Wow, I didn't realize all these horses ran in FL this year. I think Take Charge Indy could be a nice play in the Derby to run into exotics - he doesn't have to have the lead. But the Borel factor will have him bet down after Friday's 'Louisville day at the downs"

Indy has gained my respect, and I totally love Calvin, and his ability, amazing. Indy will be a force. He sure has the pedigree. I love Hansen, but there are so many talented 3 yr olds poised, it will be very hard to pick the winner.

Borel controlled the pace with T.C.I. and was all out to hold the others off. I'll give them credit for the victory but I'm not sure they can win at 11/4 miles in a big field and with more pace to the race. Gulfstream favors speed and stalkers but Union Rags needed this race for the extra distance and experience in general and that coupled with the not so great trip and position Julian L.provided him with today. I still think he's the 1 to beat in Kentucky the first weekend in May. He showed me some grit today the way he finished the race .

Even tho Union Rags did not win it will be great for us that know he is the best. Maybe we will get 7-1 like we got on Barbaro on Derby day when the media chatter was all about touting horses that got lucky in prior races. As for Borel, KD jockey that has only won it on a sloppy track. Derby comes up fast Borel no where to be found. Hope the two one-dimensional runners Take Charge Indy and Hansen take all the betting action so the bettors can clean up with UR. All the fancy footwork on Derby day wont be enough...pray for rain.

The track was fast all day and there was no speed in the race. You new Borel was going to try and steal the race and he did. UR did not need the race though I wish he could have at least got second for my exacta.

Great article Ashley! The one thing about Calvin Borel is you never know when he will work his "rail magic" He can take horses that aren't "supposed" to win, get them on the rail and manage to pull something out of them. Amazing.

Personally, I liked what I saw from Union Rags. Once he had room to run, he was gunning for Take Charge Indy and almost had Reveron at the wire for the place. Take Charge Indy got a very nice ride from Borel, but had Union Rags not been bottled up, I think we can all agree that it would have been a very different race.

tv, Mr.Borel laid into TCI like , we're getting into the Ky. Derby or bust, and now they can. That colt didn't whip himself. Good distance breeding though. I would have been more impressed with a much faster final eighth, but blazing fast quarter preceding that.

EVERY rider I have spoken with for over the years says the same thing: horses respond to the first few hits and then noen afterward...In fact many sulk after repeated punshment. Borell has ZERO finesse and beat porr Rachel Alexandra not less thna 19 times in the Woodward....and she was NEVER the same again.

HORSES run races. These are not racing cars with an accelerator built in. They all have set styles that the pace scenario of the race either augments or retards. This colt was alone on the lead and no oen came to get him....The colt ran that race, no one else

you must not have spoken with a single rider I have seen in the past 20 years because they ALL hit their horse more than" the first few hits and none afterward" if needed. Rachel wasn't the same after the Woodward because Borel hit her so much? I thought she would only respond to the first few hits then none afterward. If that's the case she wasn't responding to Borel after those first few hits, she was doing it on her own. She sure wasn't sulking. Borel has no finesse? He finessed his way to 3 Derby's giving great rides every time. Rachel wasn't the same because she had such a hard year. Many horses regress from 3 to 4. Even more so when their 3yo campaign was very demanding as Rachels was.

right. She was gutted by that effort and all that whipping didn't change a thing. So you're pretty much saying it wasn't Borel's fault afterall. The whipping didn't change a thing right?

racing venues throughout the world are severelylimiting the nuber of hist because, they KNOW what everyone knows, FURTHER whipping beyond a few strokes does not make any difference, Ireland, England, Australia and Canada have instituted programs to limit the number of strokes any rider can use

Exactly. Further whipping beyond a few strokes does not make a difference. therefore you can't blame Borel for Rachel being "gutted". After the first few hits she wasn't responding to Borel whipping her. Hows is it Borel's fault if she wasn't responding to him after the first few hits? All that stuff you say about whipping not mattering after the first few hits proves it wasn't Borels fault because she was no longer responding to him, she was doing it on her own. According to you him whipping her after the first few hits had nothing to do with how she ran so how can you blame Borel if she was doing it on her own at the end.

but according to you when her stride was shortening she was no longer responding to Borel. To say it was Borel's fault that she was 'gutted" because he whipped her too much then turning around and saying horses don't respond to the whip after the first few hits is a total contradiction. Do you really not see that your making both arguments at the same time?? On one hand your saying Rachel was "gutted" because Borel hit her 19 times. On the other hand your saying repeated whipping doesn't change things.

So your saying that Rachel was in fact responding to the whip even after the first few hits Before you said horses didn't respond to the whip after the first few hits. So which is it? Rachel was responding to the whip or wasn't she?

Are you both saying that if a horse is giving all she's got, regardless of more whip, there's only so much and this is all there is? Hal Wiggins in Bloodhorse wondered if the Woodward didn't take too much out of RA.

I don't think the whip had anything to do with Rachel being "gutted" in the Woodward. She put out a HUGE effort in an attempt to win because she was a winner and always tried her best.

