a group of investors . By allowing the meadowlands a respite, Gural allowed The TB horsemen to get it together to save Monmouth.

Everyone in New Jersey who loves horse racing should be thankful to Gural. It also should be a lesson to both TB and standardbred horsemen that their interests are one and the same and the must stand together on issues that affect the tracks.

I don't know if anyone is aware but Brunetti has filed a lawsuit challenging the NJ horsemen running Monmouth. He was the 2nd highest bidder to Morris Bailey. At first it looked like Monmouth might not be able to open in May, but it will open. His challenge is that when Bailey pulled out the state should have openned the bidding back up. Also the deal was no subsidies were to be granted to run the meet. NJ sports authority is giving large loans to the NJ horsemen to run Monmouth.

Morris bailey pulled out I heard because he did not want to put up with 12 million in losses but would be willing to go for 6 to 8 million in losses. He is back in the picture as one of the investors on the no horsemens side. Brunetti does make a couple of valid legal points

Beautiful, Matt. Thank you for sharing this important and personal topic. Thousands more, like myself, will read this article today and learn more about Autism. I can't wait to see you and Riley at the track!

Matt, I guess you know that one of the more difficult social situations is that at least in my 21 yo son's case, as he is a high functioning person with autism, he looks typical, but then with his near zero patience level, there can be a scene at the most inopportune times. You know the stares. God bless you and your family. The time when your son must transition from the daily routine of school will be very tough. If your son is like mine he remembers every single detail of your times together visiting the track, minute by minute details. Hope you have many nice times together. omg what do you say to the questions about why he has autism or if he'll be "cured"? I've heard it all, I think. Anyway, great cause, Autism Awareness, because apparently the occurrence of autism is rising. People that are affected with autism are the most brilliant and innocent of beings.

Very good to read, the hidden gifts of horses. For anyone interested, there's a documentary about this called The Horse Boy. A couple with a severely autistic son of about 4, still not toilet trained, etc. The parents exhaustion and wit's end is completely palpable. The father grew up around horses and his son suddenly calms down one day when he puts him on a horse, so he hatches the plan that the 3 of them go to Mongolia-horse and shaman country, to see if that helps their son. Pretty amazing and would recommend it to anyone.
