This past weekend, the 2014 Kentucky Derby Trail really started to heat up with The Lecomte at the Fair Grounds and The Smarty Jones over at Oaklawn. Here’s my take on what to make of these events moving forward.Read More

  • CauseForConcern · When you mention the Smarty Jones(and Lecomte), not much credence would be put into this race as a prep race, but Oxbow and Will Take Charge emerged in the big showcase later on. Curious to see if anyone develops out of either of these races? Nevertheless, nice angle on your analysis. · 165 days ago ·

The Grade 3 Lecomte at the Fairgrounds in New Orleans features a field of nine Kentucky Derby hopefuls vying for the first Derby Points being offered this year down on the bayou. • CauseForConcern · I tend to like Got Shades, with Albarado. This is the second entrant of trainer Pish. Not sure if one is in the race to set up for the other. I wonder if any horsemen would shy away from going the Fair Grounds route, when Grindstone in 1996 and the next nearest Louisiana Derby winner being Black Gold in 1924, because of the lack of Ky Derby success that had followed? · 174 days ago ·
  • two4nine · I'll take Vicar's in Trouble. A Maker-trained, Ramsey-owned colt with Rosie up. Big speed, a jump in class, and first route, but I think he'll simply be faster than the rest. · 173 days ago ·
Unfortunately I will be unable to attend the Lecomte this year :( I'm saddened over this.

I love the Louisiana Derby. It may not hold the ultimate importance towards the Kentucky Derby as the Wood, or Florida, Arkansas and Santa Anita Derbies historically, but what it lacks for in Kentucky Derby winners, it makes up for in other ways. Not only has the race attracted solid, deep fields in...Read More

  • buckpasser · I have always thought Secretariat was quite a good sire and as Rafi says an even better broodmare sire with Storm Cat among others. In all fairness to Secretariat as a sire, given the level of mares that went to him, he would have had to sire at least one TC winner and many other classic winners to live up to the type of mares he got. In many respects, this will be Frankel's issue to deal with-- given that the mares he is being bred to are the creme de la creme of racing. · 468 days ago ·
  • rafirox · Good points, Buckpasser. I believe we, the general public, just put him on much to high a petistool, and he would never exceed our unrealistic excpectations. Risen Star had all the talent in the world, he could have won the Triple Crown. Lady's Secret was a fine mare. As a broodmare sire I don't even have to repeat. You, and everybody, knows what he did as a broodmare stallion. Good post, Buckpasser "Like".. · 467 days ago ·
