This shows the Dubai World Cup has a tremendous following. Their viewership for the last 3 years combined topped 1 billion. Last year 300 million viewers watched the World cup. Now it is not comparable with the FiFa World cup, or the Beijing Olympics, but you can compare it to the Superbowl this year which was a record breaker at 111 million viewers. Pretty impressive, and good job to Dubai Racing TV.

  • Northport · Japan Cup garners plenty of international appeal - whether or not those international horses do as well as they used to is another story. The Japan Cup used to be an easy money grab for B list horses from Europe, USA, and Australasia, but in the last decade Japan's breeding and racing program speaks for itself (along with of course a hometown advantage). I was watching a short piece on the history of the Japan Cup, and those in the Japanese racing industry said that it was created to encourage Japanese breeders, owners, and trainers to be better. The Japanese made little impression on the international scene in the 1980s and 1990s, and having horses constantly coming in from foreign countries and take their biggest prize was a wake up call to start buying, breeding, selling, and racing better quality animals. Obviously they have done so, seeing as world class Japanese runners are on a winning streak and many foreign horses now rather stay home. That's not to say that it isn't an international race still - whether or not all of them are first class runners. Dunaden, Joshua Tree, Solemia, Jakkalberry, Sri Putra, Danedream, Shareta, Sarah Lynx, Cirrus Des Aigles, Dandino, Conduit, Ouija Board, Alkaased, Bago, Powerscourt, etc. Not all of the aforementioned are world beaters, but some are clearly first class European animals · 982 days ago

  • UnionRagsRules · Oh Sullivan... at this day in age ANY horse who sets foot on the track can easily be injured. It may be more of a case with Unbridled's Song but we all know who has been an iron horse this year. By this weekend it will 10 starts in 11 eleven months. He danced with them all the way through the TC. Pulled the blinkers, and he really showed up for the second half. In all his recent races (since pulling blinkers) he has been there at the end, always fighting at the finish. I don't think he really cares what is under his hooves either, unless it's muddy. Truth is, he's probably our best shot. · 1065 days ago

  • rafirox · Sorry. Haha, AoR. I do agree, all joking aside. If Royal Delta can break well and get away with 31 something I'll be happy. If she doesn't break fast, she'll be toasted. Really liking Hunter's Light as my win pick, and Kassiano as my longshot. · 1308 days ago

  • travel_vic · Another factor few consider is racing under lights. We used to have three nights per week and two day programs on the weekend. MANY horses could not run under lights, shadows freaked them. · 1312 days ago
