A bulging field of 14 sophomores are set to do battle in the Grade I, $250,000 Hollywood Derby, while the Grade I, $250,000 Matriarch is expected to draw nine or 10 fillies and mares. Both races will be Sunday, the final day of the Turf Festival.Read More

Words from his trainer, Graham Motion; BH 10/2/12 updated 10/6/12: "Coming off the layoff, the Mile just seems very logical for him," said Motion, who captured the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) in 2004 with Better Talk Now and Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT) with Shared Account in 2010. "He certainly has the turn of foot to handle it. The timing is right for his schedule coming back, and the caliber of horse that he is, you're not going to look for a nice, easy spot. It's a totally different situation than last winter when we ran him in the Gulfstream allowance to get ready for the Dubai World Cup. Going a mile, we feel he should be very fit for this race, and he deserves the opportunity." The Hollywood Turf Cup to be run on December 15th., is at the distance of 1 1/2 miles. Possibly that would have been too long of a wait for Animal Kingdom's return, too long of distance for his first race back, and certainly not as prestigious as the BC Mile.
