Floridaf · Chris, I felt the exact same way about MMM. I look forward to seeing him build on the foundation he established at Gulfstream. Wes, I completely overlooked Horse of the Meet. As I stated, there really was not a true standout, but if I had to choose, I would select Mucho Macho Man. Ron the Greek flattered his Sunshine Millions win with a score in the Big Cap, and MMM beat a couple of tough competitors in Jackson Bend and Tackleberry in the Gulf Cap. I NEVER use these figures as a handicapping tool, because, like stevebiscuit, I feel it is impossible to assign a number to a horse's performance. NickGunritz · If you're following close enough you'd see that there is definitely some problems with the official timing system at Gulfstream. There is definitely no way that Algorithms went 136.17 and the number that Trackus gives of 135.09 is definitely closer to the true final time. Besides that I love the Beyer Speed Figures, but not because I put a ton of faith in them, instead you can exploit the fact that the public does and you can find false favorites because of that BIG BOLD NUMBER in the Form is so front and center. I timed another race, and found my time on that to be slightly faster than the official time as well. Giving me cause to think that Algorithms did indeed run closer to 1.36 flat. · 118 days ago ·

Dead Heat, Beyer did all the newcomers a favor by putting out a reference point to begin handicapping and quickly eliminating certain horses much to the detriment of people like myself. Now that I don't bet very often it makes no difference but is used way back. There is nothing to explain everything. Einstein couldn't do it how do you expect Beyer to? Always looking for the easy answer and there is one. If you don't like them don't use them. I have to chuckle when I here the new young experts speak of energy distribution figures and their impact on handicapping. Watch the horse run a few races and you'll have your energy answers. I wonder what they did for thousands of years before electricity? DeadHeat · Nick, then what whould you suggest? I hand time races all the time, it does not take a rocket scientist to do so, and for you to even act like it does is completely rediculous. Watching does not give you all the answers. That is why there are charts, that is why there are splits. Algorithms was slowing down through that race, not getting faster. Hansen set him up. Did Algorithms look good, he did, but after reading the chart there is no way I'm ready to call him the fastest 3yr old in the America, which is basically what Beyer is telling us. Icy, I don't expect Beyer to do everything I expect him to use what is known and not base something off of debate. He has no clue if the 1.35 is actually right or not, but we do know that the 1.36 is what is out there and what is being used. This is not a favor, honestly, especially not today. broxtone · Beyer has written in one of his books not directly about the shortcomings of the figures.He wrote about a futuristic system that could keep track of the distance each horse actually ran.This is not timed as precisely as a track and field event where the start is staggered allowing the outside runners to get a lead because they are outside.Their is also bumping and stopping in horseracing because there are no lanes.Beyer made a tidy sum when he was the only one that had the Beyer speed figures,now anyone that buys the form has them.There will not be the kind of betting overlays that the numbers revealed when he was the only one that had them. · 117 days ago ·

icyhotboo · @DeadHeat, either purposely or inadvertently you answered your own question when you stated in your reply to me that"you don't expect Beyer to do everything." You as a handicapper should be doing "all" the work. As far as watching a horse run that is still only part of the puzzle we are trying to solve by using as much past information attainable to us to predict the future which can get really tricky. While it's possible I might have somewhere I don't generally refer to speed figures as Beyer's as they were around in one form or another long before A. Beyer made his mark. For as much criticism this guy gets (A. Beyer) even from me you really have to love him. Out of tens of thousands of races run annually he can't pick a winner to save his life but he can tell you what you did wrong after the race is run and get paid well doing it. Lighten up on the guy he's a self described "bum who got lucky." Instead of being so critical of Beyer in your search for a winner read the blogs because there are some good handicappers here you could learn more. To be more blunt chat with them pre-race and share thoughts or simply see who is putting some hot horses up at the moment or consistently. Getting back to SF there arbitrary numbers that differ from person to person or in this high tech society I should say tout to tout. Here's a novel idea. The ENTIRE purpose of a Beyer figure is to be used as a handicapping tool/aid for wagering purposes. The BSF number only tells you how fast a horse ran, not how or why> Beyer himself would toss a horse like Bellamy Road out following a devastating wood Memorial win when he surely earned a high fig BECAUSE he was completely unchallenged throughout the race. In the ensuing Derby, it was VERY obvious that BR would not maike the lead and had no chance - therefore he is a toss DESPITE being the top BSF horse. Better yet, why would I trust your times? Furthermore, unless it's a turf race I don't expect a horse to be running faster at the finish, especially when he's being hand ridden because he had the race won at the top of the stretch. For those who ask, yes I am familiar with how Beyer makes his figures, I have said so numerous times, and it's not rocket science. Nick, the official time being posted is not the 1.35. That is used by Beyer and his team. Other major sites have the official clocking down as 1.36 flat. I also never said you had to trust my times, however, what I did was fairly close to most of the original clockings, which obviously means I'm not that far off. Seperate hand times will almost always show a little difference as was the case here. Icy, I don't have a question. As a handicapper I don't expect Beyers to be the be all end all, however if your going to call yourself a pro at something then make sure you are as accurate as possible and are putting out info that corresponds with what the other stats are, the official stats. Speed figures are so subjective if your a serious person you almost have to make your own or pay a good service to save you time.If you don't want to do either you can average different outlets figures. Accurrate information is essential as you point out. You obviously have perseverence and patience that's more than half the battle won. DeadHeat · Brian, when the times are over the same track and same day, it matters, especially when there is over a second difference. Had one horse raced in Cali and the other in FL then I would discount them, but that is not the case. Also, RTG was not getting to Macho, that race was won at the top of the stretch. Also, just because AF is unbeaten doesn't mean she can't be beaten at all. Who has she faced? Outside of the BC, her races at Calder and two last year were not exactly brimming with talent. Many think she'll be beaten this year by one of the other few main fillies and mares returning this year. You cannot simply overlook time and competition. If that was the case then why keep track and why even run them? Mucho ran the better race that day. AF is a very good filly and ran a good race, but you can't simply throw away reason and stats. Based on the month of Jan, stats show MMM is the better horse. · 121 days ago ·

