What the Nation is saying about the 2011 Sussex Stakes (G1)...

Big story that just broke a few hours ago on the Racing Post web-site. The G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse, which last season carried a purse of $300,000, has dangled a carrot on a stick in the faces of the connections of both Frankel and Black Caviar, and offered to up the purse to a cool $1 million dollars if the two would agree to meet in the G1 Sussex Stakes in late July? I think Black Caviar's been an incredible sprinter to this point in her career, and she's shown the durability to go 6f and 7f. But I have to say, going a mile at Goodwood, I'm just not convinced she'll enjoy facing Frankel? I thought for sure that Frankel was going to get his comeuppance in last year's Sussex Stakes. Facing older horses for the first time, and staring down the barrel at Canford Cliffs. Who came into last year's Sussex Stakes on a 5 straight G1 stake win streak which began in 2010 with Irish 2000 Guineas, the St James's Palace Stakes, and the Sussex Stakes. Then carried over into 2011 to Lockinge Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. Canford Cliffs was an incredible miler in his own right with a tremendous turn of foot who had just cantered all over Rip Van Winkle the season prior to win the Sussex Stakes. But I'm telling you, for those who never saw the race or don't remember, Frankel left Canford Cliffs absolutely for dead in the 2011 renewal of the Sussex Stakes in just a matter of 3 or 4 big strides. Just left him for dead. One of the most impressive pure burst's of speed I've ever seen to leave another incredibly fast horse for dead so easily. I really don't think Black Caviar's connections have been doing her a lot favors keeping her exclusively in Australia, and beating up on the same old horses over and over. No doubt, she's fast. But at a mile against Frankel at Goodwood, I truly believe he'll leave her for dead the same way he did Canford Cliffs the year prior. Assuming the 2 actually accept the offer and both show up for the race? JMO.

  • Age of Reason · Agreed with MaryZ. If they could shorten it up to 7 furlongs (and why not, we lengthened the Apple Blossom for Zenyatta?)...Race. Of. The. Year. · 744 days ago ·
  • footlick · if they are serious about stretching him out, I doubt they would shorten him up to 7 furlongs. · 744 days ago ·
FRANKEL was hailed as one of the all-time greats by his legendary trainer Sir Henry Cecil after he stretched his unbeaten record to eight when he dismissed Canford Cliffs in devastating fashion in Goodwood's much-vaunted Duel on the Downs.Read More

  • medlocke · Every time I watch the replay of the Sussex Stakes, I shake my head in disbelief!! The burst of speed that Frankel uncorked at Goodwood today was unbelievable. Anyone who's followed Canford Cliffs know's that the turn of foot that he has isn't chopped liver by any means. But when you can create a burst of speed that leaves a horse like Canford Cliffs for dead, then you're truly in a league of your own. At a mile, anyway. · 996 days ago ·

  • medlocke · Without a doubt, Frankel's a special horse with freakish ability. He's made some very good looking 3yr.old's look very ordinary so far in his career. That said, I don't think there's a better turf miler in racing right now than Canford Cliffs. I think Frankel being the favorite in the Sussex Stakes stems in large part from him having to give Frankel 9lbs. in the race. But Canford Cliffs is a big bull of a horse himself, with an incredible turn of foot. It's no accident that he beat Goldikova in this year's Queen Anne Stakes, and it's also no accident that he's won 5 straight major G1 races at a mile on turf. Frankel's great. But he's yet to face a horse with the speed and tactical ability that Canford Cliffs possesses. My $$ says that Canford Cliffs repeats as Sussex Stakes champion again this year!! But it should be a fantastic race!! · 1002 days ago ·

FRANKEL is going to find life significantly more difficult against the "big boys" in the eagerly anticipated Qipco Sussex Stakes, according to connections of last year's winner, Canford Cliffs, who goes for a repeat.Read More

  • horsisars · Real tough call.. arguments for both.. Can he beat the big boys? Canford Cliffs is tough... so tough. I have not seen the rest of the field. I will take... hmmmmm it s close, but I hope Frankel keeps the unbeaten streak alive... I would not bet my house on it.. but that is my choice. Good luck to both horses. · 1010 days ago ·
  • medlocke · For the record, I think Frankel is an incredible horse!! Very freakish in nature, and he makes some of the other very talented 3yr.old's in Europe look very ordinary. That said, among those 3yr.old's, I don't believe that Frankel has faced a horse with anywhere near the level of speed and tactical ability that Canford Cliffs has. It's no accident that Canford Cliffs beat Goldikova in this year's Queen Anne Stakes, and it's also no accident that Canford Cliffs has reeled off 5 straight major G1 win's at a mile on turf. He'll be very hard for Frankel to try and beat in the Sussex Stakes, IMO. · 1005 days ago ·
I think ZoffanyThe horse who I feel may be able to spring an upset over the likely first and second choice Canford Cliffs and Frankel, is Zoffany. He ran a game second in the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly. I think after CC disposes of Frankel, he'll have to hold off Zoffany, to scoop the cash. It should be a great race!
The G1 Sussex Stakes coming up at Goodwood in the UK has been cut down to a 5 horse field. But 4 of the 5 in the field are all awfully good milers, and the 5th entry, Neebras, on a very gradual upward curve himself. The field for the Sussex Stakes now consist of Neebras, Zoffany, Dick Turpin, Frankel, and Canford Cliffs. Should be an exciting race with Frankel and Canford Cliffs going head to head with each other, IMO.
