Brian,, you brought tears to my eyes. This is what I've been feeling. This was not just "another Preakness". I thought I'll Have Another lost it before the turn. He was too far back, behind a monster who had it his own way. Bodemeister would not be coming back, and I could not believe my eyes when I saw I'll Have Another cut into that lead. It was inexcorable, but I still didn't think he'd get there until the last two jumps. It was the most amazing Preakness I've seen since Secretariat's.

Poetic, Brian. Watching that replay, it just made glad that someone had the talent to put all that I was thinking into words. I couldn't agree with you more. If I'll Have Another goes on to win the Belmont I think we can all say he certainly had to earn it every step of the way.

Two very good horses put it all out there for two very good races. 2012 has been quite a treat to racing fans so far, and with the Met Mile and Awesome Maria on Memorial Day and the Belmont looming. Very Good Stuff!!!

Great commentary Brian! I watch my DVR replay quite a bit, and I always get such a kick out of the fact that I enjoy watching it so much. I feel like I a newbie, not a fan/player/mutuel clerk who has numbly stared at a simulcast signal for over 25 years. I have not felt this way about a 3yo in a long time. Often enough a horse will get you excited, and regardless of how good they are, you just don't get attached. Not the case for me with I'll Have Another. I just want to wrap my arms around this colt, win or lose, and pepper him with hugs and kisses! It is so satisfying to see him run as he turns for home, legs flipping forward, ears pricked every which way, looking everywhere, but mostly ahead, and almost greenly, he runs the horse(s) in front of him down. And as you said, he just does it, not because the race set up for him that way. He is special. I am really looking forward to watching this horse grow. An expose in a few years as he romps in his paddock will find him to be a jaw dropping specimen of the perfect horse.

This is the most excited I have been since 2007 for sure. There are many legit G1 type horses in this field, and very few horses that you can actually say have no legit shot at wining the Derby. I have gotten so use to the 3yo fillies being the much better crop, this year is the complete opposite. Nice piece to get me more pumped up and wishing that 2 weeks flies by.

I agree that this is the best crop since 2007 and another thing is that this group seems to have better distance breeding than past crops. A lot of the top 2 year olds in recent years were not suited to the classic distance, this year many of the favorites going into the Derby look like they will have a good shot at 1 1/4 miles.

Mike, I would agree very much with that statement, as it is something i have noticed too. The breeding of most of the horses in this race screams distance, and not the typical speed push that we are used to seeing.

I think you've nailed it on the head! This is a great Derby class - and the facts are there to back it up! Even beyond that, I think this is deepest Derby I have ever seen - going back to 1990. There are probably 9 or 10 horses here who could run their race - and we would say they were deserving winners.

Cold hard facts that only two major contendewrs are out??? What about Algorithms, Sky Kingdom, Fed Biz?? As for "Depth of field" it might be more accurate to describe it as an "Evenly matched yet so far unremarkable field". Very few records will be falling this year, but as a consequence the competitions will be more exciting. Here's hoping that they all stay healthy!!

Sky Kingdom was never really a contender. It is a deep field when you look at the fact that pretty much every major Derby prep winner will most likely be there as of now. Less major players have been knocked off the Derby trail than usual.

with 5 or 6 jockeys in the field of twenty that have won KY Derbies, the "trip" will be the key. like in '07, If Calvin can't sneak up the wood, I don't know if he catches Hard Spun.

Did you see the interview with Andy Beyers in the Paulick Report? Because of the low Beyers speed figures for the prep races this year, he said this crop could be even worst than last year which he said was the weakest crop of 3 year olds in his lifetime.

I would say Dullahan has a much stronger. Body of work/race experience/style. but In the run for the roses it is a VERY tough race to pick the winner.

Bodemeister is not going to have the same type of race he had in Oakland. The Derby is a completely different race, best of the best and crowded with a lot of jockey jostling for position. It will come down to which Jockey will that battle and have a good closer under him.

Anti-Beyer, no. There are time where the man baffles me, but I'm not so biased as to say he is wrong when it looks as if he is right. I agree with the AD number, not so much the Blue Grass, meaning i would have put it higher. Time does matter, not when comparing two different tracks, but especially for a front runner or even closer time matters. Something I did not point out, Dullahan is now a proven horse for course, with two graded stakes won over Keeneland, both in the same type of fashion. He was well beaten over CD last year and I doubt we will see a huge improvement in the Derby. Bodemeister also has the Oaklawn advantage, meaning that for the last five years horses finishing in the top three of an Oaklawn prep, have been in the super of the Derby. Three out of those five times the horse has come in the top two. The Blue Grass winner typically does not fair well at Churchill, but more the horse that finishes just behind them ex...Paddy and Street Sense.

Anyone betting on Bode would be better off lighting the money on fire to heat their home. after running a 46 second half mile his next quarter was a slow 25.38 in other words he got a breather. He will not get one with Hansen on his butt. Union Rags is still the horse to beat.

Dullahan and Bodemeister were extremely impresssive and if they keep their form and they get decent trips and decent post positions then they look like the two to beat in the Derby. That is a lot of ifs!

Don't forget the two jocks who did the driving...Desormeaux & Smith got it done this past Saturday. The two wiley old veterans have both been there before. I'm sure both are pretty damn eager with their mounts going into this year's KY Derby. Both will be riding legit contenders for the Roses!

My question is..this horse has only won like 2 times right? And both at keeneland. Other times when he was tested on dirt he didnt show up. Yes, I know AK was a synthetic specilist going in, but his breeding showed otherwise. I think baffert will teach Body to rate, so if I had my choice Id go with Body. Not throwing Dullahan out, I just think theyr'es better ones in the field. Union Rags is still my strong choice.

