What the Nation is saying about the 2013 Wood Memorial (G1)...

As a blogger for Horse Racing Nation I feel an obligation to come up with new and interesting ways to look at racing. In preparation for the 2013 Derby I did my research and wrote a couple of articles that ended up being on the mark.Read More

  • icyhotboo · We still have to wait for the draw but Verrezano and Orb seem to tower over the others. The only benefit to this is the 20 horse field that along with the extra distance helps the fan/bettor get a better price somewhere else and still have a chance.Current odds are Verrazano 4/1, Orb 5/1, Normady Invasion 10/1, Goldencents 10/1, Itsmyluckyday 12/1, etc. This is the first time that individual horses have been the betting favorite over the field taken as a whole. That may change, but not yet. · 435 days ago ·

It's quite conceivable that Eagles band members, Glenn Frey and Don Henley, could have easily written about the Kentucky Derby as opposed to relationships, when the songwriting duo penned the line "Who can go the distance, we'll find out," in their song titled, "The Long Run." The question is posed ...Read More

  • ismalli · You are correct on how, at a minimum, Dosage lets us know who has the DNA for Derby-Contention; yet, you underplay Post Position, especially with regard to who's inside your horse. Q:Why? · 436 days ago ·
  • Trackside · Ismali--I feel post position in the Derby is overrated...it is a long run to the first turn, and there is planty of time for riders to establish position. However, Post position at times, can be detrimental to some types of running styles, as a handicappers we have to evaluate if a certain post may or may not affect a horse. · 436 days ago ·
Post Wood Memorial, stories have been written that are claiming Verrazano was finally tested. We put that very claim to the test by comparing how the Wood Memorial was run versus other routes on the Aqueduct card that day...the results were quite revealing.Read More

Vyjack, whose four-race winning streak at the Big A ended with his third-place finish in the Wood, returned from his efforts in good order save for some mucous detected in a post-race examination, said trainer Rudy Rodriguez.Read More

  • head_heart_hooves · Mary Z: All I am saying is that, to me, he looks better-bred to get the distance. Yes, he is by Tapit, but he is from tail female family 1-c, as was Grindstone. He has a point in the “solid” category of his dosage as well (for whatever that is worth...). Verrazano is from TFF 13-d, which has never produced a Derby winnder. Much more importantly, NI really looked to me like he would have run past Verrazano given an extra furlong. He closed into a very slow pace. He didn't appear to have much trouble, just not much of a pace setup. Personally I prefer at least 2 other horses to these... · 457 days ago ·
Trainer Chad Brown saw a lot to like in Normandy Invasion’s fast-closing second to Verrazano in the Wood. For the first time in his four-race career, Normandy Invasion started from an inside post position, and he responded well to a little bumping and racing in close quarters before angling outside ...Read More

The Wood Memorial was billed as the battle of “V” versus “V”, Verrazano against Vyjack, and that is exactly how it played out. Verrazano got the “V” for Victory in the battle down the stretch against Vyjack and a late-running Normandy Invasion.Read More

The 2013 Wood Memorial sets up as a battle between Vyjack and Verrazano. That makes the race a clash of “V” versus “V” and thus it is very easy to think of the historic slogan of "V for Victory".Read More

Here is something to think about. If your goal is to get your horse into the Kentucky Derby then you need enough points to get you in. Verrazano and Vyjack already have enough points and are in the Derby. So why would you enter your horse in another stakes race when you don't need anymore points. The money! I don't think so. I know I wouldn't push my horse to the limit trying to win a race I don't need to win. Who knows, Verrazano and Vyjack might both be looking at this race as a tuneup workout type thing. Just a thought!

Trained Todd Pletcher, who will saddle favored Verrazano in Saturday’s Wood Memorial, gently debunked a “Derby Jinx” that could follow his currently undefeated colt to Churchill Downs, namely, that no horse who was unraced at age two has won the Derby since Apollo in 1882.Read More
