Gio Ponti deserves a ton of respect!! He's pretty much single handed carried the flag for the past 3 seasons for American turf racing, and has shown he's also capable of running a big race on synthetic surfaces also. With his 09' BC Classic 2nd behind Zenyatta, and two back to back very respectable run's in the Dubai World Cup on their tapeta surface at Meydan!! Gio Ponti's glory days are most likely behind him now!! But I don't think there's any question at all about the fact that he's been one of the most talented and classy thoroughbred's representing American racing throughout the whole of his career!! Call it a hunch? But I also picture Gio Ponti being successful when he goes off to the breeding shed as well!! JMO.

@BrianZipse, I'll be rooting for Gio Ponti at Keenland this weekend. Even though he hasn't won a race so far in 2011, he still hasn't really run a bad race all season. He's just had the misfortune of running into a cracking good horse from Ireland in Cape Blanco a couple of times this season. But there's certainly no shame in finishing 2nd to him. I think he'll likely have to overcome another talented horse from Ireland in Zoffany in this race. A stablemate of Cape Blanco. Talented though he is, I believe Gio Ponti's class will win out over Zoffany in this race, though. Because I personally don't rate Zoffany quite as highly among Ballydoyle horses as I did Cape Blanco!!

Get Stormy Blows Out for Shadwell Turf Mile

I'd very much like to see Gio Ponti notch a win under his belt this season. But I believe he's going to have beat another Aidan O'Brien trained horse from Ireland to do it? Zoffany, who is a stablemate to Cape Blanco, who's beaten Gio Ponti twice this season is coming over from Ireland for the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile. Very talented 3yr.old son of Dansili who was a G1 winner in Ireland as 2yr.old in 2010. He's finished 2nd in two European G1 races this season. He was beaten by 3/4 of length by Frankel at Ascot in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes, and he was beaten by a head in France in the G1 Prix Jean-Prat by another very talented 3yr.old Juddmonte colt, Mutual Trust. Zoffany has the distinction of being the horse that came closer than any other this season to beating Frankel. When Frankel was starting paddle at the end of the St James's Palace Stakes, and Zoffany flew home late to finish to within 3/4 of a length of Frankel. Which was a monster run, IMO. I believe Gio Ponti and Zoffany will be the 2 class horses in the Shadwell Turf Mile. But unlike against Cape Blanco, I feel like Gio Ponti has the ability to beat Zoffany in this race. TJMO.

Keeneland is rather special to me. It's where I got my start in the world of racing - back to the days of Princess Rooney, Life's Magic, Sefa's Beauty, before there was a Breeder's Cup. I used to look forward to both times of the yr. I liked the Fall meet because I knew Florida was right around the corner and I knew I was getting away from all the cold & snow but I loved the Spring meet because of all the fresh grass, the bright, sweet Forsythia blooms, and the hope & excitement of the Road to the Triple Crown.

Dance and Dance has run primarily in Mile Handicaps this season, most of them in the UK. His biggest effort all season was his 2nd place finish to Side Glance in the G3 Sovereign Stakes Salisbury. Frankly, Dance and Dance just isn't a G1 level turf miler. Should both of them run anywhere near their official marks? I think the Shadwell Turf Mile ultimately comes down to a 2-horse between Gio Ponti and Zoffany. TJMO.

Gio Ponti Wins Shadwell; What's Next?
Gio Ponti has been caught nearing the wire three times during a tough-luck campaign in 2010. The dual champion finally had enough of that, this time doing a little catching of his own. Cutting back to one mile for the first time all year, Gio Ponti niftily split horses in deep stretch under Ramon Do...

I think Gio Ponti is still a class colt. But what do you do with him in this year's Breeders Cup? I believe turf is his best surface. But I also believe 10 furlongs is his best distance. Unfortunately for Gio Ponti, there is no 10 furlong turf even at the Breeders Cup. Only the 10 furlongs of the Classic on conventional dirt. Gio Ponti has always been vulnerable to defeat on turf at 12 furlongs. With European horses like Epsom Derby and Arc De Triomphe winner, Workforce. And Tattersalls Gold Cup and Coronation Cup winner, Fame and Glory both very possible entries into this year's B.C. Turf. You have to ask yourself if your Gio Ponti's connections if he's capable of running against these types of horses. That are multiple G1 winners on turf at 12 furlongs, and regularly thrive at that distance. That leaves Gio Ponti as a possible B.C. Mile-Turf entry. He's won G1 races over a mile on turf throughout his career. But does Gio Ponti have the kind of turn of foot necessary to run with the likes of Goldikova, Paco Boy, Canford Cliffs, or Rip Van Winkle at a mile on turf? I personally think Gio Ponti may be one of those horses that can run well on any surface. If I thought for one minute that Gio Ponti would handle conventional dirt as well as he did synthetics in the 2009 Classic? I wouldn't hesitate racing him again in the 2010 Classic.

