What the Nation is saying about the La Canada...

Sent from the gate, 6-5 favorite Broken Sword set a fast early pace, setting up the late run of 16-1 longshot Spellbound, who was dead last, 17 lengths off the lead in a field of seven past the half mile pole and rallied four-wide at the quarter to get up and win Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 La Canad...Read More

  • Mary Z. · About Broken Sword, just in looking at her record, there was a long gap between her first two starts, so maybe there was a very good reason to bring her back "slowly" with the result that she kicked ass at BHP, in the Bayakoa, which I don't know how many times I read post by others saying how it plays closest to dirt of the synthetic tracks. So much for the ducking. You can go to the source to find out about any decisions, but why should they be explained? Or just make stuff up. Another thing is, she runs quite nicely on turf, so I would call her versatile. · 95 days ago ·

  • icyhotboo · BHP, for myself at least I handicap it as a dirt surface and lose nothing in doing so as compared to other synthetic surfaces where I just don't bother as I do poorly. The exception to that would be Tapeta which I have no trouble with. That brings up something I've wondered about for a long time. The old synthetic at Santa Anita played just like turf as history shows both by race shape and horses who did well there. I'm curious why they never gave Zenyatta a chance on the turf. · 95 days ago ·

Were those fractions run upside down?

  • travel_vic · On the dirt, I have seen exactly TWO horses that sped up rather than slow down and BOTH in the Kentucky Derby: Rumbo and Secretariat....On the lawn it happens all the time, the greatest of which, recently, was Court Vision, a horse than ran final fractions almost on par with sprinters first fraction...One for the books..Also realize that pace times are a conglomerate NOT individual horses. · 455 days ago ·
