  • Mary Z. · kay, I agree, personally I'd like to see the Ladies' Classic (and the Personal Ensign) run at 10f. I don't know why these races were shortened except maybe to attract larger fields. Or was the thought with changing the Ladies' Classic distance that the ones capable of getting 10f should run with the males? · 226 days ago ·

  • northport · agree completely that we need a turf marathon, something to try to attract some of the great european stayers, and maybe encourage some more breeding for stamina. Question though, what preps are there for the dirt marathon? it seems that a lot of stakes are being shortened nowadays, what would one do to qualify for the dirt marathon? · 226 days ago ·

I've been saying this for a few years now. But I'd really like to see them add a 1-3/4 mile turf marathon onto the Breeders Cup even and lets see if we can't start getting some of those top European stayers to the event that we rarely, if ever, get to see in America. Anyone who follows turf racing in Europe knows that the horses who run in graded or group stakes races between 10f and 12f are the ones that see come over for the BC Turf. But they are not the same horses that over there they call their "Cup horses". That run in races like the Yorkshire Cup, Doncaster Cup, Ascot Gold Cup, Irish St. Leger, British Champions Long Distance Cup, etc....at distances from 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 miles. Given how think the purses in Europe have become over the years, a large purse Turf Marathon race might give racing fans in this country a chance to see horses like Fame and Glory, Opinion Poll, Colour Vision, Saddler's Rock or any of the other top stayers that would otherwise not come to run on conventional dirt at 1-3/4. It's only my opinion, but I think a Turf Marathon would strengthen the quality of the event. JMO.

  • kay.robinett · given how many miles/sprints they offer as part of the BC, another marathon - the second one for turf - would be most welcome! (any races which are carded for distance runners whether on dirt, turf, or synth are a treasure in this day and age) · 271 days ago ·
