What the Nation is saying about the Holy Bull Stakes...

Unlike The Dark Horse, Chris Sorenson, who is taking the safe pick in Orb, I believe Itsmyluckyday has the ability to pull off a Kentucky Derby surprise.Read More

  • myntjulius · I think the interesting spin that this puts on the equation is that now the trainers who want to swoop in and win one of the big prep races, then on to the triple crown and retire with 7 races under their belt are over. Talented racers who are willing to contest 3 of 4 races prior to the triple crown may now earn their due. No more one hit wonders, but talented racers who are willing to compete against the best anytime, any placxe, anywhere. That is the right path to the next triple crown. · 139 days ago ·

  • equineplay · While the new system may not be the perfect way of determining who gets in, I will say that with proper planning a owner and trainer can form a stradegy that gains points early, as a two year old , and if sucessful as a two year old, pick a couple of races that can rest a early point earner prior to the derby. The last few 50 point races and all of the 100 point races are going to be big fields and very tough on the horses looking to get in. · 139 days ago ·

  • dani.pugh · Anne, not a fan of him for a couple reasons. One, his inconsistency. Two, he had all the momentum in the Juvenile, and especially after Bobby stopped he should have been able to blow by...he didn't. Three Only two Tapits have ever won a grade one at 10f, one of them was an older horse. Tapits seem to excel at 8/8.5f, but almost never beyond that. Tim, I want to see Fury Kapcori learn to not be so dead set on wanting the lead. Talented horse, but he always has to right in the thick of things, and more often than not, he will lose ground in the stretch for that reason. · 141 days ago ·

  • Mike in SB · I saw where both Shanghai Bobby and Itsmyluckyday are going to wait for the Florida Derby. It will be a good rematch but probably a much better field. Since both will need to hit the board to be sure of a place in the Derby lineup, it seems very possible one of them will not have enough points to make the Kentucky Derby field. · 142 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · Bobby could get third and probably still have enough points. Itsmyluckyday would need to win or place, though. I do not mind either staying with their original plan, though I would like to see Bobby run back in the FOY w/o blinkers. I think that may help with his loafing on the lead, once he establishes a clear one. He is a horse that responds well to competition, with blinkers he cannot see the horse if they are slightly behind him nor even if they are abreast him. Take the blinkers off and he will be able to see them very clearly. · 142 days ago ·

great to see a fast time for a prep, hopefully they get a high beyer and it is a sign to come...
I'm going to take a stance against the two obvious choices :Shanghai Bobby and Bern Identity. The former is - in my opinion - a glorified sprinter who got away with a speed favoring surface and one who is very unlikely to develop into a serious KD contender. Bern Identity is more likely to benefit from the added distances but may not be sharp enough quite yet. That leaves Itsmyluckyday as the horse who is fit, one who can handle the distance and the one with a serious chance to upset the glorified sprinter. Good luck to all.

  • Lisa111 · dani.pugh, I am very glad that I took the time to read your posts today. It allowed me the chance to revisit the entire race with a different mindset. As most who are looking to beat the favorite for a payoff one still must make the best decision no matter what the payoff is offering. I dont like going into a race being "afraid" of any horse so I went back and forgot about Bobbys name and the fact that he is the favorite. He will be on my exotics. Thanks again for your posts. · 144 days ago ·

  • ruffianlover · I agree with dani. Bobby is similar to the Biscuit where he seems to enjoy a challenge. He seems to not like having a horse pass him. I think that he lost focus when on the lead and was not sure what to do now that he had the lead. As soon as he saw HHE come close to him- he was sort of like "Oh crap I have to run again- no way I let this guy pass me". He also showed he had that extra kick left in him when running very close to the flying pace with title contender at the begging of the race. Can this horse get the distance? Not sure yet. But is the Juvenile an accurate race to justify that he can't? No. · 144 days ago ·
