Porter has always maintained that position. As to BL you need to go back To the sequence if events. However, in the wake of Ferdinand and other horses like Our Mims who finally found her way to good home at the end, people are concerned where horses end up. Nothing is more upsetting that to go to websites that rescue horses and find for instance, the top selling Australian yearling in a kill buyers pen or see a horse who is skin and bones leave a dump like Mountaineer who earned over a million and the owners just stopped feeding him. · 36 days ago ·

Mary Z. · Good summation, Brian, for those who didn't know the history that has contributed to the seemingly odd decisions being made for HDG this year. I didn't think the weights were unfair, for example the spread between HDG's and Plum Pretty, as PP has not even raced yet this year, and she was soundly defeated in her last out in the BCLC, and HDG had defeated the winner of that race. If the 2lbs. were considered unfair for the '11 Del Cap, then how would a return of the favor in giving HDG less weight in the Apple Blossom be fair? It's like the owner would expect an apology and public announcement that HDG would have won the Del Cap at even weights with HDG, forget about the ride when she had the lead, but wasn't asked to accelerate away and was left waiting for BL to make her run. Now, they already avoided Mr.Pope's assignments by choosing the ungraded stakes over the Azeri and still in a snit at Apple Blossom time, but since the handicapper also works for Delaware Park, that means the Del Cap, which would be one opportunity for HDG and Royal Delta to face off, is out of the question, unless Mr.Pope hires a skywriter to spell out his most humble apology for all to see, followed by Mr.Hollendorfer's plane with his apology for any involvement in the '11 Del Cap assignments, a re-write of history basically. HDG will be giving weight against most of her female competition and she isn't undefeated, so really, what is she being saved from? She's not mine, and whatever decisions are made are by those who pay her expenses, take care of her, worry over her daily, but if this is over last year's Del Cap, watch the replay; it wasn't just the weight. Havre De Grace is an older mare who already won this race. Plum Pretty has only performed well against her fellow 3 year olds. Last time she took on her elders she was a well beaten 5th. ScottDick · Great piece! I just see a lot of games being played on both sides. I feel if Jones and Porter really wanted to win the Apple Blossom they'd run. As good as Plum Pretty was in the Oaks, she was less than stellar in the Breeders' Cup. Havre De Grace is 5 to 8 lengths better than Baffert's filly, so the 6 lbs wouldn't matter a bit. In my opinion. I just miss the glory days when a horse could carry 136 and beat his or her competition. · 51 days ago ·

Mike in SB · Handicaps are obsolete in todays racing, owners and trainers have always complained about weight for their horse, but when was the last time a horse really carried a lot of weight, the days of Forgo, Kelso, Dr. Fager and Spectacular Bid are long gone. It is hard to complain about a Horse of the Year asked to carry 123 pounds, 3 year old fillies carry 121 in the Oaks. The days of Handicap races are over, all races now should be weight for age. · 51 days ago ·

mikemoss13 · Thanks to a statement from an Oaklawn trainer yesterday, I'm reminded why proper weight assignments are so crucial. If HDG is assigned too low a weight here, how many of the other horses are going to run against her? Only 10 horses were nominated in the first place, and if she is assigned 117-120 along with the top 2 or 3 competitors, how many of the other nominees are NOT going to run? If her weight is too low, Oaklawn runs the risk of having an Apple Blossom race that has 3 or 4 entries. And then HDG wins by 6 lengths at odds of 1-9. The racing secretary, among other things, has to protect not only Oaklawn's interest in a competitive race, but also the bettors. · 51 days ago ·

Bluegrass · I enjoyed your article about Havre de Grace and the weight issue. I remember when Havre de Grace lost to Blind Luck in the Deleware HCP. Jones was livid. That two pounds definietly could have been the difference between those two horses in that race. So, I have no problem with them pulling her from the Apple Blossom because of the ridiculous weights set up for the race. It serves Oaklawn right. They were wrong. And, for the record, I don't think Porter and Jones are trying to manipulate the weights as stevebiscuit says. The weights should have been much more reasonable for all. Havre de Grace will face any challenge, I'm sure. The challenge just has to be a fair one. It's hard enough to defeat the competition. But, to have to give that much weight up, that, I'm sorry, is not fair. Anyway, just my two cents. · 51 days ago ·