Ann Maree · I think I made some of my points in your threads on Facebook....I love both of these horses, and MMM has had my heart since the Risen Star last year. That being said, I think the effort by Awesome Feather was bigger than MMM's, though not by a huge amount. Awesome Feather had to give 6 pounds to all her competitors, except for one filly that she gave 4 pounds to. To me that made the difference in the effort between these two. Each has more than demonstrated that we will have a high old time this year watching them challenge others in their divisions in 2012. Hoping that both of them stay healthy, of course. Love MMM since he has filled out his huge frame...he was just a kid last year running against older horses, and we are fortunate, or rather he was, to have gotten through the tough season withough serious injury given his being the youngster of the sophomores. MMM I believe actually got a couple pounds from Turbo, which he probably didn't need. If this is for the purpose of deciding your star of the week, this might need to be the week you have co-stars! Floridaf · Personally, I think MMM needed to get a little more out of his SM race than AF did. Feather is a proven champion, but MMM had a lot of maturing to do since last year. With that being said, neither of their trainers have mapped out a plan for them, so who know what the ultimate goal was for their races this past weekend. I would argue, though, that MMM faced a much tougher field than AF did, which would account for the difference in winning times and margins. · 121 days ago ·

icyhotboo · I never questioned MMM ability as a horse to get 1 1/8 mile but I did question his losing a shoe in two consecutive graded races to me that was one to many and I was either going to bet another or pass as I don't bet "trouble" horses. Since they chose to show a scintillating interview with the trainer of MMM instead of letting us bettors see the horses I had no choice but to pass as I was watching on line not trackside and just managed to get a glimpse of the #1 DOM for about 5 seconds and couldn't really tell but he looked like he was lathered. I know GP has been known for some freakish performances, but its encouraging going forward that MMM can also take his show on the road. For Awesome Feather to dual into those fractions and keep going was sensational. I would still like to see how it would've played out had Delightful Mary not ran up her backside on the far turn. Ann Maree · Nice piece, Ashley. Just a couple of points: Saying that Mucho Macho Man has not won at a distance greater than a mile 70 yards (isn't Risen Star a tad longer, I could be wrong?) and therefore is a question mark at 1 1/8 really doesn't tell the whole story. He ran a very respectable third in the Derby, just barely missing being second in that race, and he did not disgrace himself with a 6 in the Preakness, and 7 in the Belmont, especially considering the colt was still actually only a 2 yr old basically running against older horses . I think he can get the distance just fine. Probably in the Belmont, you could say the distance was a little outside his ability, but, the miracle was he didn't finish last...@ 7th, he stayed to finish ahead of a few horses. I believe MMM's experience in those races, though, will stand him in good stead, and, as you suggest, his success in his recent allowance race should boost his confidence. He should be a force to reckon with in 2012, and I'm looking forward to watching him, and all of the grads from the Class of 2011 give us some great racing this year. Besides, the story of the Lazarus horse and the Lazarus trainer resonates with the fans, and racing can always use some "good news". · 129 days ago ·

Looks like Mucho Macho Man has filled out his big frame iand is quite the Man (Sunshine Millions Classic). I'm so glad Awesome Feather(filly and mare race) is healthy and running. Little Mike (turf) and Apriority (sprint) are the other favorites. And Musical Romance (filly and mare sprint) is another favorite. 12 Clip · Good article Laura. The transformation of First Dude from a front-runner to a closer has been quite a transformation for the son of Stephen Got Even. His new style is so much better suited for his body-type. The Dude is a big colt that hits the ground hard. The way he closed in the Gold Cup reminded me of how Curlin use to grind them down. A winner of three in-a-row, it now seems like The Dude has no problem taking pictures in the winners circle. I think his style is perfect for Churchill Downs and the classic distance. And remember he was in the race last year as a three-year-old against one of the best fields ever assembled. This year I can visualize him getting a similar trip to the one Blame got in the Classic. There's still alot of racing til then, and Baffert needs to figure out what his next race will be. Although the Pacific Classic looks like the most likely spot. I'm not so sure if First Dude will be able to grip and dig as well on Del Mar's poly-track. He is 3 for 3 in the money lifetime on synthetic tracks, so with him I think the surface probably doesn't matter, but nonetheless it is Del Mar · 323 days ago ·

arazi · First Dude is a bit of an enigma. He's a big, strong horse that almost doesn't need the lead, but races out front. He seems to run all day, but often fades on the turn and then comes back. If you watch the Florida Derby replay, it's one of the strangest runs I've ever seen. He's right there at the top of the stretch, then he drops back, then he comes on again. He sort of did the same thing in the Preakness, but less so. It will be interesting to see what he does with blinkers off, that may do the trick... but the gut says that this is a horse that hasn't quite figured out how to win.
