What the Nation is saying about the 2012 Japan Cup (G1)...

Gentildonna is a superbly talented three-year-old filly, and with the victory she became the first sophomore female ever to win the Cup, but the decision seem less than just. Simply stated, Orfevre deserved to win the race, just as Buena Vista did two years ago. Perhaps the four-year-old son of Stay...Read More

  • On The Gallop's · All nonsense. If they felt Orfevre would beat Gentildonna they would run him in the Sheema Classic. · 128 days ago ·

  • On The Gallop's · Mike is 1000% correct. Orfevre did not run a straight line and the Filly simply muscled her way through. But hey you all above complaining can just simply not watch the race then :) · 128 days ago ·

After seeing the head on replay a few times now, I have to say there was much more contact caused by Gentildonna in this race against Orfevre than Buena Vista caused with Rose Kingdom in the 2010 Japan Cup and she was taken down as the winner. A great run from this 3YO filly, and I really like her, but after seeing the replay a few times I'm fairly convinced that without the bumping she did against Orfevre it's doubtful she holds him off from crossing the wire 1st, IMO.

I went back a few minutes ago and watched both replays of the 2010 and 2012 Japan Cups and this is my take. In 2010, Buena Vista made brief, incidental contact with Rose Kingdom about mid-stretch, which Rose Kingdom's jockey tried to make look worse than it really was by checking Rose Kingdom off of Buena Vista's heels. But Buena Vista cruised on across the wire easily and won by some 2 or 3 lengths, much the best horse in the race, and the stewards at Tokyo take Buena Vista down as the winner? In this year's race, Gentildonna looked like she was playing roller derby with Orfevre in the final 200-250 meters of the race, bumping into him multiple times, which resulted in a win for her which was barely even a nose, and the stewards let that order of finish stand? I've always said I think the stewards in Japan are pretty quick to DQ horses in their races over there for making minimal contact. But since they are that way I have to ask, where's the fair play here? If Gentildonna was not taken down as the winner this year, there's no way Buena Vista should've been taken down in 2010, IMO. I half way wonder if the stewards at Tokyo let the finish stand the way it was for fear that a second DQ in three years might make owners of other international horses hesitant to send them over to Japan for any future running's of the race? • yukichan · I was thinking that perhaps they made no change because both horses are owned by same owner--Sunday Racing. In fact, Sunday Racing owns show horse, Rulership, as well. · 174 days ago ·

  • mkstorm · If I recall, Buena Vista was disqualfied in 2010 because she cut off Rose Kingdom causing him to be checked and his momentum clearly slowed (although I don't believe he would have caught her anyway). In this year's race, Orfevre was bumped, but he was not checked and it was hard to determine if his momentum was noticeably slowed when he bumped with Gentidonna. Perhaps if Orfevre was running in a straight line and not coming in, then the filly would have been disqualifed for coming out and bumping him? I actually had a win bet on the filly and thought she was going to come down too so I still can't believe the results. · 173 days ago ·

Any update on the stewards enquiry?
Checking it out on my xpressbet mobile, post time is less than one hour at 10:40pm (pst) to watch a special horse named Orfevre. I also like Rulership and Gentildonna.
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe second Orfevre will have a chance to exact revenge over his Longchamp conqueror Solemia when the two clash in the Japan Cup on November 25. Read More

  • mkstorm · Still think Orfevre is the horse to beat in JC. Don't agree with the naysayers that this horse tired in the Arc. This horse has already proven that he can win at longer distances. I think his Arc loss was just a matter of the horse just letting up thinking the race was over. Can't really blame his French jockey who was urging him all the the way to the wire. Orfevre seems to be his own worst enemy. · 176 days ago ·
