St. James's Palace Stakes

What the Nation is saying about the St. James's Palace Stakes...

What star studded field.Dawn Approach, Toronado, Mars, Magician, George Vancouver, Dundonnell, Leitir Mor? What a strong group. I'll cut Dawn Approach some slack after his dismal performance last out going 12f which was not in his range... 1st- Dawn Approach 2nd- Toronado 3rd- Mars 4th- Dundonnell. So excited for tomorrow!

  • rafirox · Thank you, Gallops. That he was. Dawn Approach has a long, fluid stride in which he has shown on a conistent basis and he did here. He got a slight bump with about 2f remaining but he kept his composure (no tugging or pulling) and made a very effort-filled rally on the outside. Toronado is a pretty good racehorse as well, but Dawn Approach is the star. · 1 day ago ·

Will forgive Dawn Approach for his last out and give the nod, just barely, over Toronado, who had a excuses for his 4th last out. Both followed by Dundonnell.
  • yukichan · Well, I did say Dawn Approach just barely over Toronado. And indeed it was. Kudos to both for surviving a games of dominos there in the stretch. · 1 day ago ·

  • yukichan · Thank you for the spotlight on Ascot! There will be plenty of exciting moments, no doubt! So glad TVG will be covering the meeting. Hard to argue against Power here, especially with a past win on this course under his belt. I think if there was an upset, it could come from Most Improved (toss that messy French Derby) or Dragon Pulse or Hermival (if heavy going). Agree that this one will be a thriller because there are many stand-outs here! · 367 days ago ·

THE brilliant Frankel stretched his unbeaten run to seven by landing the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday. Sent off at 30-100, Frankel stormed clear turning for home, but began to fade as the Aidan O'Brien-trained Zoffany got going for Ryan Moore. Read More
  • medlocke · Given the severity of the mistake made by Tom Queally with that very premature move in the St James's Palace, Frankel is very lucky that it was just inferior 3yr.old's that he was facing today, IMO. He was definitely paddling at race's end, and Zoffany was closing on him like a shot. Henry Cecil's been talking about taking Frankel to Goodwood next to take on Canford Cliffs in this year's G1 Sussex Stakes. But what I saw out of Canford Cliffs and Goldikova in the Queen Anne today, if Frankel had been facing top level, older milers like Canford Cliffs or Goldikova in this race? He definitely would've been swept aside, and dealt his first career loss today. JMO. · 736 days ago ·

  • Rossington · Right after Frankel crossed the wire just 3/4 of a length ahead of Zoffany in the St Jame's Palace, the camera man spanned his camera into the stand's, and pointed it at Sir Henry Cecil. A picture really is worth a thousand word's. Because Cecil had a real look of disgust on his face for jockey Tom Queally not carrying out his instruction's, and very nearly allowing his star colt to get at the wire by Zoffany. Cecil did not look happy, one bit. I'd imagine he'll be telling Tom Queally that from now on, he ride's Frankel Henry's way, or no way at all!! · 736 days ago ·

  • ruffian75 · I remember when Giant's Causeway came to the 2000 BC Classic, first time to run on dirt. Ran a champion race in a close losing effort to Tiznow. A friend of mine mentioned prior to the race that he was going with GC & Tiznow, stating that although it was GC's first effort on dirt, he was on the extreme outside, and he wouldn't have any dirt kicked in his face. Maybe Frankel can draw the outside, and not be fazed. · 736 days ago ·

  • medlocke · He romped at Royal-Ascot last season when he beat Klammer and the Epsom Derby 2nd, Treasure Beach, by a huge margin to win the G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes. Frankel really is a freak of nature. One of those very special horses that comes along that a trainer is lucky to ever have one in a lifetime!! Frankel really is as advertised, and more!! · 740 days ago ·

  • rossington · There's going to be some other very decent 3yr.old's in the St James's Palace Stakes field that are already G1 winners in Europe themselves. I.E., Dream Ahead, Wootton Bassett, Excelebration, and Zoffany. That said, Frankel is literally in a league all his own among his 3yr.old pears. The running of the St James's Palace is almost just a formality, IMO. Frankel's likely to never be truly tested until he step's up against older horses. They say that great horses can run on any surface? Henry Cecil brought Twice Over to America in 2009 to try and win the Breeders Cup Classic. But IMO, if Cecil so chose to put Frankel on the conventional dirt at Churchill Downs? This horse would give him a much bigger chance of winning the Breeders Cup Classic than he had with Twice Over. With all of the better conventional dirt horses now retired, I.E., Zenyatta, Blame, Lookin At Lucky, and Quality Road, likely as not, Frankel would romp against what's left among the American hopeful's in this year's Classic. What more can be written about Goldikova?  Put her in a race at a mile on good ground and she'll get it done time and again.  For a moment in the Queen Anne Stakes it looked like Paco Boy might have the momentum to go by Goldikova in the shadow of the wire.  But the champion mare...Read More
