Tizway handled a deep and talented field, two turns, and 1 1/8 miles with aplomb Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, rolling to an emphatic three-length victory over Flat Out in the 84th running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney Invitational Handicap. Read More
Mission Impazible on top. Reason why is I like Pletcher/Castellano connection. This horse is proven over this distance over some quality races and competition. Horse has beaten Giant Oak and Apart at this distance. Infact, this horse has beaten Apart quite a few times. His speed figures for this race in right there and he comes off the pace. They paid good money to breed this horse, has one of the best trainers trainign him with some sharp workout times.
Who is Michael Pavelick going for in here? Hes on fire.. I like 1,5,4,7 in that order

  • MichaelPavelick · Interesting comment about Giant Oak. I've made a couple of recent comments about him myself. This was before I saw the Beyer speed ratings though. Wouldn't be surprised to see him run big. · 297 days ago ·

  • ruffed grouse · He will need some pace though, like a half in 46 and change which I believe he will get. This will really be a riders race, who gets the best trip will decide it. · 297 days ago ·

Close Whitney this year, but have to go with Mission Impazible, or so my 79% winning formula says.
On the eve of the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, Tizway is on the threshold of greatness for trainer Jim Bond.Read More
  • zatt · I've always been a fan. Bond ... James Bond deserves a Horse of the Year as much as just about any trainer out there. Maybe this year? · 298 days ago ·

  • BigAConfidential · Great piece Bill. I'll echo Brian's sentiments. Bond is the kind of knockaround guy that I really respect. If he runs back to that incredible Met Mile, Tizway could well be the breakthrough horse he's waited a career for. · 297 days ago ·

rail trip pulls surprise, why not it is Saratoga
Sentimentally, I'm rooting for a win for either Tizway or Morning Line. Reason-wise, Flat Out, Tizway, and Rail Trip are the top three picks.
The storied Whitney Handicap could go a long way in finding a leader among a muddled division of older males.Read More

  • DeadHeat · Rail Trip has never struck me as a slow horse, especially when he ran 1.40 and change for 8.5f last out ;) Look for a horse you know has the tactical speed to rate but will be the closer to the pace, 5 or 6 from the front. Saratoga is deep and tiring, more than some other tracks in the US, so when a horse looks like it is running slow, it is probably running evenly, when it is running evenly it's probably running fast, and when your going fast your burning up the track. · 299 days ago ·

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey is still on the fence on whether to start Stuart Janney’s Hymn Book in Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney Invitational or await the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch on August 26.   The 5-year-old gelded son of Arch, 5-3-1 from 10 starts, made his first graded stakes appearance...Read More

Charles “Scooter” Dickey, trainer of Flat Out (No. 1, 4-1) by telephone: “The post position doesn’t make any difference to him. I like my chances, and the horse is doing well. I think this could be one of the best fields I've seen assembled in 2011.
Multiple Grade 1 winner Giant Oak put in his final preparation for the Whitney Invitational with a bullet five-furlong work over the main track that went in 58.97 seconds with regular rider Shaun Bridgmohan.   “He broke off at the pole pretty calm,” said Arthur Coontz, assistant to trainer Chri...Read More
Whitney invitee Rodman, most recently third in the Grade 2 Suburban, worked five furlongs this morning in 59.77 in his final serious move for Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile race.   “It was a little faster than we wanted, but he had a target in front of him, so it wasn’t that surprising,” said Mike Hushi...Read More
Alex Lieblong’s Duke of Mischief turned in a bullet half-mile breeze under exercise rider Nick Esler over the main track at Saratoga Sunday morning, his final serious move before a planned start in next Saturday’s Whitney. Trainer Mike Hushion will be well-represented next Saturday when he sends out Met Mile runner-up Rodman in the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational and Roman Treasure and Ava K. in the Grade 1 Test.   Rodman, who will likely work on Sunday for the 1 1/8-mile Whitney, has been no worse than third in fou...Read More
