What the Nation is saying about the San Felipe...

Don’t I ever learn? Has watching racing for the past forty years taught me nothing? Shouldn’t it be clear by now that in racing, anything can happen? I’ll leave all those probing personal questions to be overanalyzed at some future time. For now, I will just tell you that Goldencents will not win th...Read More

  • cab2536 · The concern that Verrazano did not race as 2-y.o. is so inconsequential that it is laughable. So if had run 1 day sooner than he did, nobody would bring it up -- it's so silly. Times are different for the "modern" racehorse, horses are winning Derbies with 4 starts, having never run on conventional dirt, etc. These days it hardly matters -- tack 'em all up and send 'em out and the strongest, fastest one will generally find the wire first even if they may be a bot short on stamina. Verrazano has as good a shot at winning the Derby as any horse on the trail right now. · 65 days ago ·

Once upon a time there was a lightly raced three-year-old trained by Bob Baffert who may have been just a little too keyed up early on for his own good. In between horses heading to the clubhouse turn, the gray stakes winner undoubtedly felt the pressure, and at that point in his young career, did n...Read More

  • charliep · The San Felipe is not at all a good indicator of success in the kentucky Derby. In the last 25 years, only 2 winners have won the Derby, those being Sunday Silence (who won the Santa Anita Derby) and Fusiachi Pegausus (who won the Wood). We're talking about a Grade 1 champioship race versus a couple of Grade 2 races, one of which (Tampa Derby) should be a Grade 3. · 73 days ago ·

  • travel_vic · AIR is beautiful but it usually takes 36 hours or more to dry out. You see the surface not the softness below. Fast tracks, on the whole, don't drain that effectively when wet...They have a great thing at Anita in these little plastic strips in the dirt that take up moisture so it does not float on top....Great addition where it rains a lot. Same technology is at Hastings. · 75 days ago ·