First having his great horse Hard Spun have to deal with the juiced up cheat Curlin ad be denied any chance at HOY and then the allegations he went through after the Eight Belles tragedy, ironicaly against the juiced up cheat Big Brown. With regard to the HDG case IMO he and Porter already had their proverbial bite of the apple playing games with Oaklawn and Fargrounds before finally skiping the Graded Azeri for the ungraded New Orleans Lady. Maybe they get a pass since it was first back, but this current stuation is evolving into a real eyesore for racing. footlick · I would like to remind people that Blind Luck was not having the same type of year last year that she was having at 3 yrs old. HDG, on the other hand, was being touted as the best horse in the country. It would not be fair to weight BL on her exploits as a 3 yr old when she had been running as a 4 yr old. The Del Cap weights were fair fir the form that each had shown so far that year. They also made a comment about the weight they had to give Life at Ten, who wasn't even close to the horse she was the year before. Plum Pretty is a nice filly, but has not shown that she is good enough to not get 6 lbs from the reigning HOY. As someone said, what happens if Baffert decides at the last minute to run Plum Pretty in the La Troienne. mhswinds · My top five 5. Eight Belles- we don't know how good she really would have been. 4. Wildcat Betty B- Somewhat overlooked since she was a sprinter while the others where two turn horses. 3. Island Sand- If she hadn't run in the 05 Delaware Handicap and if it wheren't for a tornado at Ellis, I doubt Larry would even be at Delaware. 2 (shared). Havre de Grace and Kodiak Kowboy- the only reason why Grace is not co #1 with who the two other horses that I think are #1 is because she has only been with Larry for 3 starts so far. KK, well he's an Eclipse winner even though he spent a good portion of his career with Asmussen. 1 (shared). Hard Spun and Proud Spell- honestly even with Barbaro and Afleet Alex, these two have been the best horses that have come out of DP. Sure the latter two won TC races, but Proud Spell was one determined filly and I was honored to see her win the DE Oaks in person. CauseForConcern · Not sure where Blind Luck comes into this discussion. Jones has had some good ones. Island Sand, Proud Spell, Eight Belles, or Hard Spun, to name a few. The fact that he feels this might be the best in Havre De Grace, is a great testimony. I would lean toward Eight Belles, because I thought she would've went on to greater things, but, if Larry says it's Havre De Grace, I believe he knows better than anyone. DeadHeat · As of this year, where there is no current standout for HOTY a win here would be huge for HDG. Acclamation and Cape Blanco should be near the top of the ranks, but because they are turf runners they are shoved to the side. Tizway and Thirsty are the current spotlight horses because of their recent wins. The Factor has no shot at HOTY unless they want to go longer. You wanna talk about Grade one win in their back yard, that is The Factor and it was a sprint. HDG has probably beaten the best company of any horse gunning for the award. Switch and Blind Luck being at the top of the list. If she beats these she will some of the best males in the division. The only race she really did not face the best was Obeah. Should she win this she will have two grade one wins this year and a record of 5-4-1. Other that puts her right there with the turf stars, Stay Thirsty and Tizway. · 271 days ago ·

Sure hope his mouth doesn't overload his brain and they go to the Woodward and get their you-now-what's beat! That will leave them HAVING to meet BL somewhere in the Breeders Cup realm, either the Ladies' or the Classic, to have a shot at end of the year honors. Wouldn't it be ironic if they avoid BL now that it winds up biting them in the rear later. Why not let these two fillies race in the Personal Ensign, head to head, same weight, and then the final showdown in November? About the only thing I don't think you covered, Rick, is that Blind Luck has had an unbelievable campaign this past 15 months, traveling over 36,000 miles, has raced nearly 1 race a month over that time. She's durable, she's consistent, she has run at different distances including twice winning at the classic 10f, and on different surfaces, and her competition has been a virtual "who's who" of the top of the female ranks.....hard to find any fault with her, always finishing in the money in 22 starts. dubby30 · I am not sure what Grace stepping of a so called comfort zone would prove. Hollendorfer recognizes that his horse runs best on dirt. That is the surface that she has shown her best on. Grace trains on dirt, never once i dont believe has she stepped foot on an AWS and so I guess experimenting with a new surface mid way through her 4 year old season again BL a horse that has trained primarily on dirt would prove that BL is most likely the superior horse on an AWS. What I find much more interesting, though, is that only *one* colt/older horse in Saturday's Hollywood Gold Cup carried anything close to either weight here.....Candy carried 122, the rest much less. dubby30 · I have to respectfully disagree with the thought that a horse with 5 less Grade 1 wins and a million or so less in earnings should be conceding weight to Blind Luck. In the perfect world the horse with 6 Grade 1 wins and the million more in earnings should be carrying about 3-5 lbs more. But I guess that something is different in this scenerio. Looks like Hollendorfers' posturing and nominating to 3 or 4 different races accomplished the goal he was looking to achieve. Unfortunately it wont help much on the Track Saturday. · 324 days ago ·

Yes HDG won the only meeting between the two this year, but as Brian pointed out BL has the edged of the distance and track, being that she has beaten HDG over this track and at this distance before. She also is supposed to be back to her form last year, so in all fairness the weights, if reflecting everything up to this point would be equal. Hollendorfer loses a lot of respect for doing this crap, even Zenyatta and her connections would allow her to carry higher weights. What Hollendorfer did was act like a spoiled child who wouldn't play if he didn't get his way, and that would have cost the sport a fantastic match up and continuation of the type of rivalry that the sport so rarely sees. He had no problem with shipping or weight last year. He felt she relished the travel and was the much superior, why the change now? · 324 days ago ·

It's a handicap based on how the handicapper feels they would hit the wire. Obviously the handicapper feels that HDG is slightly better at equal weights and is assigning a token two pounds more. How many trainers nominate their horses for numerous races and many on the same day or the same weekend? Surely you can do better than that. BL has the better credentals and has the edge, so she should get the weight. She has the edge because she beat HDG over this track and distance. She is the one coming back into form when HDG has stayed where she was at the start of the season. They decided early on that they would go in the easier race, the Obeah, which even for a G3 was a total joke……………..As far as Blind Luck passing on the Apple Blossom. The Azeri was her 12th race in 13 months including her third race this year and she was tired. The Azeri showed that. The Apple Blossom would have been 13 races in 14 months which would have included several trips back and forth across the country and her forth race of the year. In the meantime HDG was fresh for the Azeri and the AB would have been her second race with very little travel. And it's not as if they ran Blind Luck in a different race that weekend instead of the Apple Blossom or the following weekend for that matter. They didn't run again for an additional 6 weeks. It looks like a 3-way race this year for the Eclipse Older Female, and, depending on what happens in the handicap and the 3 yo male divisions, we could just see a 3rd in a row Horse of the Year who is a female. It would be unprecedented, but so far, none of the males are reaching superstar heights...they all seem to stub their toes at the wrong time. Depends on the meetups with the TC winners later on and how they fare, but, if they don't perform as expected, look for the females to save the day. Awesome Maria, Blind Luck, and Havre de Grace have each won a G1 this year along with multiple wins, or strong seconds. It's still Girl Power!! · 346 days ago ·
