buds · Im not so sure dossage predicts stamina anymore. In the last 10 derbys there have been 10 horses to finish in the top 5. (%20), while comprising way less than %20 of the field. They have also won 2 of the last 10, which is also 20%. Horses with a dossage index of less than 2 only account for 9 top 5 finishes in the last 10 years. So as of late horses with dossage of 4.0+ have done better than horses with supirior dossage. Im not sayin stamina doesnt matter, im just saying to use another method to calculate it. · 19 days ago ·

Trackside · @buds, Don't be to rigid in the 4.0 citeria as the guidlines seem to be rising each yr due to the influence of speed in American racing, thats why a few horses have outrun their pedigree and won the Derby. Lisa111 · Dosage Index alone can not be the only number to take into consideration, especcially with regards to the 10f distance. The total points, with the index and including Center of distribution will give a stronger picture of who can hit the board and who will have a harder time when it comes to Pedigree alone. This does not take past performances, etc, out of the picture, however it gives a fuller snapshot of inherant attributes for each horse. Higher points with a lower index and CD closest to 0 on a scale of +2 to -2 is ideal for the Derby. These numbers would be more easily accepted if there weren't 20 horses on the field disrupting the flow of the even the best pedigreed horses. These numbers are easily justified on a more managable 10f field of say 12 and under. · 19 days ago ·

That race produces a lot of visually appealing stretch runs that don't seem to translate to CD. The horse has bad breaking habits that could also impact his win chances. I agree definitley speed over stamina as Laura puts it. I wonder if he will eventually land on the lawn pemanently after the big dollar TC is over. El Kabong · Goldencents, Verrazano, Itsmyluckyday up front with the gov,the ox and uncaptured snorting down their necks will make for an honest pace, 23+, 46+ and perhaps from anxiety of this group, a 1:10+ for the 3/4. Faster than all the preps, except the Sunland Derby. That will be fast enough to weed out the pretenders by the 1/8 pole and allow for an exciting finish for those with the reserve to unleash for another panel. Lots of talent stalking mid pack and a larger than usual group of deep closers with real talent. Of all the horses on the outside of the fence, only Charming Kitten belongs. derbygrl · I hate the fact that NBC gives horse racing the cold shoulder to those fans without cable or satellite TV. They can interrupt regular braodcasting to show tennis and golf on their free NBC channel but can't do the same for horse racing. First they took away covering the Breeders Cup in it;s entirety and now they screw us out of prep races for the Derby. They chose to cover the World Series of Poker instead. Then when they did show the Blue Grass, they cut away and said the Arkansas Derby was going to be shown on it;s NBC Sportsnetwork station. There are many fans that can;t afford or choose not to have cable or satellite who deserve better treatment from NBC. I say that the NTRA should consider switching to Fox because they do a great job showing NASCAR. Horse racing fans can;t even watch the Kentucky Oaks or Black Eyed Susan without having cable or satellite. At least I can go online and watch racing but there are some who can;t even do that. The likes of Orb, Verrazano, Goldencents, Java's War, Overanalyze, Revolutionary, Vyjack, Will Take Charge, Itsmyluckyday, Palace Malice, and Normandy Invasion should discourage a few from wasting 50 grand to run against them. On The Gallop's · Well animal Kingdom prepper on Poly and won at Churchill, Dullahan won the Blue Grass and finished a close 3rd at Churchill, and Uncaptured won a few stakes races at Woodbine and won twice at Churchill. DAVIDM9999 · I agree with the writer’s view on this. I will look for dirt pedigrees first, then assess Poly form cautiously for the Derby. The five year sample size is small but that is what we have at this point. As a handicapper we take what we have and use it. I like to be ahead of the curve on trends so I will make assumptions. If I am right then I have an edge from the rest of the late adapters. If I am wrong then it will simply be a lost wager. I can live with that approach. I typically avoid the Blue Grass Stakes like the plague in the Derby. Not bullet proof obviously as Laura pointed out a few have hit the board. I found the article to be informative. ajump08 · The logic of calling Hard Spun a "dirt horse" is flawed. He beat Street Sense over the poly, infact was undefeated over it. Also, his progeny have shown great versatility to perform well over turf and poly...as I'm sure he would have if he had spent more time over either surfaces. AND, Dullahan and Paddy O' Prado (who didn't run bad at all in one of the stronger Classic field of the century) showed strong performances over the surface sloppy or not. These races aren't gonna produce the best every year, but in 5 years they account for 2 winners and 5 horses in the money (I count that being one horse in the money per year on average). · 36 days ago ·

Regardless of Hard Spun and Street Sense being a dirt horse or not, they were runners on Poly and when they came off it they were good runners in the TC. CauseForConcern · Included in the title of this thread is "Fact vs. Opinion". Fact-Street Sense has never won on synthetic; fact-Hard Spun defeated Street Sense at Turfway, three months AFTER the Triple Crown had been run; Fact - Pioneer of the Nile was the ONLY horse from Santa Anita's synthetic track to hit the board. Colonel John ran up the track in the Derby, but later in the year would win the Travers Stakes. There are many reasons for those to back the purpose of synthetic. I believe, in a lot of cases, they are valid, when it comes to the well being of the horse. But, I, as a handicapper, will continue to look elsewhere when handicapping the Ky Derby. I know that Animal Kingdom had won, after running at Turfway, and, possibly, one will eventually win the Derby after prepping in the Blue Grass. As will the UAE Derby winner. Even though there is only 2 weeks between the KD and the Preakness, and 3 weeks between the Preakness and Belmont. In my opinion you need at least 4 to 5 weeks before you head into the KD. I know that most needed to run and do well to assure a spot in the KD. But You have many well rested horses that have already proven they belong in the KD. Mike in SB · Patrick in the past most of the big preps were run 2 weeks before the Derby and the Bluegrass was run 10 days before the Derby. Joe Hirsch of the Racing Form used to eliminate any horse from his Derby pick if it had not run in 6 weeks. Look at the Preakness winners, almost all ran in the Derby 2 weeks before. Personally I think the horses from these races will benefit from coming back in 3 weeks in the Derby although I am not sure any are good enough to win. · 32 days ago ·

Unbridled's Fl Derby 1:52; Street Sense loss in Bluegrass 1:51, Animal Kingdom win the Spiral 1:52. Plenty of slow preps in the past that have produced Derby Winners. Monba was on the front end, Stately Victor was mid pack, never more than 5 off and only 3 off at the top of the lane. So while I will agree that horses making such moves, on poly or dirt have a difficult time doing that again in the Derby, it's not the poly that is to blame or the Bluegrass. It's a tough way to win a derby period. And if Java should win then that move goes to a 25% at Keeneland, which suddenly wouldn't make it such a bad thing. The only horses to successfully pull off a deep move and win the derby in this time period are Mine That Bird, who was only successful on poly before the derby and Street Sense who lost by a nostril in the Bluegrass on Poly. In the last 6 years, the Bluegrass has produced 1 winner and two 3rd place finishes in the Derby. I think only the Arkansas Derby and the Santa Anita can boast a better record. The Bluegrass results are not irrelevant since 2007, and yes that deep move is difficult to pull off in the Derby period, but it was Street Sense from the Bluegrass who did it best. It is interesting to see who will make the derby for these races are loaded with futures long shots. He's going to have faster early fractions this time with Divine Ambition and Falling Sky to his outside. He should get a clean trip; we'll see how that fast 8.5f translates to Oaklawn.
