It seems to me pretty clear now that to be successful in Dubai a horse needs good turf and/or synthetic form and especially Tapeta form. icyhotboo · Going into this race, this was a proven multi surface horse. I handicapped him the same as I would have Wise Dan, except I added the extra quarter mile that he was proven at. I also added the fact this was the third race back after a comeback from an injury layoff. Even though he ran and lost against Wise Dan and POE, I considered those as I would prep races. In truth he made a believer out of me with that fantastic BC run. In my wildest dreams I never anticipated a run like that off a seven month injury layoff. I would love to see him run 3 more races this year if it were possible. He probably won't be rated as one of the great ones because he had an injury plagued career that only allowed 11 races, but in my mind he belongs with the best of them. · 46 days ago ·

Mike in SB · While he did have an injury plagued career, I think Animal Kingdom's 11 race career is also a reflection of the modern trend in racing which is to run the horse as few times as possible. After the Breeders Cup he could have run in a race like the Cigar Mile, instead they waited until Gulfstream and ran on the Turf as a prep for Dubai. It is hard to compare a horse with only two Grade/Group One wins with the great horses of the past, although personally I think he had as much talent as many of the great horses. I just wish he had had the chance to race more times. · 46 days ago ·

A real thing of beauty to watch, because anyone who's been following the carnival since it began in January knows that Animal Kingdom ran rough shod over several horses who've had a fantiastic 3 months in Dubai racing on tapeta themselves. By far the most impressive winner of the 4 Dubai World Cups that have been run at Meydan, and that's no knock at Gloria De Campeao, Victoire Pisa, or Monterosso in the least. Great to see America finally get on the board with a DWC win on thiis surface!! Well done indeed to trainer Graham Motion and his connections. I would love to see them take Animal Kingdom to Royal-Ascot in June to run in the G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at 10f on turf, but I can't say I'm that optimistic it will happen? · 50 days ago ·

ILuvTurfRacing · @racingtitbits, by the time Animal Kingdom could ever get around to locking horns with St Nicholas Abbey he'd likely have to be willing to step up to 14 to 16f to do it. Coolmore know that St Nicholas Abbey can run till the cows come home with that Montjeu pedigree, and they're looking to replace Fame and Glory as their Cup horse. Don't be surprised if later in the season you start seeing SNA in races like the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup, Doncaster Cup, Yorkshire Cup, Irish St. Leger, etc...He won the G3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester at just shy of 14f and it took Ryan Moore an age to pull SNA up at Chester that day after running 1-3/4 miles. · 49 days ago ·

On The Gallop's · St Nicholas Abbey has shown to run very well at Meydan, but when the competition gets stepped up on the grass during the summer english meets he seems to be a step behind. ILTR- You think this is their next Cup horse?. I think with the thinning of the older horses in Europe this year , that they would keep St.Nic in the middle distance races. No Frankel, No Nathaniel, No Danedream, No So You Think, No Snow Fairy, No in Prime Shareta.......He could pick up some big wins. I think a rematch with Gentildonna later in the year when she is not in season will show her true ability again. Last year Poor Danedream was being beaten by much lesser horses and by the time the middle of the summer came around she turned back into her dominant self. · 49 days ago ·

I believe the biggest reason that the American horses have not done well since the switch to Tapeta is that now they are facing a much better group of foreign horses than when the race was on dirt. Her competiton will include of some of the top horses in the world, Hunter's Light will be very tough, but with luck Royal Delta has a great chance. · 51 days ago ·

