  • Stagedoorjohnny · animalkingdom137 - to put it in a different perspective Steve Haskins has Hoppetunity as his second choice for the Derby and both Watchmaker and Priman of the Daily Racing Form has Hoppertunity third and all give the horse kudos for losing by only five and a quarter lengths to California Chrome whom the jockey won ridden out. Just that analysis from those handicappers tells volumes. · 2 days ago ·

  • amdaman · I wonder if California Crome has peaked too soon for the KD. Hoppertunity wasn't being asked for much in the stretch either. I like better his racing style for the KD. Maybe an exacta box with Wicked Strong would be a good bet. I don't think Candy Boy is at his best when he's too close to the lead. · 12 days ago ·

  • kdw1964 · I am perfectly aware of the difference between the inherent speeds of different race tracks AND the day to day or even race to race variance on the same surface . I made my own speed figures and track to track differentials many years ago. Certainly unadjusted times are no more than rough guides. But take the 1.79 seconds difference between the Wood and S.A. Derby times CC's rate of 52.84 fps for his final furlong and you have 94 feet 7 inches, give or take an inch. Divide that by 8 feet per length ( if you don't think a length is 8 feet, read a quarter horse book ), and you have 11.8 lengths. The Aqueduct MAIN track is not that much slower than S.A. The INNER DIRT at the big "A" is . And besides all that, whre is that good closer ? Wickedly Strong looked like he was about to collapse right after the wire in THe Wood. CC galloped out easily and loooked like he could run 9 more furlongs. Horses that win big races are rarely closers, Zenyatta excepted. Horses who do well in big races have the speed an athleticism to obtain position and the ability to kick clear. · 13 days ago ·

  • tmallios1 · As i have stated for a while,i think California Chrome is far and away the best 3 yo around. I can understand as to why others do not accept that. In the S.A. Derby i have no clue if he will win or not. Not because he is not good enough,or can't get the OH SO SCARY 9 Furlongs. I feel this way because a logical trainer will not have this as a target race on his dance card, but just a stepping stone. I am hopping that Sherman knows the meaning of the word logical. My post is to all the critics.I know if he loses the chest thumping will begin, the I Told you so will run rampant. Fair enough, you will get your 15 minutes of fame. But for the small chance that CC dominate this field and win off by daylight. What will be the excuse>Was it the predictable and anticipated juiced up track? Or will we go to Plan B and state it is only 9 Furlongs and not The even SCARRIER 10 Furlongs. · 16 days ago ·

  • shackleford · @gojro9 - an alternative explanation could be that Chrome has beat up on a weak group, Candy is a closer on a speed favoring track (thus not trouncing his weaker competition), and Hoppertunity has had to battle because he's facing better competition. We won't know the answer until (at least) after the Derby. · 16 days ago ·
