What the Nation is saying about the Fair Grounds Oaks...

With yesterday’s disappointing news that the most talented three-year-old filly in the nation, Princess Arabella, has been prematurely retired due to a soft tissue injury, in addition to the season-long absence of the undefeated juvenile filly champion, My Miss Aurelia, it would appear that this yea...Read More

Brereton Jones’s Believe You Can, with regular rider Rosie Napravnik aboard, looked like she would, then looked like she wouldn’t, but finally did win Saturday’s 45th running of the $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks, the 3-year-old filly counterpart to Sunday’s $1 million Louisiana Derby. Read More
With Inny Minnie running in Saturday’s $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks and Cigar Street one of 13 contenders for Sunday’s $1 million Louisiana Derby, it looks like Ballis and Lewis have learned a thing or two since buying their first thoroughbred in 2008. • Floridaf · You made very good points about Yara and Zo Impressive in regards to some of their previous races. Personally, I think Disposablepleasure is much better than her 4th place Davona Dale finish would suggest; just look back to her gritty win in the Demoiselle. I believe the match-up between Eden's Moon and Reneesgotzip will be the best of the weekend in the 3-yo filly division. Maybe we can get another BL/HDG rivalry going. Great analysis, Brian! · 61 days ago ·

  • BrianAppleton · Thanks Ashley! I agree with regard to Disposablepleasure. The Davona Dale was her first race of the year and I think she will benefit off that effort, but I don't think she'll get to the top two. All of these fillies are coming into the races looking really good. · 61 days ago ·

  • bornstar · I just finished handicapping this one and St. Johns is the best bet. Like you said the distance will suit her well and Plum Pretty and It's Tricky will probably get into a speed duel opening it up for her to make the late charge. · 285 days ago ·

  • zatt · I have been a big fan since Inglorious broke her maiden in a stakes race last fall, and I like her chances in the Woodbine Oaks tomorrow, but I must admit, it came up tough. Obviously Bear It's Time and Roxy Gap are strong fillies, but Marketing Mix looks especially intriguing to me. · 361 days ago ·

  • KyOaksRunner · @ajump08 - I agree, Summer Soiree was the most impressive filly of the weekend in terms of what she beat and how she beat them. The only thing I'm worried about with her is that she is always on the lead and fights to keep it, she doesn't seem to want to rate. · 428 days ago ·

  • zatt · Thanks for bringing attention to the ridiculous current rating of Inglorious (and Joyful Victory as well.) They both deserve to be up near the top as you have them. Mildly Offensive is impressive, but both were wet track sprints, so I am in the wait and see mode with her. · 435 days ago ·

  • KyOaksRunner · I was shocked she was so low and aside from the top 5 or so there are quite a few fillies underrated right now, like Pomeroy's Pistol at #48. I agree, Mildly Offensive was visually pretty striking with her move but I'm not convinced she will be able to get distance. She seemed extremely eager to get to the lead early. · 435 days ago ·
