What the Nation is saying about the Derby Trial...

Whether you have two legs or four, it’s always a good idea to play to your strengths. Sometimes it takes longer to figure out those strengths for some than others. On the Belmont Stakes undercard, I’m expecting a big performance from a young colt who most assuredly will be playing to his strengths w...Read More
  • ruffianlover · I really like Capo Bastone and just think he is still finding his way. I hope to see him in the winners circle soon as I believe he has a lot of talent just has not been able to put everything together yet · 317 days ago ·
  • AndyScoggin · And Capo handled in his only sloppy track start, if Big Sandy is still sloppy on Saturday race 9. · 316 days ago ·

  • CauseForConcern · Looks like 20 could be enough points now. With all these defections, wouldn't it be ironic if they couldn't fill the 20-horse field? And, with Departing, Winning Cause, and Governor Charlie(among others) now aiming at the Preakness Stakes, it seems strange that the Preakness could be as competitive as the Derby? We have a little over 120 hours til the Derby, but, is there some doubt as to the significance of the point system now? · 355 days ago ·

  • Mary Z. · Yes, gelded 1, Officer Alex is my top pick in the Derby Trial. None are outstanding. officer Alex could get a nice pace set-up and if the track is off but not very sloppy, he's run well under those conditions. I do think your Titletown Five will go for the lead, but he'll be dueling with Zee Bros. · 357 days ago ·
  • Mary Z. · I liked enough about Ruble, too, Gelded1. I just post top 4 here. If I were to play a super, it would not just be my top four boxed, but it would include others for third or fourth, at least. · 357 days ago ·
The last three runnings of this race had the title of a previous Derby Trial winner, and namesake of Cliff Guilliams, a horse race writer who passed away, I think, 5 years ago. Was there any reasoning why they dropped the name, The Cliff's Edge, from The Cliff's Edge Derby Trial? I thought that that was a complimentary tribute. I guess they couldn't make any money off the name?
  • CauseForConcern · At this web site, not too many know who you were. Nor, do they probably care. I did know you, and though I didn't see eye-to-eye with you, Cliff, you lived The Dream. To be buddy-buddy with Woody Stephens, I can only imagine the stories you shared with Woody, a person who would win the Belmont Stakes five years in a row. Wow!!! To go to bat for Nick Zito, to try and get him voted in to the Hall of Fame, when no one else would, only showed his appreciation, when he showed up at your funeral to be a pall bearer. To have a horse named after you, that would run in the Kentucky Derby. Wow!!!! To have a race named after you, that is 86 years old, at one of the most renowned tracks, Churchill. Once again, wow!!! To think that you could vote for HOF nominees. Awesome!! Not many people knew of you, but, I think, Brian Zipse, would've loved to have been in your shoes. Brian, the guy that I'm talking about, lived The Dream. Wow!!! · 357 days ago ·

In sifting through the current list of Preakness possibles, it occurs to me that this year, more than most, the horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby stand head and shoulders above the new shooters.