Gio Ponti ran a nice race but was not the most impressive turf mile winner at Keeneland on Saturday. Proviso ran a bit faster and finished strong in her G1 First Lady triumph. She beat Grade 1 males at Santa Anita earlier this year. As for Gio Ponti, I agree that ten furlongs is his best distance and I would try the BC Classic. All it takes is a bad draw and his Mile hopes would be dashed.

Tough spot for this horse, but I think he has a better shot at the BC Mile. Turf is his best surface and he's probably the #3 ranked tuf miler right now, behind Goldikova and Proviso. So, with racing luck, he stands a chance in the BC Mile. But, for the BC Classic, he's definately an outsider. He couldn't beat Z last year in the Classic on polytrack; so what chance does he have on dirt against Z and a much stronger field of males than last year's Classic. All of Z, QR, Blame, LAL, and Haynesfield ave better shots in the Classic that Gio Ponti.

Gio Ponti is kind of in a tough spot in this year's Breeders Cup races. Turf is definitely his best surface. But unfortunately for Gio Ponti, 10 furlongs has always been his best distance. The Breeders Cup event doesn't have a 10 furlong turf race for him to go to. He's always been vulnerable to defeat at 12 furlongs. With the likes of Workforce and Fame and Glory possibly headed to America from Europe for the Breeders Cup Turf. That race would difficult at best for Gio Ponti to try to win. He's won over a mile in his career on turf. In the Frank E. Kilroe Mile. But there again, he's never raced at a mile on turf against the kind of speed that will likely be coming from Europe for the Breeders Cup Mile-Turf. I think Gio Ponti may potentially be one of those rare horses that has the ability to race over turf, synthetics, and conventional dirt. I think he's at his best on turf. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Gio Ponti pop up and run well on conventional dirt. The same way he ran well on synthetics in the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic. I don't think he can beat the Euro horses at 12 furlongs on turf, or the Euro horses at a mile on turf. If I was Gio Ponti's connections. I'd take my chances that he'll respond to conventional dirt. Knowing that 10 furlongs is his best trip. And hope for a big run out of him in the Breeders Cup Classic again. If not the Classic, then let him try the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile. The competition level of the Dirt Mile will be much easier than the competition level of the turf mile. JMO.

Someone mentioned to consider Gio Ponti for the B.C. Mile-Turf. You've got Goldikova, Paco Boy, and English 2000 Guineas winner, Makfi, already coming from Europe for that race. Goldikova and Paco Boy had a real duel in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot back in June. A race that Goldikova just did hang on to win. Then, surprisingly, Makfi beat them both at Deauville in the Prix Jacques La Marious. At 10 furlongs, or even 9, I would think Gio Ponti would have a chance in the B.C. Mile-Turf. But Gio Ponti is more of grinder than a horse with a sparkling quick turn of foot. IMO. America does have a colt that is hopefully still going forward for the B.C. Mile-Turf. Sidney's Candy, after the performance he threw up in the La Jolla Handicap over 8-1/2 furlongs. Setting a new Del-Mar turf course record for that distance, in his only career start on turf. He destroyed the La Jolla Handicap field. If he breaks the same way, and bolts out to a big lead in the Turf Mile? Goldikova, Paco Boy, and Makfi will all be scratching their head's. But for Gio Ponti. It's either take a chance at 10 furlongs on the dirt in the Classic? Or likely be beaten at 12 furlongs by the Euro horses in the B.C. Turf at 12 furlongs. JMO.

I meant to say Gio Ponti would have a shot at beating Goldikova, Paco Boy, or Makfi if the B.C. Mile-Turf were a 9 or 10 furlong race and not just a mile. My comments didn't come out correctly in my above statement.

Good points, Medlocke. The Euro's sent their C team to the Arlington Million and took two of the three top spots. Imagine what Gio will be up against in the BC Mile. As for Sidney's Candy, there are likely to be quality speed challengers and that CD turf course will be long and deep come BC time. Very different surface from the putting green at Del Mar
