  • footlick · Mary Z.- I'm not sure he likes soft turf, which might be why they really haven't run him outside of Cal much. If the turf was to his liking, I certainly think he could have taken the Sword Dancer. The fact that he won the Pacific Classic, though has opened up even more options for him in California, so they may opt for a turf and synthetic year. · 505 days ago ·

  • LAZMANNICK · I wouldn’t hold a dismal finish in the Charlestown race against any horse. The track is essentially a bull ring, much like Fairplex, with very sharp turns. The track was also sloppy and sealed. It’s easy to see that he didn’t like that race based on how dismal he ran and yet he bounced back and won his next five in a row. As for the Kilroe Mile, Acclamation isn’t a miler and is zero for two in that particular race. He’s a true router who likes to set a controlled pace and when he can do this is very tough to beat. In fact the only way to beat him in a route when they are planning on taking him to the front is to challenge right from the beginning. · 505 days ago ·

Who would have though a gelding competing in starter allowances would cause such an enormous uproar in America? Well, Rapid Redux managed to do just that when he broke the modern American win streak last night, Thursday, November 21, 2011. The record was held by America’s sweetheart, the great mare,...Read More

  • genie918 · While I feel Rapid Redux should be recognized at the Eclipse Awards for his accomplishment, I do not believe that he deserves HOY because of the level of competition/races he has participated in. My vote would go for Havre de Grace. This year she won 5 races--3 GI and 2 G2 that included a win in the Woodward against the boys. Her only defeats were in the G2 Delaware Handicap by a nose to the great Blind Luck and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. In the Classic, she overcame traffic problems, being bumped and was still finishing strongly in the end, so her loss was respectable. Curlin won HOY honors in 2008 with a similiar record: 5 wins/4 GI and one ungraded race in Dubai, a second in the Man o' War and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. Now, I realize that one of Curlin's wins came in the Dubai World Cup--a race that adds extra points to ones resume when reviewing championship honors, but we have to keep in mind the type of year it has been in 2011. Havre de grace's record has been solid and consistent ALL year, so I hope the voters recognize this and give her the year end honors. · 548 days ago ·

  • Snowking6 · Rapid Redux is already in the history books--and deserves special notice at the Eclipse Awards and in other venues, and should never be forgotten. I would love to see him retired as soon as it makes sense to the Kentucky Horse Park. But Horse of the Year--even in a muddled year, does not make sense--simply because he is not at the class level to have made his record against the other contenders for HOY--almost certainly. We love him, though!! Great to see his sort in these modern times. In some ways, he is MY Horse of the Year! · 548 days ago ·

  • CauseForConcern · DeadHeat, thanks for the acknowledgement. I didn't expect many, if any, to support my choice. THAS and ST met once, in the Florida Derby, and THAS was the better in that race(although a ways back). His time in this last race was 2 seconds faster than when he ran in the Florida Derby(although different tracks). I do believe he's on the upswing, but, then again, he can prove me wrong in the Pa Derby. Looks like that race could shape up to be a good one, with Uncle Mo possibly committing. · 633 days ago ·

Acclamation set a controlled tempo and gamely held off favorite Twirling Candy in Sunday's Grade 1 Pacific Classic from Del Mar. Read More

  • medlocke · Yet another result that proves my point about saying that there's absolutely no standout among the older American horses this season. Nearly every "so-called" expert that I heard handicap the Pacific Classic had either Twirling Candy or Game on Dude penciled in as the winner of the race. I really do believe that this year's Breeders Cup Classic is going to be very vulnerable to being won by one of the European horses. In my mind, Tizway has looked the best among the older American horses on conventional dirt. But Tizway's ability to stay 1-1/4 effectively enough to win the Classic is very much in question? The only time he's ever tried 1-1/4 was in the 09' JCGC, and he finished a well beaten 3rd on the day. About 6 lengths behind Summer Bird and about 5 lengths behind Quality Road. The way things stand right now, I personally believe that Stay Thirsty may represent America's best chance of keeping the Breeders Cup Classic trophy in America this year. TJMO. · 634 days ago ·

  • ruffed grouse · Not a total shocker as turf horses seem to run well on that particular surface. Twirling Candy ran great he just got beat, the winner was allowed and easy half and there goes the race as many others have noted here. That being said Twirling Candy had dead aim at the winner in the stretch but could not get by. Coming home in 47 and change is quite impressive for both horses and the last part in 12 and change. I don't know if the winner will be as good on the CD dirt as he was this weekend but take nothing away from him on this one, just a head better. Twirling Candy has run 3 time at this distance, throw the rodeo race out and he has been beaten a neck and a head. He has also danced in all the big races out west which is what we all want from our best horses so Kudos to the owners and trainer, they could have easily gone to the grass at a shorter distance. · 634 days ago ·

  • medlocke · Comparing Blind Luck with Goldikova is like trying to compare apples with oranges, IMO. Two completely different fillies/mares, that have two very uniquely different running styles, that race primarily on two different continents, on two different surfaces entirely, and at multiple distances. With Blind Luck, although she's a filly that had run well in the past on synthetic surfaces. I think few would doubt that she's at her best on conventional dirt. And you're likely to see Blind Luck in races that are run anywhere from a 1-1/16 to 1-1/4. Goldikova is, and has been for her entire career, solely a turf mare. Who's primary, and best distance has always been a mile. Occasionally, you'll see Goldikova stray a little beyond a mile. Like she has in winning the G1 Prix D' Ispahan at 9f the last 2 seasons. And occasionally you'll see Goldikova drop down under a mile to 7f. To run in the G1 Prix De l' Foret each year at Longchamp. But 90% or better of Goldikova's racing career has been at a flat mile. I think the only real comparison that you can make between Blind Luck and Goldikova is that both are supremely talented filly/mares!! TJMO. · 640 days ago ·

  • New York Vinnie · TimSmith - ok, I said that with quite a bit of presumptuousness. I believe that it will take at least one Grade 1 win in addition to a Breeders' Cup win to secure the Horse of the Year title. I believe that Blind Luck, already in an almost tie with Tizway, has the easiest path providing she goes in the Distaff. Tizway would have to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Classic, and Cape Blanco would have to win another Grade 1 race in addition to the BC Turf to be the HOY. HvG would have to win the Woodward and either the Distaff or the Classic. Either way, Blind Luck should cruise on in to her HOY honors. IMO. · 638 days ago ·