But, when I saw Royal Delta up close at last year's Breeders' Cup, I just smiled and said "Now that is what is a race horse is supposed to look like." ILuvTurfRacing · Among fillies & mares they come no classier than Royal Delta, and she has arguably the best trainer in America in Bill Mott to guide her. But since I am betting on the Dubai World Cup I also have to be objective, and the fact remains Royal Delta's probably 10lbs. better on conventional dirt than she is on synthetic surfaces. If the race were still being run on conventional dirt at Nad Al Sheba there'd be no other horse in the field I would consider backing, but it's not. After some early bumping, she got a fair enough trip in the race last year, but when it came to the business end of the race she was going backwards. 2 of the last 3 running's of the Dubai World Cup have been dominated by horses who show up at the carnival early and run well on tapeta. The 1 that wasn't was dominated by the Japanese contingent. It's hard to overlook that Hunter's Light has never been beaten in his career in stakes race on a synthetic surface. He's a perfect 4 for 4 with wins in the listed Churchill Stakes at 10f on Lingfield's all-weather track in Great Britain, the G2 Anatolia Trophy at 10f on polytrack in Turkey, G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 2 at 9-1/2f on tapeta in Dubai, and the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 at 10f on tapeta in Dubai. Overlooking that fact would be handicapping with your heart instead of your head. Given he's drawn perfectly in PP #4, it's hard for me to see past Hunter's Light being right there with a chance to win the race. I also can't and won't entirely dismiss Kassiano's chances either. He got another horrible draw, but he overcame breaking from PP #13 in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 to pass them all but Hunter's Light. He's also been amazing on tapeta at this year's Carnival. For my money, given his versatility on all surfaces, Animal Kingdom has the best chance of winning the race among the American contingent. · 51 days ago ·

If that's how you saw it, then I don't know who could change your mind, no problem, but you did leave out any reference to Transcend. I can't guarantee a win for Royal Delta, which I'd love to see, but I doubt her connections would go through the steps involved in sending her back to Dubai, with all that entails, if they didn't believe she had a great shot at winning and her trainer stated that the decision to return was made after last year's race because they knew she could have greatly improved her position, if not for the horse stopping in front of her, not to mention obviously they thought a better ride, as her then regular jockey was replaced. I do read all of your international stakes very detailed comments, and thank you for providing that info. Just that you did leave out that bit about Royal Delta's '12 DWC race trip. · 51 days ago ·

Age of Reason · As you noted on another thread below, Rafirox, I would really love to see Royal Delta get loose on the lead; we know she has the speed to get out front, and with the ridiculously soft early paces typical of World Cups at Meydan (I think the fastest 6f split the Dubai World Cup has seen since the shift to Tapeta was 1:16), that strategy might well give Royal Delta her best chance. rafirox · Yes. Mike Smith says he'll let Royal Delta "run her race" with her preference, I assume that means she'll go to the lead. We'll see if she can break well (unlike last year), get to the front, have easy fractions early, and just hopefully play catch me if you can for the final half mile. All I know is sustained pressers don't fare well in Dubai, so I'd let her get to the lead. Her style has changed hasn't it? It's not just the odds that bother him, he doesn't think she belongs in the World Cup to begin with. Who needs to calm down now? One time he was btching about a turf mare vs Ruffian's record(and that's okay if he likes the one over the other) and took crap from a blog here over to of all places bloodhorse. Last year Lezcano got schooled, that won't happen with Smitty this year. When they hit the half in 52/53 with her on the lead relaxed, turn off the video, it's over, game, set, match. 4/1 is accurrate in order to to make the race look competative I guess, realistically, 5/2 would be fair odds, 4/1 is an over lay on this lady, in this race. · 53 days ago ·

travel_vic · 1 was at the 2011 Alabama and we were in the paddock with Inglorious. She looked great and the odds took a big tumble......When the gate opened, Luis Contreas has a climbing animal that was completely off stride and ducking the kick back. I was there that day with the riders agent and Michael Vietch of the Saratogian newspaper and we all said about the same time "She is climbing." We later found out that Josie Carroll had not worked the Queens Plate winner a single time over the track and was coming off consistent polytrack contests. The animal did not handle the track and that opinion was backed up by all of us there together..Royal Delta opened up down the lane and widened with minimal encouragement. As a witness who was there that day, with experts, Inglorious lost the race out of the gate. · 53 days ago ·

Age of Reason · My only concern with what we seasoned experts (Hee!) have agreed upon, that is Royal Delta's making the lead in the DWC being by far her best chance of success, is that, as Steve Asmussen noted last year, "That place (Dubai) can really take the life out of a horse". Cases in point, Game On Dude and Regally Ready: two horses who normally would have broken at the start like bats out of you-know-where, go to Dubai and stumble out of the gate like drunks. Maybe it's the delayed jet lag, I don't know; but if Royal Delta isn't right there by the time they come out of the first turn I'll be concerned. Thankfully, her post draw toward the inside, with no front-running types that I know of inside her, could seem to be another advantage for her. #weshallsee · 52 days ago ·
