What the Nation is saying about the Pennsylvania Derby...

To Honor and Serve put on a quite the display, November 26, 2011, when he rolled clear of the classy Calibrachoa. The son of Bernardini has been a puzzling this season, to say the least. After his two year old season, he had built up such a reputation that he was made the favorite of the Fountain of...Read More

  • CauseForConcern · As for the rain forecast, Ruler On Ice does have the experience, but, THAS has never been over a sloppy oval. His sire has produced 30% mud winners, which is a very high percentage. So, therefore, despite the fact that he's never seen a sloppy track, I believe he might be there, based on his sire's mudder% winners. Let the race begin!!!! · 252 days ago ·

Spearfish was them claimed and disappeared forever. We eventually heard what happened. It is sad that there are a few trainers that don't care about the condition of their horses. I really do believe that those types are the exceptions in racing and that most trainers do care about their horses. · 252 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · I do not think this field is weak at all. You have the Travers runner up and third place finisher and the Belmont winner, just off the top of my head. Plus the surface can be a little bit quirky at times. If THAS is the type of horse that can't go eye to eye with top horses he will run third to horses that may not be nearly as talented. From what i have seen this year he won't go by a horse if they fight back and they are abreast eachother. · 252 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · It could go either way still, IMO. Personally I would have loved to see him in the Sprint. The Mile is good, but still does not seem to hold the prestige that the Classic or Sprint does. If the connections do opt for the Classic I would not count him out. He is that talented and proffesional. He showed he could rate last out, that he doesn't need to be right up on the pace all the time and that will help him a great deal. Those who harp on his breed only have Indian Charlie as their primary argument, even though Mo has Arch as a grandsire, who goes back to Kris S, who was also in the pedigree of Zenyatta and Rock Hard Ten. Blame had Arch for a sire and could get 10f very well. Indian Charlie may not be the best distance sire, but his foals can typically get up to 8.5f on average and he has on occasion had a good distance runner, Fleet Indian being one. So there is stamina there. · 264 days ago ·

  • cugel the clever · humphrey - you are an arrogant old dinosaur. stop patronizing and insulting people who are trying to imprpove the mess that you and your generation made of the beautiful sport of horse racing. of course the writer knows that each track functions indpendently. he is making the point that for the survival of the sport, tracks need to think more strategically and plan their stakes programs to maximize the interest in each track and stakes race. it's a perfectly sensible idea and essential in an age when there is increasing competition for the sports fans' attention and dollars. "ALWAYS have" is true. "ALWAYS will" is a stupid and regressive opinion. · 602 days ago ·

  • humphrey · Johann Wolfgang von Goethe knew about things when he stated "there is nothing more frightful than ignoirnace in action." The Jockey Club has does and will probably forever rule racing with an iron hand. When you are the only legal game in town you develop disdain for you customer as a take it or leave it situation as they have shown repeatedly. It wasn't unitl after a class actio suit by the Jockey's Guild after WWII that jocks licenses were pried out of their hands. Jim Squires referes to these autorcratic atherosclerotic rigid individuals as the "Dinnies" in response to Dinnie Phipps and outlines in his book, Headless Horsemen, how they are adrift with no ideas to solidify the game. When Gaines came up with the idea of the Breeder's Cup it was rejected until THEY put their name on it as ???co authors, so when you begin to try to see why the game is in the state it is in today,. READ a little history first. HANA (Horseplayer's Association of North America) is trying to use some boycotting force to change things, but I would not hold my breath.
