What the Nation is saying about the 2011 El Camino Real Derby (G3)...

I thought I would use this week to talk about some news and notes around Golden Gate Fields and update you on some horses and jockeys that I have mentioned over the past few months. Saddle up and here we go. The call to the post signifies the horses are on the track for the next race. These days, th...Read More

  • daugust300 · Usually i would say the dorf would win and he is the favorite to do so, but right now he has a lot of horses down south and that might give Sherman a chance. · 433 days ago ·

Kentucky Derby aspirations may have changed for the two pre-race favorites following the running of the El Camino Real Derby on Saturday. Lets start with the 1-2 favorite, Comma to the Top. Racing for the first time in two months, ‘Comma broke alertly, lugged out during the run to the first turn the...Read More

  • icyhotboo · they seem to have rated him nicely in his prior race in which JPs Gust closed on him quickly in the stretch.if they go the extra 1/16 in that race he loses at about the same distance. · 468 days ago ·

  • blooy · i can't throw him out yet, that was his first 1 1/8 and he just didn't even really fire that day. he made his move and drifted into silver medallion. i am going to wait and see his next race before tossing him out. he could have just clunked. · 468 days ago ·

Heavy favorites did not fare well in yesterday’s two Kentucky Derby preps in California. Nor did the bridge jumpers who pounded their odds way down. First it was Tapizar in Santa Anita’s Robert Lewis Stakes. Off romping wins in a maiden race at Churchill Downs and the Sham Stakes last month, he was ...Read More

After losing the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) an hour earlier with his 3-10 favorite Tapizar, trainer Steve Asmussen landed a nice consolation prize when Silver Medallion drove to an upset victory in the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) Feb. 12 at Golden Gate Fields in California.Russell B...Read More
The first case of Kentucky Derby fever sweeps the nation tomorrow with two major prep races on the West Coast, including the Grade II $250,000 Robert B. Lewis at a mile and an eighth at Santa Anita.Read More
Welcome HRN racing fans to THE blog for rating the Derby preps! It struck me that by the time all the major and minor Derby preps have been completed and we're ready to get an early jump on handicapping a probable Derby field, recall gets a little fuzzy.  That was the inspiration for this blog.&...Read More
  • arazi · Great breakdown. Although I agree the Sam Davis field is a bit suspect, I think several in there do have the potential to jump up and become a serious contender. The Camino Real will be interesting to see how Comma To The Top deals with all the pace pressure. Could set up for a closer. · 472 days ago ·

It will be a battle of north versus south this Saturday at Golden Gate Fields, and you might just say there is a big opportunity that lies ahead for the winning connections. The main event is the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby and it will be run at 1 1/8 miles. Not only is this a major stepping stone...Read More

  • KyOaksRunner · I've been hearing some doubt as to wether or not Comma to the Top can get 1 1/8 miles especially in his 2011 debut, but I think he'll do fine. He's alread done a lot more than his pedigee say he should. I like the looks of Anthony's Cross and Silver Medallion as well. · 474 days ago ·

  • Captain.Don · I agree 12 clip and KYOaksRuner, I think the distance may be a problem for CTTT, especially if pressed by Jakesam. Peter Miller told me today that the horse can rate, but i don't think that will be the case. And i still consider CTTT to be from the south. It's all going to depend on how easy the early lead is for MIllers horse. · 473 days ago ·