Since Borel was using a padded "popper" whip in the Woodward how could the animal be "gutted" . The real question should be did she even feel a sting? Quote from Hall of Famer jockey Kent Desormeaux regarding the Popper Whip, "The whip is not a whip. It is a noisemaker." Also per ET Baird, "It's like you're hitting with a marshmallow."

Florida, we always seem to like the same ones, only this time I didn't even know you liked Reveron beforehand lol. He seems to be the most proven out of the three longshots, never out of the top three also helps inspire confidence. Though, I don't think anyone is getting to Union Rags.

Its going to be tough to defeat Union Rags & El Padrino, but don't forget that Take Charge Indy ran a winning race when 2nd to El Padrino and will be laying it all on the line as he needs this race to get enough earnings to make the race, whereas the other 2 are safely in the field.

Capper the only problem I have with his race is that it was run in the slop. He did run a winning race, but with his record over a dry track, I can't help but be skeptical. If that race had been over a dry track he would be right there with Reveron for me.

Thanks for the compliments. AnnaK, breeders/buyers do plenty of research and have specific goals in mind when breeding/ buying horses. Although there is plenty of commercial breeding, the old adage of breeding the best to the best and hoping for the best still applies today. I hope that answers your question. If not, please email me privately.

Answers my question, thank you, now another unrelated to the above, but you're a good springboard. William Nack in the 4 part Secretariat YouTube (part 2 at 4:55on) is talking about Sec's progeny, a great broodmare sire etc, but that he can't think of a truly great racehorse who reproduced himself and he mentions,Man O War, Citation, Count Fleet, Alydar,Seattle Slew, Affirmed. Mentions neither Native Dancer, nor Northern Dancer. Nack does mention Eclipse, but do you think either Dancer qualifies as achieving reproducing as good as they ran?

I've been betting horses for over 50 years and have won and lost enough to allow me to contribute my 2 cents . I was at the Breeders Cup when Hanson and Union Rags crushed the greatest bunch of 2 yr olds . Of course to make the Derby exciting folks will have something to say about every horse using any angle to support their thoughts of winning big. I honestly know who is going to win this derby and I promise you it won't even be close , my pick will win by 5 . I cant tell you who it is , I can only hint , but if you read between the lines UR sure to collect !

Agave Kiss' trainer Rudy Rodriguez said that for the first time the fast filly was a bit winded after thr race.

Sprinting appears to be her thing, but there's nothing wrong with being a great sprinter.

I must say, Trinniberg looked very impressive in winning the Swale today. I was high on Ever So Lucky, but Trinniberg was just not going to be caught today.

Very impressed with On Fire Baby, I wonder if they will really go derby with her. Question - who would win a quarter mile race, Trinniberg or Agave Kiss?

That would be a fun couple of furlongs, Waya ... after yesterday, I would take the colt by a hair.

I know we all have Dervy fever - BUT - a nice Shout Out to Trinniberg for a super race. He's developing into a really nice sprinter. Loved his daddy and I'm getting kind of fond of this one!

Creative Cause & Bodemeister. If Empire Way gets there, you'll still get the non-power points and a good chance not many people will know much about him.

and i'd stick with the power horses you've got in place right now. No way Bodemeister will duplicate his maiden win, especially against such stout company,

I'm in the same boat as Scroggins with my power horses decision for this Saturday. I have a whole lot of them in three different barns and I do not know which ones to power up. That's why the Roses game is so much FUN!

Andy, I'd kick out Empire Way. Go back and look at his last race. He had a dream trip on the rail the entire way & just kind of clunked along. I think CC & Bodemeister are better than he & so does Rosario, as he picked to ride CC over Empire Way.

One thing I know for sure with this game is I am excellent at picking horses that will soon be injured and off the trail ... Good luck, Matt!

Obviously the post switched helped Prospective, but the addtition of blinkers really put him into the race earlier & he dug in and finished strong too. In the Davis he seemed to hang a bit, but when that horse moved up inside of him down the lane in dug it & fought all the way to the wire. Safe travels Ashley!

Golden Ticket beats Prospective if he hadn't dropped to the rail. The middle of the track was live at Tampa yesterday the rail was dead.

A better explanation since Prospective was on the rail for the first half of the race is the better horses were running in the middle of the track where 89% of winners everywhere run on dry fast tracks.

Prospective grinds out the Tampa Bay Derby
If Mark Casse had any doubts about Prospective fighting off Golden Ticket through the stretch run of the Grade II, $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday, his 3-year-old colt did an awesome job dispelling them.

I really think it's going to be a repeat of the top 2 in the Davis. Those 2 might switch positions, but I think that's the way they finish with Ravelos Boy or Cozzetti rounding the triple .....Take it to the bank !!!!!

Tampa Bay Derby 2012 Preview: Prospective lands better post
The final graded route prep at Tampa Bay Downs for Kentucky Derby 2012 hopefuls will be run on March 10 and the full field is reduced by one with the defection of Take Charge Indy. #10 Take Charge Indy (3-1) added a touch of class to this event and figured to make his presence felt throughout but hi...

Yeah, like Leparoux really have a tough decision to make. Battle Harden could win impressively and there is still no chance Leparoux is getting off UR. Period!
