I cant wait for the Derby! Im truly enjoying watching and following this sport. Stupid question from the new guy here so go easy on me. At these large races (ie Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont, BC) is it EVER possible to visit the horses? Seeing as the BC is on the west coast this year, we're there! But, what i wouldnt give to visit Shackleford, Hanson, and Creative cause in person!!

  • shadowno · The level playing field not my comment, but with regard to the surface, geography played a part given the tracks proximity to the San Gabriel mountains. Heavy rains and flooding/runoff from the mountains washed away part of the pro-ride surface in 2009-10 costing them racing days and $$$$$. Also, I don't believe it ever drained as advertised like the cushion track that cost multiple dates in 08.. It was a safer surface for horses, by reported fatilities, signifigantly so, even factoring in the lost days. But here (probably even more here given the state budget and miserable economy), as everywhere $$$$ talks and a closed track can't produce revenue. And with Awesome Gem that 1 win happened to be the Hollywood Gold Cup and he produced clutch efforts in the Pacific Classic, San Antonio and Goodwood in over synthetics so I'll give him credit for his ability to handle prety much anything thrown his way. · 532 days ago ·

  • cugel the clever · For better or worse, there is always a bias towards those horses which can win major stakes at a route. This will eliminate Caleb's Posse. AK, if he'd campaigned the whole season, probaly would have been the 3yo champ. But there's no way he should be given the Eclipse given his short campaign and the quality of his major rivals for the award. · 543 days ago ·

Who would have though a gelding competing in starter allowances would cause such an enormous uproar in America? • genie918 · While I feel Rapid Redux should be recognized at the Eclipse Awards for his accomplishment, I do not believe that he deserves HOY because of the level of competition/races he has participated in. My vote would go for Havre de Grace. This year she won 5 races--3 GI and 2 G2 that included a win in the Woodward against the boys. Her only defeats were in the G2 Delaware Handicap by a nose to the great Blind Luck and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. In the Classic, she overcame traffic problems, being bumped and was still finishing strongly in the end, so her loss was respectable. Curlin won HOY honors in 2008 with a similiar record: 5 wins/4 GI and one ungraded race in Dubai, a second in the Man o' War and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. Now, I realize that one of Curlin's wins came in the Dubai World Cup--a race that adds extra points to ones resume when reviewing championship honors, but we have to keep in mind the type of year it has been in 2011. Havre de grace's record has been solid and consistent ALL year, so I hope the voters recognize this and give her the year end honors. · 545 days ago ·

  • Snowking6 · Rapid Redux is already in the history books--and deserves special notice at the Eclipse Awards and in other venues, and should never be forgotten. I would love to see him retired as soon as it makes sense to the Kentucky Horse Park. But Horse of the Year--even in a muddled year, does not make sense--simply because he is not at the class level to have made his record against the other contenders for HOY--almost certainly. We love him, though!! Great to see his sort in these modern times. In some ways, he is MY Horse of the Year! · 545 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · annmatt, HDG could get 10f plenty fine, and I'm sorry, BL was not even close to a shoe in after her last race, and would not have been because of her two losses prior. FO who won at 10f finished behind HDG in the Classic, and I heard people just yelling about the fact that with one extra furlong he would catch her...how did that work? HDG does not seem to run her best over Churchill. She did not have an overly impressive work over the track this year and still finished well. Trying to say what could have been will drive anyone mad. BL is a great horse, but did not have it this season plain and simple. HDG should not get a minus becase her two losses to BL at 10f were by a neck and a whisker. You don't take off because she beat her at a shorter distance. If you do that then you might as well take off BL for beating her at a distance longer than 9f. The score was 1-1, even. It goes to the horse who did the most, Grace. · 556 days ago ·

  • gocashking · Amazombie, by finishing the year with big wins in the Ancient Title and BC Sprint is a no brainer for the Sprint Champion Eclipse. It won't even be close. There's no way 7F and 8F wins will be rated higher than those two wins at the "traditional" sprint distance of 6F. Caling Flashpoint "brilliant" is also a bit of a stretch, I think. · 555 days ago ·

This was a SLOW race. Even slower than the Jockey Club Gold cup on the mud!
  • Show All 6 Comments
  • DeadHeat · People, note that the time may not be just because of the horses but because of the track itself. HDG and GOD had already shown that they were capable of running 10f much quicker in the DE Cap and HGC, respectively. MMA, a very fast filly went 8.5f in 1.46. Hansen and UR, both fast colts ran that distance in 1.44. Many mile races over dirt from Thurs to Sat were 1.36 plus. Only CB had anything below that. The so called Marathoners, who were led by PP, who set quite the pace for that distance, had a 10f split of 2.05. That was not because of a slow set up, nowhere close. PP set 23, and 48 for the half. No way should they have hit that marker in 2.05 with that pace. Does anyone remember Saratoga this year? How about Whitney day? It was a dead track. Tizway went 9f in 1.52, yet we know he is not slow because the race before he ran 8f in 1.32. The track, while safe, is very demanding and probably like Saratoga needs to be resurfaced. However, the fact that the track was extremely sticky also did not help. If you were on the rail...I was, you could see just how sticky it was. · 557 days ago ·
