  • kay.robinett · Flordaf, I believe that Jackson Bend, who along with Shack is notable for his soundness in recent years, also had at least three preps before his Derby. He also had a long nice career. Buackpasser, what Nerud says makes sense to me. Makes me hope that both Jackson Bend, Shack, Musket Man, Musketier, and others who proved to have long sound careers in recent years get huge books of high quality mares!!! · 495 days ago ·

  • Floridaf · Kay, you're correct. Jackson Bend had three prep races before the KY Derby; all three were graded stakes races, and he finished third in all three of them. JB and Shack were gutsy hard-knocking horses, and it's these stallions that we need to breed our mares to. Our sport is in desperate need of some new, sound genes. · 494 days ago ·

  • Winplacsho · I don't think there's any doubt Union Rags should be at the top of the heap right now, but a freak? I'm just not sure he really beat anything. He beat Discreet Dancer, who never routed before & was loose on the lead in both his starts sprinting. Other than that I think the field had mainly allowance horses at best. · 779 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · Winplacesho, there has not been a race, except for possibly the Holy Bull, that anyone can say that the winner beat a field of top flight horses. Even that race has things that people can nit pick, like Hansen needed the race/was too fresh, etc, or that some of the others didn't enjoy the sloppy going. Also, remember that UR was coming off a 4 month layoff and had every right to not turn in that type of eye catching performance. He sat off of slow splits and came home quick enough to make a decent time out of it. · 778 days ago ·

  • BOLD rULER · I think he can come back and get the distance. I think afleetalex hit three main factors but I don't think Hansen ran near his best race. I agree that if they can get him too relax then he could probably get the Derby distance. Maybe the blinkers off and another race under his belt (win or lose) sets him up for a good Derby shot with a nice price Derby day. I like his pedigree and I think he should be able to get that distance come Derby day. · 805 days ago ·

Personally, up until last year, I didn't have an huge problem with them. They made more sense. This year and last year the haven't. • linda.mitchellbender · You make me feel much better with your expert advise. I have watched Hansens races with much excitment. I listened to the trainers comments several days before the race and read everything I could find on the Web. DRF messed up my account so I couldn't see the race or bet. I called a friend and was told about the outcome. I read a clip that said the race time was off at Gulfstreamm as has been in many 1 mi.races. Upon checking with another timer it was 135 & chg. not 137. That even makes his fractions faster. I hope he came out of the race OK, as he had never ran on an off track, stumbling at the start and being passed before the wire. All new for him! Please don't ever think that they don't know if they have won or not. They know! Their whole attitude is different. I had a mare that after she won a race would actually do a little dance when cooling out, and a gelding that after a win would kick up in back every 3 or 4 steps on his way to the test barn. I hope the trainer & Jocky can figure out this talented colt. We need a special horse in this business badly! Will see what the future brings. I would like to hear your coments on the time. I know the ones posted at Gulfstream were fast enough for a mile! · 805 days ago ·

  • Floridaf · Scott, I almost wonder if the stumble at the start made Hansen panic a little bit. Up until yesterday, he had never been behind another horse, so my theory is that when he saw he was behind, he panicked, sprinted forward, and continued on in such fashion to remain in front even though he wasn't pressured early. JUST a theory, though. A lot of people are wanting to write off the colt on account of this race, but I believe it's too soon for that. And if I haven't said, let me just put it out there that I think Algorithms ran a great race. On account of the Hansen debacle, he is not getting nearly enough credit for the win. · 808 days ago ·
