I truly believe that Dortmund is the best male horse in training. To run the race he did after an eight month layoff and nearly beat an older, more mature champion like California Chrome is an exceptional feat. California Chrome, in his three year old campaign, came off a much shorter layoff, and one that no structural injury caused, in the Pennsylvania Derby and got demolished. As long as he stays healthy I genuinely think, and hope (because I love Dortmund) that he will boss the rest of the boys for the remainder of this year. And I really hope he comes back for one more year just as California Chrome did because, like Chrome, Dortmund never got to show what he can do over a full year. Vituperate me all you want for saying and thinking this, and if I'm wrong I'll eat my words, but I believe that Dortmund is the best male horse in training, regardless of age. I would say Dortmund, Songbird, Beholder are the three best horses currently racing, not necessarily in that order, though. I was never a Chrome fan, but will finally admit that he is a significantly better horse than I thought. At the moment, however, I still don't think he's as good as Dortmund is. Between now and the Breeder's Cup will be a very intriguing time, providing all horses stay healthy, and the Pacific Classic will likely answer a lot of questions. If Dortmund wins that and his subsequent race, because I don't think he'll train straight up to the BC from there, he deserves to be the favorite at the Classic. And I really do hope to see a five-year old campaign in which he stays injury free, takes on all comers and dominates every race he enters. I truly believe Dortmund has Hall of Fame ability. Apologies for sounding like a Dortmund fanboy, but I have always loved Bob Baffert's big guns. I believe Pharoah and Point Given are the two best three year olds of this century, and Dortmund's talent may not be all that far behind those two.
Good looking colt that I have been waiting to see start, finally does so on the 28th. Gets the services of Johnny V too. I'd like to see him do well.
Who's the bigger Horse Dortmund or The Rock? I think Ten is the tallest and Dortmund is heavier
The big question with Dortmund if he's racing in the Pacific Classic is: Will he be able to keep or improve on his San Diego Handicap form when carrying 124 pounds (and going 10f)? Based on his form of the 2015 KD, the answer is NO (the Preakness is a toss so it doesn't count, and he was probably carrying 140 pounds in that race). Based on his 2015 Native Diver's form, then the answer is YES (he was still going strong in the final furlong of that race under hand ride). Also he also looked stronger as a stalker than a pace-setter.
She is one of my favorite jockey. Would like to see her more success. I am Freelance Web Designer but still i like this game. Keep it up !!!
While I'm a little disappointed that she's retiring, I am excited to see her success as a broodmare. I hope she doesn't have any complications like her mother. Best of luck to all of her connections!
What is with everyone saying she ran a slow time? The stakes record is 1.49.15 and songbird ran 1.49.56 in a gallop at the wire. She was just off the stakes record and probably could have made it had Mike kept her in a drive instead of easing her. She ran faster than the previous four winners which included Curalina, Stopchargingmaria, questing, princess of sylmar- all quality top notch fillies. She won against the track bias of speed not winning and the rail being dead. She put away the second best filly in training easily. She literally does everything right and people still try to find a reason to bash her. It's unbelievable.
Don't know who is running in the Alabama. Maybe Off the Tracks? Weep no More? The Cotillion will at least have Cathryn Sophia and I would think at least one more top tier filly. I don't think the BC Distaff is a walk in the park by any stretch. Curaline, Stellar Wind, Cavorting, Forever Unbridled........tough field and I do not see why Songbird would be significantly favored. And who knows if Beholder does not beat Chrome/Dortmund/Melatonin in the Pacific Classic, her connections may think to go to the distaff as well. Sadly for Beholder I think the Pegasus World Cup comes a year late (unless Pharoah would have stuck around for it).
Is Samraat going to this race?
Curalina worked 1/2 mile 47 and change.
American Freedom outworked his stablemate Drefong in a 6f drill a few days ago. I'm not expecting that AF can win the Haskell but he's definitely training forwardly for this race and handily outworking a really good horse in the process.
  • Meydan Rocks via Disqus · Don't be shocked if he indeed does win! Folks are starting to rave. Who knows? · 9 hours ago
I think Songbird should skip the Alabama...too soon...less than 4 weeks...I would run her only 1 more time prior to Breeders Cup...Cotillion on 9/24 is a better fit....Just my opinion
Good looking horse. Responded well to the challenge at the top of the stretch. Northern Dancer blood line means she has a big heart. No one left in the 3 yr old filly class so time to take on the 3 yr old boys.
  • Mark Kennedy via Disqus · HERE WE GO AGAIN ugh I wont even respond its obvious · 13 hours ago
Worked sat 1/2 mile in 49 and change
Be nice to see him win for his dad
I'd like to see Connect move forward he looked good last time out Uncle vinny as well
Congrats to a tour de force filly.
No works in two weeks... not very encouraging.
I said 2 weeks ago it'll be another 5 length victory.....First time Mike Smith had to give her a couple love taps with the whip to wake her up...what added to the greatness of the race...Songbird did it off that rail.....
Thanks for posting the mares he covered. Wow impressive list! Untouched Talent and Take Charge Lady excited to see the outcome of these.