This race will have all eyes on the break, what is going on up front and the time. I'm sure Dullahan fans will hope for Hansen and Bodemeister to slug it out while going 46. I don't expect it to happen. Hansen being caught in the Blue Grass had to bring doubts of his distance limitations. The Derby will have lots of horses besides Dullahan to worry about. I expect him to try to rate early on before stepping on it. The other angle is if Hansen lets it rip, Mike Smith has been in too many big wars to let Bodemeister burn with him.

I chose both colts for their wins this weekend and really like them both, but I think I might be leaning more towards Bodemeister on this one. Dullahan has an amazing rally, but Bodemeister did reaccelerate in the stretch with a wonderful turn of foot. If he's on the lead in the Derby I think he'll get cooked, but if he rates I think he's got a good shot.

If visual impressions are all that matter, than yes Bode impressed everyone who is not looking down the road. But if you are a serious capper evaluating what you saw in terms of who showed you a card in his Derby hand, then hands down, it was Dullahan. Let’s not talk time, even though Dullahan ran the fastest 9F prep race to date on a track that should have produced one of the slowest. He even the beat the kids on the LA freeway that was so damn fast that they finally decided to sprinkle in some sand. No, let’s not mention that, cause we’ll end up getting 8-1, right Zipse? Ok then, lets talk who beat whom. Dullahan schooled future derby runner Prospective and went by Hansen, who still looks pretty good to hit the board at CD. Bodemeister beat a pack of 8.5 at best nobodies, two of whom will prove that point by finishing up the track under 15th in the Derby if they are lucky and if they decide to even run. Typically 15 of the 20 entered in the KD finish 10 lengths behind the winner. When you finish 9 lengths behind anyone , in a 9F race, you have no business running 10F’s. Based on competition, Dullahan turned in a better performance if you are considering competition to be relevant, and where I come from, it’s everything. So you don’t impress me by beating schlepps by umpteen lengths. You do impress me by beating a winner who put up a great fight, but still had no answer as he watched Dullahan pass him by. So if you’re impressed with margin of length with no consideration of who is eating your dust, then score yourself some Bode love. But if you view these races as opportunities to help you wager down the road, Dullahan just did you a solid by throwing down a card he didn’t have to, but did anyway. And for those of you who still think he may have issues with dirt, ask yourself where his home base is. If you looked at the majority of workouts and guessed CD, score yourself another point. He knows that track better than anyone. When he gets a chance to run the distance he is bred to run on CD, you will feel silly for thinking a little dirt in his hoof would matter.

bodemister had better records on dirt than dullahan. that is his only advantage. both were expected to win giving on the conditions of their races were highly in their favor. bodemeister walks away on a speed track and dullahan wins on his home race against a horse with limited distance. bodemister will put a good deal of horses away in the derby, but i would say he would place or show.

I'm not big into race times, but lets face it. You don't see times for a 1m 1/8 at OP like Bode did that often. For a 3yo to do that at OP is very impressive. It was visually impressive. He easily beat his stablemate, who sure was fond of the OP surface coming in.

Terry, in my opinion, weight does not make that large of a difference in most cases. He faced a very very very weak field in his southwest division, before he went to Sunland. There he was against much more experience horses. Stirred Up, I believe finished second to Bode finished third there. The top two had prior stakes exp, and had proven to be stakes caliber horses. If the wieght he picked up had anything to do with it, it was very little. Castaway is just not that fast of a horse nor is he that kind of class.

With the likes of Gemologist, Union Rags, Hansen, and Alpha headed to Louisville, before today I wouldn't have even thought twice about backing Bodemeister in the Kentucky Derby? I honestly didn't think he was even the best horse that Baffert had in the race. But there's no doubt in my mind that Bodemeister turned in what's been by far the most visually impressive effort of any 3yr.old in any Ky. Derby prep race today in the Arkansas Derby. The further he went, the faster he looked. I think this colt could've run another 1/8th of a mile standing on his head today.

Curlin HOY & $10 million winner couldn't overcome quick ascension, lack of foundation & experience. Bodemeister' might be great, but history says he' won't be a Derby champ.

he progressed fast and he's not facing who Curlin faced, Street Sense. Of course Ur is the one to beat with the familiarity of CCD surface. That factor has played out huge in many derby's when favorites like Poin Given, Afleet Alex, couldn't handle the track

Stat lost to Union Rags on a sloppy track by a length and a half last year. Stat lost to Bodemeister by 13 lengths yesterday.

Stat looked so small next to the others in the Arkansas Derby. Once he puts on a few hundred pounds he'll win some races. Hes a miler right now. This was his first time around two turns.

Bodedmeister was impressive but the solid truth remains that not since Apollo has an unraced-at-two horse been able to win the KD. Having said that, can you say bounce?

Someone said "bounce" in regard to Bodemeister before the AD and I couldn't get him to understand there was no reason for a bounce but a big reason to bet him that being his upside.

different people have a differen interpretation of a bounce. Some would say Hansen bounced, I wouldn't he ran his normal race.

Hansen ran an excellent race, and picked up a nice check for his connections on the way to Louisville.

Bodemeister I think can run away with it, Seeing Drill lose in the Northern Spur is huge. Since Drill beat Creative Cause twice, but lost to lower quality horses today.

candice.c.curtis, that's correct but if you look at the track lay out on the form the starting gate it looks to the first turn it looks about the same. Hard to believe they would give them that short a run to the 1st turn. Anyway on this site unless you buy it you don't get it, not from them anyway, just lame picks.

I got my number from measuring the satellite image of the track on Google Earth. Oaklawn doesn't have a super-long stretch.

Already changed my long-shot picks after a few more hours of study - I like Cozzetti as the sleeper pick but think Isn't He Clever will be tough with his stalking style. Good luck all!
