Hey guys. I'll be out all day tomorrow (basketball tournament in morning, Derby undercard/Derby in afternoon and Warriors game at night + Mayweather PPV). So, I won't be posting by Sunday or Monday. I just wanted to give out my picks for the Derby: Danza and California Chrome are my top two picks. Interchangable, I think California Chrome is the one to beat. However, I really have a strong feeling about Danza. I think he'll drop back from the speed, stalk while saving ground (similar to AK Derby) and get them in the stretch. Should sit 6th to 8th in beautiful stalking position behind the leaders. He has stamina (evidented by strong kick and win going two turns first time) and will show it in the stretch. California Chrome speaks for himself. He is a very fast racehorse, can sit off leaders (looking to sit in 3rd or 4th) and looks to be able to distibute his energy going 10f. Ride on Curlin, Intense Holiday and Dance With Fate are my "secondary" picks, with Ride on Curlin high above them. Ride on Curlin is improving and I love him (remember my posts after his first start?). I'm not sure he'll get the best ride, but I think he can hit the board or win. I think Dance With Fate is a contender to hit the board because of his kick (same with counterpart Medal Count) but I don't expect this Keeneland horse to win the race. Intense Holiday is goofy, but he is working out well and might be a contender. There are several others I'll use underneath, but these are the ones I'll mainly be using. Horses like Wicked Strong, Chitu, Commanding Curve and Wildcat Red (and maybe more) will be used underneath. I'm going to hedge a bet between Danza (10-1 ML) and California Chrome (5/2 ML Favorite). I might put very small money on Ride on Curlin. Then, I am going to play a trifecta. Pretty confident in the undercard, and I'm hoping Sahara Sky can win with Shakin it Up in 2nd so my wallet can be filled heading into the big one. If not, Sahara Sky needs to at least come 2nd. Anyway, sorry for blabbering. As I said, I won't be on tomorrow (most likely). So, I hope everyone enjoys the Derby with their friends and family. Take care and have a good one.

  • UnionRagsRules · Rafi, quick question: Have you heard anything on Bern Identity? I love that colt, and get the warm fuzzies about him. If you hear anything, please let me know. Congrats on your picks and enjoy your Warrior game. · 140 days ago
Hey Sullivan, can you announce who won the HRN Road to Kentucky Derby contests. I think it was close, since there is one person who got additional points for the Get in the Gate & winning the derby points. It was a fun contests and I can't wait for the next contests. :)
Commanding Curve spoiled my super. Ah well. Congratulations to California Chrome, at least his win put me ahead on the day..
$1 super part wheel...14,16,20/14,16,20/14,16,19,20/4,8,14,16,19,20...$36 GL every1!
  • amino998 · Another Chrome tosser, the will pays have to be pretty. 5/2 in a normal race is very marginal, in the Derby, way too short so have to watch… ps: good thing I’m alive to most in the Pic3-->6 lol. · 141 days ago
  • tmallios · Nathan like i said back in January, this was head and shoulders the best 3yo. In the Preakness now,all he'll need is a little puppy on a leash. Will make the walk in the park that much more suited. He won this easier than any of the other races. · 141 days ago
So who do y'all got?
Stupid Question. with the scratches, is Ride on Curlin going to wear 19 as he originally drew or will he wear 18 because the 11 horse scratched?
  • UnionRagsRules · They are sliding 1-10 out a notch · 142 days ago
  • triple_double · ROC will wear the same saddlecloth number 19 as originally drew as well as the others. Number 11, Hoppertunity was a program scratched in the derby. · 142 days ago
I wonder how the dark side of the derby will be covered. People getting treated like criminals, security overreaching the publiics right, and the elites beinng treated like they're royalty.
List me the hores you are throwing out not even gonna bet them at all cause you think they have no shot at hitting the board? Mine are Wildcat Red,General A Rod,We Miss Artie, Harrys Holiday,Uncle Sigh

What time is the draw for positions?
Here is a suggestion for next years Derby Day and forward. Arguably there is never the high pitched interest in the 3yo division as Derby time. Unfortunately due to the rules ,only 20 horses are allowed to race. The fact that it is a dream of many owners to saddle a horse in the Derby, why not give them the next best thing. Institute the new race.Name it what ever you want,at what ever distance is desired. The race is for the 3yos that were ready to race and were left on the outside looking in. It would stir great chatter if one of the horses in the secondary race came out the eventual Star of the Day. This would not hurt the Preakness, since if they ran in the Derby. They would have the same time span. I think it would add to the days excitement. Also it would benefit those that had their horses redy to run if they were able to get in.

