What the Nation is saying about the Queen Anne Stakes...

A basic unknown to the casual American race fan, other than possibly as the horse who won Animal Kindgdom’s final career start, Declaration of War is coming to Santa Anita to run the final race of his own career in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. So just who is this horse that has given his connections r...Read More

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Declaration of War is a very classy horse that's all business once he's out on the track. This will obviously be his first time ever racing on conventional dirt, but War Front offspring has burning up all 3 surfaces in America and abroad. Plus, last season Declaration of War won the G3 Diamond Stakes over 10-1/2f on Dundalk's synthetic track in Ireland, which I've been told probably plays as close to being like conventional dirt as any synthetic track in Europe. The distance or the class isn't an issue at all with this horse. The only question that has to be answered is how he'll handle the switch to dirt? I don't know if Declaration of War will prove good enough to win the BC Classic or not? But I do think he gives Coolmore the best chance they've had of winning the race since Giant's Causeway in 2000 where the race has been held on conventional dirt and not synthetics. · 178 days ago ·

  • AmbitiousD · Question for everyone. How does the horse know when to switch leads on a straight course? I see this as being tricky for Johnny V when the horse's typical que to change is entering or coming out of turns. I'm sure Mr. Motion will have AK ready for this, but the topic certainly has my curiosity. · 317 days ago ·

I feel it is highly likely that Farhh will scratch out of this contest and aim for the Prince of Wales' Stakes. It'd be very silly for Sheikh Mohammed to run both. • medlocke · I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say that we witnessed a changing of the guard at Royal-Ascot at the end of this year's Queen Anne Stakes? But I would go so far as to say that Goldikova has finally met in Canford Cliffs a turf miler who's turn of foot is every bit equal, if not quicker than Goldikova's. It's no accident that Canford Cliffs has now won 5 straight major G1's over a mile on the turf in Europe. All last season, Canford Cliffs trainer, Richard Hannon, kept running Paco Boy and Dick Turpin at Goldikova, and she always proved to be a half length to a length better than both every time. That's just no longer the case with her facing Canford Cliffs, IMO. Canford Cliffs is a very legitimate threat to dethroning Goldikova in her bid to win a 4th B.C. Mile. TJMO. · 1037 days ago ·

  • Rossington · I don't believe very many people saw past the "big 2", Canford Cliffs and Goldikova, finishing 1-2 in this race, one way or another? But I would imagine that trainer Roger Charlton and Prince Khalid Abdullah would have to be ecstatic about the way that Cityscape ran in this race. He really laid down a late challenge, and briefly looked like he might really hit the wire with Canford Cliffs and Goldikova. But it was still a career best for Cityscape. Beaten 1-3/4 lengths by Canford Cliffs, and 1 length by Goldikova. Cityscape ended the 2010 season with win's in the listed Superior Mile at Haydock, and the G3 Joel Stakes at Newmarket. Then made his seasonal debut at Sandown, where he was beaten by 2-1/4 lengths by Dick Turpin in the G2 Bet365 Mile. Most people had Cityscape figured to finish behind Cape Blanco, Rio De La Plata, and some figured even behind Ransom Note also. I think this race will give Cityscape a huge dose of confidence, and I don't doubt Charlton looking for a strong G2 or another G1 over a mile for Cityscape to contest in the very near future!! • medlocke · I know that Ballydoyle has a ton of middle distance talent in the barn for the 2011 season. The likes of So You Think, St Nicholas Abbey, Cape Blanco, Await The Dawn, Fame and Glory, and Jan Vermeer. And that's just their older horses. I'm sure it's hard to find black type, G1 stakes races for all of them, and keep them separated from racing each other along the way? But I wonder if Aidan O'Brien isn't treating Cape Blanco almost as an afterthought? Because I'm not sure what this horse has ever done to warrant being thrown into the Queen Anne Stakes field against Goldikova and Canford Cliffs both, over a mile? He won the G2 Dante Stakes and G1 Irish Champion Stakes over 10f for Ballydoyle in 2010. He also won the G1 Irish Derby, and ran 2nd in the G1 King George over 12f for Ballydoyle in 2010. Cape Blanco's obviously a much better middle distance horse, and he get's rewarded by having to face Goldikova and Canford Cliffs at Ascot over a mile? Come on Aidan O'Brien?? Cape Blanco deserves more respect than that? It looks almost like you're just throwing him to the wolves here, because you can't figure out what middle distance G1 race to send him to? IMO. · 1044 days ago ·

  • medlocke · Definitely want to see her win the Breeders Cup Mile again this year if that's what determines whether or not she goes to Sha Tin for the Hong Kong Mile? I've wanted to see Goldikova race in the Hong Kong Mile for the past 3 season's. Her 2011 debut is likely to be at Royal-Ascot in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes again. A race that many analyst are very eager to see, because it could be the first time that Goldikova will face the Richard Hannon's great miler, the 4yr.old Canford Cliffs. In 2010, Canford Cliffs won the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes, and the G1 Sussex Stakes. But he never encountered Goldikova throughout the season because he's stable mates with both Paco Boy and Dick Turpin. Paco Boy faced Goldikova multiple times in 2010, and Dick Turpin finished 3rd behind Goldikova and Paco Boy in the G1 Prix De La Foret. But Hannon has consistently stated that he believes Canford Cliffs to be the best of the three. · 1122 days ago ·
