Thursday of Derby week in my household means one thing -- securing enough mint to begin the maturation process of my secret syrup base to be used in Saturday’s mint juleps. Once I smell that fresh mint on my fingers, it’s yet another enforcement that The Derby is indeed within 48 hours of actually h...Read More

  • railbird33 · Ann, you're dead on! The BC Juvenile isn't a good predictor of Derby success, in that one one- Street Sense has been successful in 25 previous champions. Also, although the last four Derby winners had two 3YO starts - that REALLY bucks history in that less than ten KY Derby winners have won on two 3 YO starts in 136 tries, and some really good horses: Point Given, Curlin, Afeet Alex, Lucking at Lucky weren't fit. I don't see a triple crown winner this year. Based on Uncle Mo's 89 Beyers in his only 3YO start- he'll have to be a super-improved horse in a twenty horse field at a mile & a quarter. I'm looking else-where. · 790 days ago ·

  • tstoztr1 · Uncle Mo didn't break a sweat getting an 89 Beyer in the TW. Most of this year's Derby contenders are going all out to earn in the 90s. I think we'll see Mo run a low 100s in the Wood and Johnny V won't even use the whip. The key to winning the Derby is having your horse peak at the right time. I think Mo is a lock, just like Big Brown was. · 787 days ago ·

While the sport awaits the majestic return of Uncle Mo next month, several other three-year-olds served notice last weekend that the division’s reigning champion will not be given a free pass in this year’s Triple Crown races. • bstaubs22 · Gourmet Dinner had a little bit of a troubled trip inside while trying to get through and should have probably got second. I think Dialed In would have still nailed him and even though Ducky mad a big jump, if he is given proper rest, he may surprise down the line. Still early and still so wide open! · 838 days ago ·

The Holy Bull Stakes (G3) lost a major contender when trainer Rick Dutrow pulled Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) runner-up Boys At Tosconova from consideration, but with a $400,000 purse the one-turn mile race nonetheless attracted a strong field. • arazi · Mucho Macho Man is training like a beast, but there isn't as much speed as there looks in here. I think Leave of Absence can be tough in here, might even grab the lead from Black N Beauty. Gourmet Dinner, Major Gain and Dialed In have potential to be factors on the Derby trail, but not at one mile at Gulfstream unless there's a total pace meltdown, and that doesn't look likely here. · 844 days ago ·
