Older Comments about the Illinois Derby...

Purse hiked. Called it. Upped to $750,000. Needs to be one million dollars. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/75915/purse-hiked-for-illinois-derby

  • northport · They need to be allocating this ridiculous purse money in three year old races to races for older horses. With stud fees beckoning and a sharp decline in purses as an older horse, it's no shock that so many nice ones don't bother staying around once they hit 4 · 1545 days ago
  • Buckpasser · Jeff Gural is instituting special races with higher purses for older horses at the Meadowlands and it has worked. But in order to keep more horses racing, you need to prevent three or four yr old sires from having entries in the triple crown races. Gural has done this for the Hambletonian and then increased purses for older horses. In my opinion, you need to do both to have an impact. · 1545 days ago
WAR Emblem in 2002 won both the Illinois Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Now CDI wants to exclude the Illinois Derby from the point system to qualify for the Kentucky Derby? Where is the sense in this? I stand by my other comments concerning CDI Stupidity!
