What the Nation is saying about the Japan Cup...

Gentildonna is a superbly talented three-year-old filly, and with the victory she became the first sophomore female ever to win the Cup, but the decision seem less than just. Simply stated, Orfevre deserved to win the race, just as Buena Vista did two years ago. Perhaps the four-year-old son of Stay...Read More

  • On The Gallop's · All nonsense. If they felt Orfevre would beat Gentildonna they would run him in the Sheema Classic. · 136 days ago ·

  • On The Gallop's · Mike is 1000% correct. Orfevre did not run a straight line and the Filly simply muscled her way through. But hey you all above complaining can just simply not watch the race then :) · 136 days ago ·

  • mkstorm · Still think Orfevre is the horse to beat in JC. Don't agree with the naysayers that this horse tired in the Arc. This horse has already proven that he can win at longer distances. I think his Arc loss was just a matter of the horse just letting up thinking the race was over. Can't really blame his French jockey who was urging him all the the way to the wire. Orfevre seems to be his own worst enemy. · 183 days ago ·

Since some thought she hadn't done it right the first time, Buena Vista did it once again. And this time it was for keeps. On Sunday, Nov. 27 at Tokyo Racecourse, second pick Buena Vista fought a close battle in the stretch with sixth choice Tosen Jordan, then pulled ahead 100 meters out to top the ...Read More

  • footlick · I thought it was nice to see her win also. Too bad the pace was slow and Danedream couldn't get better position early. I read she ran her last 6 furlongs in 1:08.8, but because of her draw and being farther off the pace than they wanted, she had too much to do. But Bravo! to Buena Vista! · 545 days ago ·

  • mkstorm · I've been following Buena Vista for the last four years and was so glad to see her win the Japan Cup. It was so deserving after last year's disqualification and this year's tough losses where it took track and stakes records to beat her. I still can't believe she went off in the JC at 5-1 here in the States?! Looking forward to her to taking on the Japan Triple Crown winner in the Arima Kinen, one of the biggest races of the year that nobody is talking about?! I'm a big fan of Buena Vista and will miss watching her run. · 532 days ago ·

Picking ZATT's Star of the Week 52 times a year can be a mixed bag. Sometimes it is easy, with one horse dominating in such a way that I do not give the decision a second thought. In some weeks, it comes down to a pair of performances in which I need to make a difficult decision that is likely to be...Read More

Karma baby ... Buena Vista wins the Japan Cup!
  • yukichan · I watched this race again as I was interested in the rather athletic way Iwata rode her in the last 400 yards--Iwata did not use, did not bring, a whip. · 545 days ago ·

  • shores · I would say the odds are reasonably high, I mean, with a field as big as that, It could happen. It's like in the Kentucky Derby, the best horse often doesn't do that well due to field size, post position, etc. But I think in the Japan Cup, these two will be right there in the end... at least I hope they will..... · 546 days ago ·

In a scene that has been played out on three continents over the past three years, Vodka, Japan’s reigning Horse of the Year, had the fans at Tokyo Race Course cheering wildly as she barely held on to win the Nov. 29 Japan Cup, joining other recent femme fatales Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Rags to R...Read More
  • Medlocke · Speaking of talented mare's, here's another old 5yr.old mare that's taken it to the boy's more than once in her career. In what turned out to be a very close photo finish, Vodka really dug in to hold on in the stretch and win the Japan Cup. She alway's fight's on tough. She's sort of the Japanese version of Europe's Goldikova. The last time I had seen Vodka race, she faded in the stretch in the Dubai Duty Free trying to run down Gladiatorus. But like a true champion, she's come back and redeemed herself. · 1273 days ago ·

  • Rossington · When I saw Vodka run and fade in the stretch trying to catch Gladiatorus earlier in the year in the Dubai Duty Free, I thought that maybe the old champion mare may have reached her limit. But being the champion she is, she show's up big again winning the Japan Cup. I was kind of surprised that Conduit finished out of the money, but his jockey commented that he may have been a bit fatigued after racing in the Breeders Cup Turf, then shipping to Japan for this race. But he still managed a very respectable 4th place finish in the Japan Cup. · 1273 days ago ·