  • tmallios · Has nothing to do with wanting anyone in or out. Just imagine if this race existed this year. Don't you think that it would be an exciting and competetive race with the balance of the 3yos'. Just an extra quality race, nothing more nothing less. · 145 days ago
  • Sullivan · Preferable is a G1 Sprint for all the types that can't go long this early · 145 days ago
I find it funny the ml odds for the derby will mostly reflect everyones last race not there entire body of work

  • Sullivan · Distance may be an issue for Tapiture, if it isn't, he's the one to go to · 148 days ago
  • coyne.kaylor · I'm just leary of a horse on a downward trend as the distances increase going into the Derby. · 148 days ago
Well, it's a great Derby for the bettors, but the horse lovers lose again as fragile favorites fall. Wicked Strong and Uncle Sigh are sprinter's offspring. Liking Dance with Fate, Hoppertunity and Chrome, of course, but there isn't a worthy TC contender in the bunch.
  • striped mentality · All of my favorites got in. I for one am very excited for this years derby, much more so than last year. I am sorry you are so sour grapes about none of your favorites getting in, no one is forcing you to watch. Personally you could not have paid me to put money on any of the 'supposed' favorites this year (HC,CP, TB etc) So no loss there for me. There is an awful lot of pigeonholing that goes on around this site though ... it is a bit off putting. · 149 days ago
Next on deck...Vinceremos. In the hole we have...Harry's Holiday. Deep hole we have...Commanding Curve and PabloDel Monte. It will take a miracle to get Bayern or Social Inclusion in the gate.
Here are Jon White's (Santa Anita oddsmaker) current Kentucky Derby odds: California Chrome (5-2), Hoppertunity (8-1), Wicked Strong (8-1), Danza (12-1), Vicar's in Trouble (12-1), Dance With Fate (15-1), General a Rod (15-1), Samraat (15-1), Tapiture (15-1), Wildcat Red (15-1), Candy Boy (20-1), Intense Holiday (20-1), Medal Count (20-1), Ride On Curlin (20-1), Uncle Sigh (20-1), Chitu (30-1), Harry's Holiday (30-1), Ring Weekend (30-1), Vinceramos (30-1), We Miss Artie (30-1).
Will people help explain to me the difference between different types of speed figures? i.e. Brisnet vs. Beyer vs. TimeformUS? Obviously, they operate on some different scales, but do some take into account certain factors that others don't? I noticed Cal. Chrome is about 2-3 points the best on Bris and Beyer, but for some reason TimeformUS has Wicked Strong as the fastest by 3 on their ratings.

  • triple_double · After reviewing everything, I don't see any horse based outside of California will hit the board in the Kentucky Derby. You didn't hear it from me Johnnie!!! · 156 days ago
Far less speed in the race after today, so handicapping won't be as annoying.
Here's the updated and essentially final 2014 Kentucky Derby points standings after the Arkansas and Blue Grass. The Lexington Stakes next week could potentially bump someone, but unlikely. Cairo Prince in. Candy Boy in. http://www.kentuckyderby.com/sites/kentuckyderby.com/files/u64720/20140412%20Road%20to%20the%20Kentucky%20Derby%20Point%20Standings_1.pdf
Almost as interesting as the question of who will win the Derby?. Bodes the question as to how the riding assignments will wind up when the Musical chairs song ends. Take Hall of Famer Mike Smith. This weekend he is riding the Commish for Pletcher in the Ark. Derby. Assuming he gives a good account of himself, does Mikey choose him, Midnight Hawk,Hoppertunity or Intense Holiday. Assuming Bayern qualifies for the Derby,Stevens is locked in to that mount.Javier is in place with Constitution. Now we go to Rosario,he is on Tapiture. A first or 2nd place finish will put him on this horse through the Derby. We come up to unmentioned Super Star Johnny V. Does he stay on Wildcat or Artie. Or does he jump ship to ride The 2 Pletchers named earlier as part of Smiths Arsenal. You see more than likely ,Mikey will ride Midnight or Hoppy for Baffs. One thing for sure, there will be plenty of open mounts to be filled for the RUN FOR THE ROSES.

  • PantyRaid · New here and have a ???? why is Assmussan/connections running Tapiture in Ark Derby Math wise he is in !!!! Just a race work out ???? sorry thats 2 ??? · 167 days ago
  • tmallios · Panty in my opinion, they are running here because he has not accomplished or did anything meaning ful to date. He won a stake in a slow speed figure and he regressed from it his next time out. When i was calling for Chrome to bypass the S.A. Derby, the 2 races he had just run were faster than any 3yo around. He did not need a 3rd race that made those 2 look like a walk in the park. · 167 days ago
