What the Nation is saying about the Beldame...

Who would have though a gelding competing in starter allowances would cause such an enormous uproar in America? Well, Rapid Redux managed to do just that when he broke the modern American win streak last night, Thursday, November 21, 2011. The record was held by America’s sweetheart, the great mare,...Read More

  • genie918 · While I feel Rapid Redux should be recognized at the Eclipse Awards for his accomplishment, I do not believe that he deserves HOY because of the level of competition/races he has participated in. My vote would go for Havre de Grace. This year she won 5 races--3 GI and 2 G2 that included a win in the Woodward against the boys. Her only defeats were in the G2 Delaware Handicap by a nose to the great Blind Luck and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. In the Classic, she overcame traffic problems, being bumped and was still finishing strongly in the end, so her loss was respectable. Curlin won HOY honors in 2008 with a similiar record: 5 wins/4 GI and one ungraded race in Dubai, a second in the Man o' War and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. Now, I realize that one of Curlin's wins came in the Dubai World Cup--a race that adds extra points to ones resume when reviewing championship honors, but we have to keep in mind the type of year it has been in 2011. Havre de grace's record has been solid and consistent ALL year, so I hope the voters recognize this and give her the year end honors. · 78 days ago ·

  • Snowking6 · Rapid Redux is already in the history books--and deserves special notice at the Eclipse Awards and in other venues, and should never be forgotten. I would love to see him retired as soon as it makes sense to the Kentucky Horse Park. But Horse of the Year--even in a muddled year, does not make sense--simply because he is not at the class level to have made his record against the other contenders for HOY--almost certainly. We love him, though!! Great to see his sort in these modern times. In some ways, he is MY Horse of the Year! · 78 days ago ·

West coast horses did not do so well last yr other then the dirt mile fluke which I took all so I was happy. Baffert horses this yr besides Drill dont look to promising. · 121 days ago ·

I was all prepared to write that there are simply too many prep races today. • LAZMANNICK · I think that the concept of Super Saturday is great. It always has been. I was really looking forward to the day, but came away feeling kind of empty as if to ask the question, this is it? One concern is that the top level talent is spread very thin. The Beldame with five fillies, the favorite and one with a possible upset chance, and others that didn’t belong including LAT. Not much suspense. The Kelso scratched down to four entrants. There was possibly more suspense in wondering if Mo would move forward from the King Bishop and some suspense with J Bend because that one is an improving sort. Mo definitely was the highlight of the day. The Turf Classic maybe gave American Turf racing a bit of a shot in the arm. Cape Blanco was certainly all out to beat Dean’s Kitten and yet that one wasn’t all that far behind him when third in the Million. The Flower Bowl was a romp for Stacelita with the others all running for second money. The Vosburgh was the best race on the card in terms of depth of talent with some good sprinters and yet Giant Ryan dominated. Maybe the trouble at the start where Euroears and Apriority were taken out made it easier for him. What’s up with Trappe Shot? The JCGC was an extremely weak field for such a revered race. No G1 wins in a so called open G1 race. Flat Out’s first G1 win was dominant IMO. Stay Thirsty was a bust against older on a track he ran well on in the Belmont. Super Saturday used to be just that, but not anymore I’m afraid. · 129 days ago ·

  • annmatt · I loved Super Saturday, followed by the Arc races on Super Sunday morning and then a few lesser races Sunday afternoon! But this was my first such Super weekend! I came up with my own version of “speed watching” wall-to-wall races. I discovered how to watch all of this action without getting overwhelmed. With a little organization and a couple of online services, it was a snap. After experiencing racing online, I actually prefer it to the slower pace of watching on national television primarily because I can tailor the viewing experience to my own tastes and pace! This type of action has to appeal to younger fans, I would think, since their attention span is about 20 seconds! Once all the services get up to speed with HD, I think watching horse racing online is the best way to experience the sport. Am I the last one to know this and do others "speed watch" the races this way? Am I weird? · 127 days ago ·

  • Mike in SB · I thought Havre de Grace's win was the most impressive of the weekend by far, and with Flat Out winning the Gold Cup, she has to be the favorite for the Classic. Actually a lot of the Breeders Cup races are starting to look pretty good. Havre de Grace, Uncle Mo and the rest in the Classic makes it look like a better race now than it did a few months ago and the Ladies Classic looks wide open now. If the Arc Winner comes over and So You Think runs in the Classic this could be a very good Breeders Cup. · 129 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · Too bad that the only horse with the guts to take HDG on was RD. Both IT and ATM's connections played a big time duck card. ATM had no reason to go out west, not with the distance being so short and the purse being lower. They went west because they didn't want to face HDG, not because of any one turn crap. If the one turn made that huge of a difference you would see BD, JP, TS and a few others in the Vosburgh go to the Kelso. IT I don't think has ever lost at Belmont and is a beast in NY over 9fl. She absolutely slammed RD last time going 9f. Parx has much easier competition so her connections opted there instead. The only reason this field is not as strong as it has been recently is because of the monster racing in it. · 131 days ago ·
