Champion 2-year-old Hansen and Union Rags, separated by a head in a thrilling 1-2 finish in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (Grade I), and unbeaten Algorithms, who stepped into the spotlight with a five-length win over the champion in the Holy Bull (GIII) at Gulfstream Park, top a large roster...Read More

The memory is still vivid in our minds from May 20, 2006, when Barbaro’s right hind leg flared out awkwardly as Edgar Prado dismounted to steady the ailing horse with a look of panic. The debate began promptly at that moment. Read More

  • cugel the clever · @icy: I'm curious about your opinion of Animal Kingdom winning the Eclipse. Based on your opinion that classic winners Barbaro, Kaui King, etc didn't show their true potential due to career-ending injuries and "should not be rated at all as they proved nothing", how could AK be the 3yo champ by proving nothing? · 19 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · Winplacsho, I have to disagree. The Travers has more prestige and hold more value in the year end votes than either the Preakness or the Belmont. People favor it because it's Classic distance of 10f, a distance Shackleford never won at. Also, while Shackleford is a gutsy and admirable horse, he did not "take his show on the road." He has two wins this year, on in allowance company, the other in the Preakness, and he never could return to that winning form. He was well beaten in his last three races, as he was in the FOY, The Derby, and Belmont. He was at every dance, but like First Dude last year, there are two many beats to be a champion. Caleb excelled mainly at Saratoga, however his big win at Churchill demonstrates he is probably not just a Saratoga freak. Based on merits, it's Caleb's award. However, if the stigma comes out, and he should not receive the award, Stay Thirst did the most of the Classic runners. · 50 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · And many of you need one in reality. What i said is completely true. If you want to be technical, over 90 of horses in this sport are not clean, but are because of what is made legal. Winstrol was at the time, so even it showed up in Curlin's blood, it would have been fine. I also provided you with facts above that say that that particular drug does not produce much weight gain or muscle gain, unlike typical steroids. That particular drug is actually used to treat conditions that cause swelling, and it reduces it. Swelling typically comes from when blood flows highly to one area of the body causing it to swell and become stiff and painful. If it reduces swelling then this drug would be an equivalent to aprin or motrin to humans. · 101 days ago ·

  • 12 Clip · Good article Laura. The transformation of First Dude from a front-runner to a closer has been quite a transformation for the son of Stephen Got Even. His new style is so much better suited for his body-type. The Dude is a big colt that hits the ground hard. The way he closed in the Gold Cup reminded me of how Curlin use to grind them down. A winner of three in-a-row, it now seems like The Dude has no problem taking pictures in the winners circle. I think his style is perfect for Churchill Downs and the classic distance. And remember he was in the race last year as a three-year-old against one of the best fields ever assembled. This year I can visualize him getting a similar trip to the one Blame got in the Classic. There's still alot of racing til then, and Baffert needs to figure out what his next race will be. Although the Pacific Classic looks like the most likely spot. I'm not so sure if First Dude will be able to grip and dig as well on Del Mar's poly-track. He is 3 for 3 in the money lifetime on synthetic tracks, so with him I think the surface probably doesn't matter, but nonetheless it is Del Mar · 212 days ago ·

I first saw her at Belmont in the Mother Goose, and from there on I was hooked on this champion. I tried to attend every race she entered in the East, the Lady's Secret at Monmouth, the Woodward at Saratoga, and what was to be her final competition at the Spa, the Personal Ensign. I loved this horse so much I was willing to travel almost any distance to see her. No human could make me do that, except maybe the Pope.
