What the Nation is saying about the Rebel Stakes...

Shortly after D. Wayne Lukas won his first Kentucky Derby with the filly Winning Colors back in 1988, Restless Heart had a top 5 hit on the country music chart called Big Dreams in a Small Town. The lyrics began as follows… “Big dreams in a small town, eighteen and glory bound. Nothing here to tie u...Read More

  • CauseForConcern · Brian, when you say Thunder Gulch was his best Derby horse, it sure would've been nice to have a piece of that 25-1 best horse. Timber Country, I think, was his, and was the favorite of the Derby? Also, I don't believe any other trainer has had the distinction of running 1st AND 3rd, three times in Derby(Thunder Gulch & Timber Country; Grindstone & Prince Of Thieves; Charismatic & Cat Thief). · 62 days ago ·

  • cab2536 · The concern that Verrazano did not race as 2-y.o. is so inconsequential that it is laughable. So if had run 1 day sooner than he did, nobody would bring it up -- it's so silly. Times are different for the "modern" racehorse, horses are winning Derbies with 4 starts, having never run on conventional dirt, etc. These days it hardly matters -- tack 'em all up and send 'em out and the strongest, fastest one will generally find the wire first even if they may be a bot short on stamina. Verrazano has as good a shot at winning the Derby as any horse on the trail right now. · 62 days ago ·
