Super Screener Winning Criteria - Juvenile

  • Rule #2 - High-Wire Act - Since 1998, on dirt runnings, only 3 times has the winner gone wire-to-wire.
  • Rule #6 - Speed (Fig) Trap - Short-priced horses who disappoint have high speed figs that are usually much higher than eventual winners.
  • Rule #8 - Run A Mile In Their Shoes -  12 of the past 14 winners had their final preps at 1 mile of more.

  • Mike in SB · It is interesting that today it is usually miler types that are 2 year old champions, I know there are exceptions, Lookin at Lucky for example, but still most of the top 2 year olds in this century have been milers. Contrast this to the champions from the 1970's almost all had great success stretching out to classic distances as 3 year olds. I hope Shanghai Bobby is starting a good run of races but this looks like a pretty tough race. He will have to be ready and run well to win. · 214 days ago ·

Do you remember the last time a horse won the Santa Anita Derby in his seasonal debut? No? I didn’t either. It just doesn’t seem like the kind of thing many horsemen would try to do. Then again, Bob Baffert is not your average, run of the mill thoroughbred horse trainer, and this rather unlikely fea...Read More
  • LaurieRoss · Great article as always Brian! Thanks for the Kudos! · 379 days ago ·
  • Trackside · I have nothing agaisnt Power Broker, but I think the Wood memorial would have been the better spot to run than the S.A. Derby. Sure, he would have to go up againnst Verrazano, but P.B. wouldn't have to deal with nearly the amount of other speed horses that he will in santa Aniat. Going 9 furlongs off a substantial layoff isnt easy for any horse, but doing it against what appears to be an unfavorable race setup is even harder. Nice colt, but this is really a tough spot for him to return. · 379 days ago ·
The absence of the 2YO Champion Shanghai Bobby on the Triple Crown trail really validates that this field was very weak. He's Had Enough, the 2nd place finisher, has hit the board once in his last four starts since the BC JUV. Capo Bastone, the 3rd place finisher, won an allowance by a mear head and came back and was well beaten in the Spiral Stakes. Fortify, the 4th place finisher, has had one start since the BC where he finished 6th in a Group 3 in Dubai. The two KY Derby hopeful left are Dynamic Sky and Power Broker. Dynamic Sky must finisher in the Top two in the Blue Grass to get in the KY Derby. Power Broker must finish in the top two in the Santa Anita Derby to have a run at the roses. This might just turn out to be one of the worst Breeders' Cup Juvenile fields we've ever seen.
  • Dressage3295 · Or it means that it was a strong field AT THE TIME. Horses have matured since then and distances have increased. The BCJ contained the best three year old males at that point in time. · 381 days ago ·
  • Mary Z. · Give just a smidgeon of credit to the ones that showed up to race without the precious Salix. I do think it was slower than something incredibly slow. · 381 days ago ·

  • Lisa111 · dani.pugh, I am very glad that I took the time to read your posts today. It allowed me the chance to revisit the entire race with a different mindset. As most who are looking to beat the favorite for a payoff one still must make the best decision no matter what the payoff is offering. I dont like going into a race being "afraid" of any horse so I went back and forgot about Bobbys name and the fact that he is the favorite. He will be on my exotics. Thanks again for your posts. · 448 days ago ·
  • ruffianlover · I agree with dani. Bobby is similar to the Biscuit where he seems to enjoy a challenge. He seems to not like having a horse pass him. I think that he lost focus when on the lead and was not sure what to do now that he had the lead. As soon as he saw HHE come close to him- he was sort of like "Oh crap I have to run again- no way I let this guy pass me". He also showed he had that extra kick left in him when running very close to the flying pace with title contender at the begging of the race. Can this horse get the distance? Not sure yet. But is the Juvenile an accurate race to justify that he can't? No. · 448 days ago ·

  • ruffian75 · Good article, Bryan. A question that came to mind: There are only five to have won the Ky Derby after having ran in the Juvenile. If I recall, they don't seem to do much after that. Seems Street Sense took a back seat to Curlin, thereafter. I guess Alysheba would be the exception to this rule, but I would think that, for the most part, that if they pursue this road to the Derby, it might not go much further? · 525 days ago ·
  • kentuckyderbypost · Ruffian75 - Fair point. Sea Hero raced as a 4 yr old but his best performance was a win in the Travers also at age 3. KY Derby was Mine That Bird’s last win, 0 for 9 after. Street Sense was retired after his 3-yr-old season but not before winning the Jim Dandy and Travers. Alysheba is the exception, raced at age 4 and won the BC Classic along with 5 other Grade 1 races. · 525 days ago ·
