What the Nation is saying about the Illinois Derby...

There’s a lot of local hopes for a Blackhawks double on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Chicago Blackhawks will be facing off against the St. Louis Blues in game 2 of their first round playoff series. Later in the afternoon, a horse with Blackhawks ties will take to the track as Graded S...Read More
Today’s column is not about shortcomings of the 2014 Kentucky Derby point system. Nor is about the exclusion of the Illinois Derby as a points race for the Run for the Roses. Rather it is all about looking forward to the Preakness. Racing’s Middle Jewel could be the direct beneficiary of some high p...Read More

Many may remember when Fordubai made his stakes debut in last spring’s Illinois Derby. He was all but ignored at the windows, and was sent off at odds of 23-1 in the field of 14, despite coming off a win over the track at Hawthorne. He ran much better than his odds that day, finishing second to the...Read More

If you’ve been waiting for the promising young horse, Departing, to make it back to the races, your wait is just about over. But It's ORB by 1, Ork by 2, ORB on his way to Belmont --we have a CONTENDER for the TRIPLE CROWN. Full disclosure, as a track coach I preach visualization. · 336 days ago ·

There was no getting around the favorites in yesterdays features at Hawthorne. I could not find much of a way around Departing in the feature and neither could the betting public. Have you ever looked at a trainer or an owner and just thought, “wow, what a whiner, what a baby. Just shut up and do what is best for your horse?” Right now, I’m looking at several who are moaning and whining about the new Derby Points system and thinking that exact quote.Read More

  • streetsensefan · Really Laura? The point system is flawed. Think about this, 2 yr old BC champion may not qualify, no points for the Illinois Derby, I remeber War Emblem, an Illinois Derby winner , wiring the field to win the kentucky derby, Mine that Bird would not have qualified in 2009 based on this point system. As the next few months unfold, there will be heartbreak stories of good horses missing the derby. I already see on two of the three favorites in the Florida derby getting to the derby. The new players at Churchill have no concept of how to run a racetrack. Look a the number of nominations this year for Derby, all time low, proably becasue Don Richardson isn't there anymore. Laura, don't kid yourself that this is a good system.... · 395 days ago ·
  • AmbitiousD · Streetsensefan, I dont think it is completely valid to say those horses you mentioned would not have qualified. If the points system existed during those years, the trainers would have likely taken alternative paths to get their mounts into the race. The point system may not be perfect, but it emphasizes horses being at top form during the right time of year. To me the best potential long term effect of the points system will do is alter the mindset of breeders to try and breed horses to run 68 second 6 furlong races as two year olds and shift to try and breed 120 second 10 furlong horses as 3 year olds. · 395 days ago ·
No ADW? No problem! Hawthorne is ready to run. Hawthorne's spring meet opens this Friday, February 15th and runs through Sunday, April 28th. • gelded1 · I'm from Illinois and nothing the legislators do or don't do rather doesn't suprise me 1 bit. This state is hurting for cash and they let the agreement expire . They are costing themselves and this state big bucks at a time when we need it most.I think they are focused on the poker and gambling machines they are installing in the bars and other places to get their share of tax money.I hope they reach an agreement and re-up it for us horse players. It's very costly to drive to the OTB's and tracks daily if they are very far away with the price of fuel on the rise . · 430 days ago ·

  • northport · They need to be allocating this ridiculous purse money in three year old races to races for older horses. With stud fees beckoning and a sharp decline in purses as an older horse, it's no shock that so many nice ones don't bother staying around once they hit 4 · 442 days ago ·
  • Buckpasser · Jeff Gural is instituting special races with higher purses for older horses at the Meadowlands and it has worked. But in order to keep more horses racing, you need to prevent three or four yr old sires from having entries in the triple crown races. Gural has done this for the Hambletonian and then increased purses for older horses. In my opinion, you need to do both to have an impact. · 442 days ago ·

For the first time since 1986 Churchill Downs has elected to overhaul the Kentucky Derby qualification system in favor of a 4-tiered points system. • buckpasser · Dani. To me the Breeders Cup is important to American Awards, but the fact that top tier European horses do not come here because winning the Breeders Cup does not enhance their stud value. I think that by lessening the Juveniles impact on the Derby trail, you will see a shift towards the three yr old season. There is no win and you're in for the Juvenile and all it will become is a quick pay day. Nothing to knock, but not of the same significance. To me a lot of the purpose of a world wide championship seems to be lost each year. INMO the breeders cup is not what it was supposed to be. It was to move around to other tracks in NA, which now it seems to alternate between two tracks with Stronach wanting to have it permanently at Santa Anita. The BC is just not what it was set up to be in my opinion and I think this new system will change the juvenile races too. · 577 days ago ·

WAR Emblem in 2002 won both the Illinois Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Now CDI wants to exclude the Illinois Derby from the point system to qualify for the Kentucky Derby? Where is the sense in this? I stand by my other comments concerning CDI Stupidity!

Let’s face it, the Illinois Derby is not the strongest of preps for the Run for the Roses, but on the other hand, last time I checked it was still a Kentucky Derby prep. Not so according to the decision makers at Churchill Downs. Kind of odd for a race that I always enjoy attending and in the past d...Read More

  • Eclipse First · Looking like a better crop of three year-old colts than most we have seen of late, and potentially the best betting Derby in some time. I will be perfectly willing to let the odds dictate this one. If Gemologist is underlaid due to undefeated record and high-profile connections, will stay away; ditto Take Charge Indy w/ Borel up. Obviously we need to see who actually makes it to the gate--and post draw--but could envision as many as half a dozen legit contenders at playable odds on Derby day, including I'll Have Another, Went the Day Well, Daddy Longlegs, Alpha, Mark Valeski, and Wrote. And I see Genady Dorchenko plans to toss Hero of Order in the Bluegrass--what do you do if he runs another big one @ Keeneland? Should make for some whopping exotic payouts at this year's Derby! · 737 days ago ·
